I spent most of my time in black ballet-style shoes, as they were suitable for both smart and casual situations, but put in the thickest, most comfortable pair of insoles I could find. It worked really well. And if your feet show any signs of swelling up, just go straight out and buy a pair of shoes in a larger size rather than trying to faff about with flip-flops as I did at the end of my pregnancy. You will be so much more comfortable.

londonlottie that cardigan does look nice - if you don't already have any offers for boden there is a 10% off mumsnet one if you look at this page

Mothercare surprised me this time too, although I was buying from the spring/summer stuff but it was definitely nicer than when I was last pg 5 years ago.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 17/09/2009 12:36

yes pumps are great! I just hate clothes which you know will only last a few months. I keep thinking about those 2 months after when your breast feeding but still want to cover up a bit!

londonlottie long Uggs sound great! Are you having twins?? Your going to have a lovely big bump! I am !

Oh good lord hadn't thought as far ahead as not being able to do up trainers.

In that case does anyone have shoe recommendations. I find that as soon as I walk any distance at all in anything other than my running shoes I get pains in my pelvis and bump. I assume its the jolting.

Can anyone recommend shoes with good cushioning and support that could be slipped on? Ideally not too ugly...

trixymalixy · 17/09/2009 13:46

anita underwired bras and £10 jersey trousers from peacocks.

overthemoon2009 · 17/09/2009 13:53

Have you had a look in Clarks? Some of their shoes are actually quite stylish now. Last time I was in there they had a number of Camper-esque type flat shoes, which might do the trick. A lot of their shoes have cushioning under the insole - even the ones with heels.

I haven't got any myself, but lots of people swear by Ugg boots/similar. I feel tempted to get some myself this year. Friends have recommended Rocketdog ones as a cheaper alternative to Uggs.

I too hadn't realised that a point will come when I wouldn't be able to fasten my shoes (I am also a firsttimer).

alana39 · 17/09/2009 14:09

Second overthemoon's idea of Camper - style Clarks, my only problem is I'm an 8 so swollen feet (well, just right foot wierdly) now not fitting into even their comfortable ones!

If you can find really soft pumps, they are comfortable as they tend to be low enough down not to make the swelling worse (although it can look odd if the foot on top is balooning up) but then they tend to be the kind of leather that gets permanently marked by wet weather. La Redoute have cheap range that are often quite soft in a range of colours.

Tryingtobemarypoppins have you got some bump bands? They are useful when breastfeeding as if you have to hitch your top up for access (and I've never got on with those purpose made BF tops) they cover up the side that would otherwise be on show. Would be too hot in summer, but that won't be a problem until 2 weeks next June anyway.

alana39 I am wearing bump bands everyday! They are fab! They make jeans so much more comfortable and tops seem better with them. Great buy!

Does anyone else find the continual recommendations to buy maternity jeans odd? Everytime I have a look at advice on what to wear during pregnancy a key recommendation is buy some mat jeans.

Now I am 20 weeks and have held off the maternity denim so far as cant find a pair that look remotely nice (havent even had to bother trying them on they are so ug)plus was worried if bought a pair early on then I would end up having to buy another pair as I got bigger.

However, at this half way point I dont think I will be buying any denim for pregnancy. With water retention and hormones I dont feel like wearing denim around my hips and thighs at all. I am wearing bottoms that are soft and stretchy or loose. (And no I dont look slouchy or scruffy unless I want to) I also think that type of clothing has a greater chance of growing with me than a pair of mat jeans as I seem to spread around the hips and bottom too. Finally I notice that whenever I wear bottoms made out of a stiffer fabric I end up having them inch themselves downward as I walk/sit down. This is less of problem with something thinner and stretchier.

Yes denim is great usually, but good denim is usually pricey so I would want to wear it over a longer period of time than maternity/early baby stages. Plus sometimes not appropriate for work. So why all these hots for maternity jeans?

Bexybear · 18/09/2009 21:38

for my first pregnancy my SIL gave me a bag of mat clothes, It included a pair of trousers I took one look at and thought - 'you are never getting me in those'.... By about 28 weeks you couldnt get me out of them. They were wide leg navy linen and had one of those hoooge over the bump stretchy panels that look daft when youve not been pregnant before but totally work. Lived in those plus birkies and big t shirts. Miles more comfy than those nasty maternity jeans that dig in your belly...

tryingtobemarypoppins · 18/09/2009 22:42

Swing Coats £25 at Tesco!

ravenAK · 21/09/2009 22:30

Isabella Oliver long black skirt.

I was at £60 for a stretchy tube, but honestly, I lived in it & could wear just about any non maternity top with it.

It's now gracing its 4th bump, having been passed on to colleagues.
