...what are you/did you do about a winter coat?

It might seem a really minor problem, considering all the other stuff that needs sorting/worrying about, but I think I'm fixating on it to blot out all the other shite

I'm due in early Jan and got an 8 YO DD who was born at start of Dec, but I can't remember for the life of me what I did when I was preg with her! I have to walk an hour a day to take DD to/from school and can't afford to get a huge tent of a coat just for a few months.

Any help would be appreciated

Poncho and big cardis!

CrackWhoretoPaulDacre · 14/09/2009 22:32

Huge cardigan and scarves, moving to shawls when I wanted proper bump cover

lavenderkate · 14/09/2009 22:33

I wore a wool coat from East. Cost about £70.It came to my knees and was a bit stretchy. Still wear it now 3 yrs on.

serenity · 14/09/2009 22:36

I just wore lots of layers, and my coat undone with scarves. Never do my coat up anyway.

NotanOtter · 14/09/2009 22:37

big huge long cardy
light and warm

crankytwanky · 14/09/2009 22:40

Big long cardi here too. Baby will keep you warm.

sausagerolemodel · 14/09/2009 22:40

How about a mamaponcho? Then you can use it before and after...

PlasticWoman · 14/09/2009 23:02

maygirl if you come back to this, could you possibly look at the label of that Tesco coat you've bought and tell me what it's made out of? I was thinking a swing coat to accommodate my bump, and that looks really nice.
Thanks, hopefully.

generalunrest · 15/09/2009 10:31

sausagerolemodel I can't tell whether you're joking or not!! 115 quid you'd expect it to have gold thread in it for that price lol

Do you know anyone bigger than you who would be willing to lend you a coat? I fortunately held onto a freebie ski jacket given to an old boyfriend...totally swamps me normally, but plan to use it as my winter coat as will accomodate bump.

The plus to ski jackets is that fleece can be removed making it a nice windproof/ waterproof jacket without it being too hot.

GoldenSnitch · 15/09/2009 10:47

I pinched Dh's fleece. Am currently 6 months pregnant and will be doing the same this winter too

Walnut8 · 15/09/2009 11:43

I got a swing coat from french connection - not maternity but very roomy (buttons stop just under bust) and I think stylish enough to wear post pregnancy. I tried on quite a few maternity ones and didn't really find anything I liked (although the Debenhams navy military one that was mentioned was pretty good).

I like the sound of a big stretchy knit hoodie though.

sockmonkey · 15/09/2009 12:07

I was going to start a thread on this. I'm due in january.
I did quite like the new look maternity coat. I've looked everywhere, even eBay and maternity coats seem so expensive to say they are only for a few months. The New Look ones are quite reasonable.

MrsBadger · 15/09/2009 12:16

yy non-maternity swing coats

Peacocks have nice black wool ones atm - £25? £35? can't remember

aha

this was the one I tried
but this is good too, also comes in brown

MrsBadger · 15/09/2009 12:23

this is good too

I felt frumpy and bad in big hoodies as I normally wear quite fitted tailored wool coats, even with jeans

I reckon you'd get a bump under this one on this one too

FlightofFancy · 15/09/2009 13:09

Thanks for asking, as I'm worrying about the same thing! Glad lots of people were able to manage with normal winter coat and scarves as this is what I plan to do - need to look smart for work, so can't do DH's big fleece look or hoodies! As you say, it's so rarely cold enough to need to do up coat buttons anyway.

laurawantsababy · 15/09/2009 14:06

Good thread!! I was thinking the same myself. With dd I was early pg so just wore my usual coat but open with a scarf. This time I am due at the end of Jan.

I was just going to buy a mans coat from Matalan or Primark to see me through but some of the suggestions on here are really nice I think I will get a nice one!!

AngelDog · 15/09/2009 20:42

Jojo Maman Bebe have a cunning looking coat with a removable front panel so you can wear it post-pregnancy too (plus it has a hood - good for outings with pushchair, I'm told). I've not seen one in real life, mind so I don't know what they look like on - I got my nice maternity coat from someone on Freecycle. That's always worth a try.

GibberingGinger · 15/09/2009 21:05

I was pregnant last winter and when looking for a coat I wanted one with buttons/poppers over a zip so if I could no longer get the whole thing done up at least I could tie some of the top buttons. I ended up getting one in New Look in size 18 (I was a 12), for baout 40quid with big chunky clip button things, I loved it. Even once baby was born in Jan I wore it the rest of the winter as I was still far too large to get into my previous winter coats. In fact I might well be wearing it this winter again as that baby weight isn't shifting!

daisyj · 15/09/2009 21:09

A lovely swing coat from Reiss which I bought the year before (hoping to be pg, but it took another year in the end ) and am intending to wear this year (not pregnant)

Megglevache · 15/09/2009 21:09

I wore my usual one with really long winter scarf in the gap. I bought lots in different colours. I couldn't stomach spending so much money on something I'd wear for a few weeks!

Yikess · 16/09/2009 21:19

Im due on christmas day and bought a really nice coat from Tescos a size too big - £35 which I thought was reasonable as I would still use it for a couple of months after the birth. The style meant the bottom half was a little like a swing coat so it would easily expand with the babba. Hope this helps

Chynah · 16/09/2009 21:57

Made do with the coats I had and filled the open front with a good scarf!

brettgirl2 · 16/09/2009 22:52

For some reason, I'd bought a coat that was too big for me in a hurry one lunch time the year before.

It would button up till I was 8 months!!! (Baby born in april)

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 16/09/2009 22:54

I had a hideous Blooming Marvellous fleece. It was bright red with a hood and I looked like Little Red Riding Hood who had eaten the wolf.
