Are the going to offer it to the actively TTC? I would have felt a lot better having this jab before a baby was growing inside me.

grin · 17/10/2009 15:24

Henry - just had a Manuka sandwich followed by 10 mins pracning to music followed by a satsuma! Will let you know what comes of the dry throat...

ilovesprouts · 17/10/2009 15:28

hi im not pg ,but my dd is and shes not sure !!

1mum1 · 17/10/2009 16:27

I'm 33 +3 and don't think I'll be having it. Will be seeking advice from GP and midwife though before I fully decide.

Trying to have as much fruit and veg as poss in the hope it'll stave off anything affecting me. Also have become a pain when asking how people are feeling before they visit or I visit them! (oh dear)!

My hospital aren't letting children visit the wards once baby is born so that seems good as they are more likely to pick it up from school.

I wish people who are really ill would just stay indoors until the worst has passed. Overheard a very ill looking woman in the supermarket saying "Yes I've had it all weekend - I'm just glad to get out of the house" !! Thick and selfish or what??

Greatgoing · 17/10/2009 16:34

I think it is a brilliant idea to keep children out of hospital wards. One of the senior midwives at the hospital I attended said (off the record) she felt so strongly about not having small children in hosptial because of the risk of bugs and infections that newborns just weren't capable of fighting. I was amazed at the crowds of extended families, neighbours, friends that ignored the visitor limitations and crowded in our ward. Infections such as swine flu should be treated as a problem shared by everyone, and not just shouldered by the already vulnerable and paranoid pregnant population.

1mum1 · 17/10/2009 16:40

Exactly Greatgoing - completely agree. If a few simple rules were follwed as to how long to stay indoors for and also hygeine rules(like simply sneezing into a tissue and washing your hands) the whole population would be a lot more better off - but especially those who are vunerable. At the end of the day most people don't think about others!

SecretSlattern · 17/10/2009 16:58

Hmm, I'm 10 weeks and not sure what to do. DS has had swine flu, was in hospital for 3 days with it. None of the rest of us have had it as far as we know, however, DS is a bad asthmatic, DD and I are mild asthmatics. DS has a history of chest illnesses stemming from a rough time with bronchiolitis a year ago where he was hospitalised twice within 10 days, fed with a tube and rushed to ITU.

Both DCs are unwell atm, vomiting bug it seems but no other symptoms. I too feel sick, but not sure whether this is a sympton of pg (didn't have it with any of my other pgs) or whether their delightful bug has found its way to me. I work in a nursery which had an outbreak in the summer, but nothing since.

Its just such a hard decision to make.

JuliaGulia · 17/10/2009 17:35

laurawantsababy - I respect your decision to have a vaccine, whichever one they offer you.

However please will you let us know if your No. 10 petition is approved so that we can sign up? If you decide not to pursue your petition, do let us know so that we can start our own. I was just in the process of writing one and then read were going to create one so I cancelled mine to ensure we get as many people as possible signing it the same one.

To all mumsnetters, if you believe it's really a matter of life and death for us to be offered Celvapan instead of Pendemrix, please please sign the petition. Thanks

www.theness.com/neurologicablog/?p=784 this article is worth a read.

sally78 · 17/10/2009 19:53

Hi

I'm sooo confused all so! just stumbled across this news article about the vaccine...

uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20091015/tuk-mums-to-be-in-swine-flu-jab-controve-45dbed5.html

doe snt give me much confidence in the vaccine being offered!

waitingwaiting · 17/10/2009 20:07

to laurawantsababy -

Where do we find the petition??

laurawantsababy · 17/10/2009 20:33

Hi all, I am waiting for them to approve the petition at the moment. As soon as they do I will post the link on here in several areas!

I would much rather have the safer one but if they do only offer Pandemrix I will have it.

Having searched all over the WHO website, all I have seen is support for the vaccine for pregnant women???? Can anyone direct me to their advice against Pandemrix for pregnant women? Many thanks

victoriascrumptious · 17/10/2009 21:23

I will be having it. I am 20 weeks pregnant, I suffer from asthma. I'd rather take my chances with the injection than have to cope with the flu

laurawantsababy · 17/10/2009 21:39

sally78 - WHO have now backed pregnant women having Pandemix. They have done this because we will only need one jab and it will be effective immediately. If we have the other you need a booster before it is 100% effective.

Anyone know how long it takes for a petition to be approve online? I wonder if they only do it Monday to Friday?

laurawantsababy

Hi again laurawantsababy, please can you let me know why you think Pandemix isnt such a good thing for pregnant women....... cheer!

BexieID · 17/10/2009 22:29

30 weeks and really not sure. DP and Tom had colds last week and I had it a wee bit. I finish work in 2 weeks, so think if I can get through the next fortnight working in a shop, then I should be ok.

TheOldestCat · 18/10/2009 00:29

Interesting thread - thanks for starting it, laurawantsababy.

22 weeks here and wavering on the decision whether to have the jab. I'm asthmatic so normally have the seasonal one, and I have a long commute, DD at nursery/childminder's....All seems to suggest I should go for the vaccine, if offered. But how to weigh up the risks?

Bah.

benjysmum · 18/10/2009 01:12

37/40, want it but can't have it because my GP's surgery won't actually receive stocks until after I have had the baby. Will be asking my MW for further advice.

My friend is a health specialist who has recently attended not one, but three different conferences on swine flu in her professional capacity. I am currently 25 weeks pregnant with my first child.

Her view was that I should definitely have the vaccine as the dangers from swine flu to pregnant women far outweigh those of the vaccine. So yes, there is a very, very small risk from the vaccine, but as she explained, the risk of a miscarriage from having the swine flu is much higher than any potential side effects from the jab.

Media reports have mainly focused on deaths to pregnant women as a result of swine flu. I haven't seen many reports regarding the rate of miscarriage, but I would imagine that's a far harder number to quantify. Deaths are also far more likly to make a news headline.

I should also add that my friend said all the conferences agree that good hygiene is the most important defence when it comes to protecting your unborn child. And that ALL the risks - of the jab and the flu - are relatively low. Most of us will be fine.

Personally, I will be having the vaccine.

mumandlovingit · 18/10/2009 10:25

does anyone know the actual numbers of pregnant women who have died from sf? im sure i read in the paper that around 100 people have died but only 6 of them were pregnant. to me thats not a great amount.

i could be wrong though so please someone give me the figures if you have them.

ive had anti d in both previous pregnancies and am now going to see whats in it.i will still be having it this pregnancy though as ive had it before with no side effects except a sore leg where they injected it.

im really not happy with having any injecions/mediation during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary so at the moment im going to say no to the jab

mumandlovingit · 18/10/2009 10:34

just looked up anti d and it doesnt say anything about mercury being in the injection.

ive had it 4 times with no adverse affects
