When will my bump start to show? Impatient!

Just wondering when I'm likely to see my bump begin to appear? I'm 8+5weeks with my first and am still a size 8-10. I look rather bloated but is that actually the start of baby bump!?

It varies from person to person, I am 21 weeks with my 3rd and only just starting to show. There is a lady at school who is 30 weeks who is not showing but also a lady who is 8 weeks who looks more pregnant than the 30 week lady!

barbie1 · 10/10/2009 17:11

i had days when i looked more bloated than others...im week 22 now and can finally say i have a baby bump!

Congrats by the way

MamaLazarou · 10/10/2009 17:30

Mine didn't start to show until around 15 weeks. Then I just looked a bit fat for a while. It wasn't until week 20 or so that I actually started to look properly pregnant. I'm now 25 wks and so rotund that people assume I'm about to drop! It's hard to imagine that I'll get much bigger, but I suppose it's inevitable.

Having an enormous belly is my favourite thing about being pregnant. I love it. Maybe I am a bit weird!

TheMysticMasseuse · 10/10/2009 17:48

you will so regret these words, OP, once you start looking absolutely gynormous and feel like a whaddly whale

MidgeMungoAndMary · 10/10/2009 18:18

Have a look here: www.pregnancyguideonline.com/, nothing much to see externally before about week 13/14 and even then, it won't be much...I tended to have a small bump by about 21 weeks but from then onwards, bump growth becomes visible and fast!

Take any stories about having a baby bump at 7 weeks (or similar) with a pinch of salt, the uterus hasn't even risen out of the pelvis at this stage....people tend to confuse fat big bellies with bumps!

keepcalmcarryon · 10/10/2009 19:19

So true TheMysticMasseuse...I am now nearly 32 weeks and any semblance of elegance and grace associated with my day-to-day movements (e.g. sitting down, getting up, walking, anything) is but a distant memory...

PoppyIsApain · 10/10/2009 19:22

I was nearly 9 months when people started realising i was pg

morethemerrier · 10/10/2009 20:14

I disagree! I am 9 weeks today and over the last week have aquired a definate bump! My tummy was flat and I am a size 8! I have had bloating towards the end of the day but I can't even suck this in first thing in the morning ! This is my 3 pregnancy so maybe it's more to do with that, there is a link somewhere on here which has photos of lots of different size bumps to compare , very interesting! Don't forget, everyone is different , and I am sure you will be sporting a bump very soon!!! Congrats to all x

pigleychez · 10/10/2009 20:22

Midge- I disagree too.
I was noticably pregnant at 14 weeks with DD1 and now with Dc2 I was in maternity clothes at 6 weeks and and now at 9 weeks most people have guessed.
Its a definate round bump not just fat.
If I had a pound for everytime ive heard someone say "twins??" id be rich in these past few weeks.

I think it really depends on each person as to how quickly you show. And yes.... when your waddling, cant get comfy and very very round you will be wanting it to go... then want it back again afterwards and miss the bump... Odd hey!

MidgeMungoAndMary · 10/10/2009 20:37

Yes everyone is different but I do find it odd when a foetus which has a CRL of less than 3cm (at about 10wks) and even less at 6/7/8wks can in any way cause a bump!

Chynah · 10/10/2009 21:20

I'm with you on this one midge! Can't understand how something that small can be a bump - bloating however I can understand. I was in third tri before I was in maternity clothes with #1 (I'm size 10) and am nearly 14 weeks now and still in my normal jeans and long may that last! Fat belly (baby or otherwize) is not something I look forward to having so for as short a time as possibe is good for me.

MidgeMungoAndMary · 10/10/2009 21:28

Bloating is a separate matter, given that it is entirely related to the stomach/digestive system and not to a first trimester-sized foetus!

So, to the OP, regardless of your current size/weight, if you experience bloating during your first trimester, then you could well imagine that you do, indeed, have a baby bump. Key word is 'imagine'

ohnelly · 11/10/2009 09:35

I think it usually takes longer when its the first baby, I was about 6 months and very impatient waiting for mine. Im pregnant with the 2nd now, and waiting for it again at 16weeks there is not much there at all - I can feel it if I press!

Weegle · 11/10/2009 10:17

I also disagree Midge - I had a positive bump this pregnancy at 10 weeks - not the same as the bloating. In fact it is one of the things that made me think, before my scan, that I was carrying twins... I am. Now flipping enormous at only 25 weeks and slightly concerned about just HOW big this bump is going to get!

wicked · 11/10/2009 10:27

You start to show when you start wearing maternity clothes.

With my first, I started to show around 22 weeks. I hadn't told colleagues that I was pg and they were very surprised that I was so far along.

MidgeMungoAndMary · 11/10/2009 10:51

weegle my posts all concerned singletons, so of course, with multiples, an external bump will happen slightly earlier!! Congrats on your twins!

BarakObamasTransitVan · 11/10/2009 13:50

OK so I'm only 5 weeks and clearly I am not showing. However, my uterus is definately a little bigger than usual - my lower abdomen doesn't feel the same as normal. Of course I can't feel the fundus but I think the rest of my insides are rearranging themselves ever so slightly. It is not bloating - if anything I look slimmer than normal because I've skipped the PMT bloat I normally get.
What I'm trying to say is that you can start to look different (and those close to you might say you look PG) even with a pip-sized embryo on board. Perhaps even at this stage your uterus is a bit bigger than normal and therefore everything else has to give way a bit.
This is #2 btw and #1 was just the same.

Tigresswoods · 11/10/2009 14:01

Hello my impatient friend first1 I am on my first too and was impatient just like you.

I am now 19+4 and have just "Popped out". I have to say that in the preceeding weeks I thought it was coming and then it would disappear again. Weird. There is no denying it now though.

Size wise I was a slender tall 12 (sometimes 10) so not sure if that helps.

Still not in maternity gear but do need slightly looser trousers for work although not full blown elasticated jobbies yet.

morethemerrier · 11/10/2009 17:50

Don't forget, it's not just the 3cm foetus that's in there! There's your orange sized uterus, and fluid! And as I said before we are all different, and whilst some suffer morning sickness others don't! Some of us have super sore boobs, some don't! Dare I say some of us may have for whatever reason, be it a first or subsequent pregnancy a larger uterus which responds quicker to the growth and changes our bodies go through in early pregnancy. And if we accept that everyone is not built the same I think it is reasonable to also accept that it is entirely the case that some of us show earlier than others, without imagining it! As far as I know I am only having one, but I can also feel the top of my uterus above my pelvis when I lie down, again all the books state that it is usually around twelve weeks?!? (think that's the 'average')If when I have my scan and there are two, I will let you know midge and you can revel in your belief that singleton bellies showing early are Either imagining it or just fat! I must have a good imagination! Or iam having twins! Lol x

first1 · 12/10/2009 10:17

Thanks everyone! Well today I'm 9weeks and utterly convinced I look like a whale! Jeans are really snug (sitting here with the top button undone) and I can't suck it in properly! Sister-in-law says I'm probably showing early because I'm pretty small. I definitely want my bump to show but I hate this "fat stage"!

OP posts:
amyboo · 12/10/2009 10:32

I'm 15+3 with my first and have a definite bump - started about week 12 when I could no longer do up the button on my trousers, and I'm now about to go and buy some maternity trousers as mine are getting very uncomfy...

Jayfer · 12/10/2009 13:05

I'm 12+3 with my first and I haven't got a bump, I've just got fat all over. My feet are a size bigger already! I'm looking forward to getting a bump and to stop looking fat. I look like I've been standing too close to the dessert trolley!!

bubblesincambridge · 12/10/2009 13:25

Revel in being bump-less for the time being. You'll be wishing it didn't show when it does!

fiziwizzle · 12/10/2009 14:16

I looked fatter from about 12 weeks and thought it was the beginning of a bump. Oh, no. When I was 18 weeks a proper bump just appeared over the course of one day. It was the strangest thing. I left for work in the morning looking slightly tubby and came home looking definitely pregnant. I can only think it must have been my uterus moving up and out of my pelvis. Now at 23 weeks people keep asking me if I'm SURE I'm due in February as I'm so big. Which gets a little tiresome

Tigresswoods · 12/10/2009 14:22

Talk about tiresome...

"Do you know the gender yet?"

"Would you like to know"

"Will you find out at the next scan"

I know what will happen when we do go for the next scan, they will be unsure and we will spend the next 4 and a bit months going, "well it could be a boy/girl, but these scans are not 100% you know"

I am REALLY loving being preggers, honest just wish there was lots of different conversations I could have rather than the one.
