Did the "female sperm are slower but last longer, male sperm are faster but die off quickly" theory work for you?

Because I keep hearing that the best way to have a girl is to have sex a day or two before you ovulate so by the time the egg is available all the male sperm have died. And the best way to have a boy is to have sex on the day you ovulate.

So if you were charting or otherwise knew when you ovulated, and you had sex that day, have any of you had girl babies?

Worked for me....DS conceived close to ovulation, DD a couple of days before!...They say position makes a difference as well as orgasm!

PracticalCat · 21/09/2009 10:49

Maybe you'll get lucky Joeymac. But I really do think that it's a matter of luck. I followed most of the 'rules', including having lots of sex between my period and a few days before ov, supposedly to decrease the amount of boy sperm (Shettles). I researched so carefully, followed my cycle for months before trying (got pregnant on first month). I have now embraced the idea of a tribe of boys who will gather round their mummy

daisy71 · 21/09/2009 12:48

Well I believed in this theory, as we had sex 3 days before ovulation (although we did have sex the day before too) and DD1 was conceived. I was sure that she had been lurking there for the 3 days. However, I am due in 3 weeks with DD2 and we only had sex once that whole month (pathetic I know as we were trying!-that's what having kids does for your sex life) and that was the day before I ovulated. So I now think it's a load of crap.

carmenelectra · 21/09/2009 13:06

I believe the theory and religiously worked out my cycle for a yr(wanted a girl after 2 boys) and got pregnant fairly quickly after having sex on day ten or eleven(or so i thought). Was pleased to think that it must be a girl as i know i got pregant around day 14 with the boys.

Then a fter casually flicking through my diary i realised that we had actually 'dne it' on day 10(Id written dates down wrong).I could have cried. Its another boy!! Im just mad that i messed up on my last chance

Joeymac · 21/09/2009 19:59

Carmenelectra - I'm confused. You ovulate on day 14 hence your boys and then you did it on day 10 according to your diary - why was that wrong? It was obvioulsy a boy but day 10 would have suggested you had a chance of a girl. Was you diary wrong for the boys? Did you conceive them on day 10 and therefore ovulate around that time and not day 14?

MumNWLondon · 21/09/2009 22:34

Worked for me for DS. We already had DD (not sure of dates for her) - had sex on morning of ovulation, and sure enough had a boy.

But my SIL borrowed the book and conceived her 2nd DS she says 4/5 days before ovulation.

carmenelectra · 22/09/2009 04:49

Sorry joey what i meant was we had actually done it on day 13 by mistake!! Hence another boy!

iwantapinkprincess · 22/09/2009 07:10

No and am now expecting ds4 !! He was concieved 3/4 days before ovulation.

IdrisTheDragon · 22/09/2009 07:13

DD was conceived on day 8 of a 28 day cycle so presume I ovulated early that month/and or the sperm stayed around for a while.

DS was conceived on day 14 of 28 day cycle I think.

SycamoretreeIsVile · 22/09/2009 07:15

Yes, it "worked" for us but when we tried for a boy after DD.

But, who knows if it was actually that, that did it.

I'll tell you in a few weeks if my sister has a little girl to go with her DS

SycamoretreeIsVile · 22/09/2009 07:20

We probably got a DS because I told DH I would only try his feckin' method to try for a son for one month (because I was probably secretly a bit scared of having a boy because I only knew what to do with a girl ).

I think it was nature poking me in the eye that we got pg that first month...at least I think that's what was poking me.

I never get my way

1mum1 · 22/09/2009 14:26

We believe that this is what happened for us - not that we were trying to conceive a certain sex. We are expecting a girl.

AnotherBloodySugaBabe · 22/09/2009 14:28

Had sex on - or very close to - ovulation both times. One boy, one girl.

Pollyanna · 22/09/2009 14:35

yes, worked for me the last 2 times -dd3 conceived on day 7, ds2 conceived on day 18 (eek, thought i was safe both times!).

frumpygrumpy · 22/09/2009 14:35

I think its how we got b/g DTs . Sex few days before and it turned into DT2 (boy), sex few days after and it turned into DT1 (girl) I'm sure they were conceived on different days.

EyeoftheStorm · 22/09/2009 14:44

DS1 and DS2 day before or day of ovulation.
DD1 conceived so far before ovulation it didn't seem possible.
Chinese Gender Predicter (sp?) - mother's age plus month conceived or something complicated like that - worked for my 3 as well.

Wilkiepedia · 22/09/2009 14:46

Load of absolute bollocks. Read the 'How to choose the sex of your child naturally'. Followed it TO THE LETTER. Had sex 5 daysbefore ovulation (confirmed with ov goo, ov stick and dating scan) - should have been a girl but got a bouncing boy!

Luck of the draw, I am just glad I have two healthy boys and wish I had just enjoyed TTC instead of trying to count days and all that bollocks

bevlin · 22/09/2009 15:13

Oh, I feel like you lot have just told me the sex already!
I knew last time exactly the day ovulation started and fell PG with DS. I did same this time (had never heard this theory until now) and fell PG straight away again.
Now reading this im convinced it must be another boy.
Not that I would be disappointed to have another boy, but disappointed not to have a surprise!

bevlin · 23/09/2009 09:26

Wait, came back on this morning and realised.....not one person had a girl on ovulation day!!!
This theory MUST be right.
Did anyone have a girl on the actual day of ovulation then?
I spent last night trying to think of another boy name and being disappointed that I KNEW already!!

SycamoretreeIsVile · 23/09/2009 11:23

Bevlin - I conceived DD on either day before, day of, or day after ovulation....

bevlin · 23/09/2009 15:09

Oh, do you just 'know' when your ovulating or did you use ovulation kits?

Horton · 23/09/2009 15:37

I conceived DD on what I think was my day of ovulation, according to sticks that I pissed on and also cervical mucus etc.

katnkittens · 23/09/2009 16:16

I have a DS and 2 DDS. The first 2 I can't remember at all. My DD2 was conceived on CD14 of a 28 day cycle. I didn't use sticks or anything so couldn't confirm that was def OV day but chances are it probably was.

Oh and just remembered a friend telling me she was using sticks and only did it once on OV day, she had a DS.

Who knows, I am 6 weeks preg with DC4 and would quite like a DS, we did it lots around OV time and on the day of OV.. I just wanted to get pregnant! Time will tell but I'm not THAT bothered. You do get a little fed up of barbie princesses and Hanna Montana though....

SycamoretreeIsVile · 23/09/2009 16:54

I peed on sticks Bevlin, for a month before I started trying and for the month I got PG - well, you did ask loL!

sheeplikessleep · 23/09/2009 20:02

Surely, if having sex on day of ovulation = boy and before = girl, there'd be way more girls than boys though (IYSWIM)?
