Hi

Just had results of my GTT come back high and have an appointment to see two doctors next week. I think one might be a consultant and the other a dietician. Has anyone had any experience of GD in pregnancy? If so what's likely to happen at my appointment?

I'm a bit concerned that I'll be 31 weeks when I have my appointment which seems a bit late.

Hi there - this thread is a little old. [[https://www.mumsnet.com/pregnancy/gestational-diabetes

Hi All

BB - My appointment was fine thank you. Baby apparently weighs 5lbs 4oz now (at 33 weeks 4 days) so that's not too bad and the consultant said everything seemed ok so that is good. Apparently baby is size wise exactly where they should be just still a bit heavier that expect. Its put on about 1lb in the last fortnight so I think that's about average and its just below the 90th centile line now rather than just above so that's good.

They're referring me to a joint diabetes/obstetric clinic at the hospital so hopefully that will be good to get everything looked at in the one place!

I'm sorry to hear you are feeling so yucky. You're right, it is a heck of a time to get a bug if it is one, but could be the start of things from what I've heard. Just make sure you take care of yourself - or better still get DH to take care of you!! Its good your levels are staying ok though. Hope you feel better soon, x.

Hope everyone else is doing ok.

L, x.

BlackLetterDay · 05/10/2009 15:23

Hi all, quite shocked at the treatment you have had MrsR, think I have been quite lucky in that most people have been really good. Well apart from the annoying obs reg who insists on speaking to you like a 2yo, I've also had the you are at increased risk of type 2 diabetes blah lose weight blah at every single bloody appointmment, yes I geddit fgs.

I wouldn't panic too much about the weight either, my baby was measuring 6lb 12oz at 32+6, also Ds measured huge at this point but was only (ha!) 9lb 10oz,so not too scary.

Ooh sounds promising Brighton bleach, labour would be nicer than a bug (although not too sure how far along you are).

I have my c-section date although would love to go a bit earlier (selfish). Congrats Lemontop hope you get to bring Issac home soon.

Can't wait to be rid of the insulin, does it make anyone else feel funny? I feel like my head is in the clouds everytime it's increased, never know wether it's hormones bs levels or insulin, just want to feel normal again.

MrsR2004 · 05/10/2009 17:57

OMG BB I could have written that exact post, was going to ask today if insulin gives anyone else an upset tummy?

The last few days I have also had diarrhoea, period pains/camping, lower backache/stiffness and must admit it did make we wonder about very early labour signs although I doubt it, sometimes they can show up weeks before the birth i've read???

Am also really struggling with my hips during the night, they end up aching and painful after about 1/2-hour and I have to keep swapping sides

Am feeling ok today, keep thinking of all the questions I want to ask Wednesday. Do you ladies find that your consultant talks to you about plans, inducing v's c-section, when to etc????

Blackletterday - yes for me its the obs consultant who talks to me like I am 2 (he really doesnt seem to enjoy his job) and the diabetic consultant mentioned doin something about my weight, im not an idiot and of course realise the link to type 2 but it was something he felt he need to say I guess!!

Thanks for reassuring me about baby weights, although 9lb 10ozs sounds scary to me do you mind me asking the reason for a c-section over induction, is it because of the size of baby? Also, how many weeks will you be?

xx

MrsR2004 · 05/10/2009 18:10

Hi again,

I also wanted to ask if anyone knew what the non stress test was???

Thanks xx

brightonbleach · 05/10/2009 19:45

evening all!

Laura bubba's size sounds fab, you're on course don't worry

thanks all, I feel really pained & awful but m/w seems to think its probably a bug OR body preparing for labour, but not actual start of anything! I'm 36+2 today I think, so its probably just as well - but they have asked me to call them again tomorrow morning if still getting pains... Now I have terrible period-like pain, backache like I've never had & going hot & cold but no actual contractions apart from a mild tightening every 20 mins which m/w said will be 'practice' ones! and no show or anything else, so probably a false alarm.

insulin shouldn't give you any sickness MrsR by the way -as your body makes it naturally (the pancreas)- so you could probably double check yourself as well! How far along are you again?

MrsR2004 · 05/10/2009 21:54

umm could be a bug BB or could be pre-labour signs?? Your not far off full term so sure your little one would be fine if he/she came soon. I had my son at 36+4

See how you feel tomorrow and be sure to call the mw again, take it easy x

I will be 34 weeks on Saturday so I am thinking either bug or pre-labour, it didn't feel like a bug though?? Pre-labour can happen a while before actual early labour signs so thinking maybe body is just getting ready, hard to know with me being induced the first time.

I have never felt braxton hicks contractions and didn't last time either and to be honest my actual contractions were mostly in my groin/low abdomen and back - not high in the bump like you hear, the monitor was not even picking them up as the pads were put too high! So my period pains could be BH I guess??? My bump does have times when it goes hard though.

Good news is both our babies are moving nicely

I also mean't to say to Laura that baby weight seems spot on and levels seem quite controlled which is fab!

Night all xxx

BlackLetterDay · 05/10/2009 22:31

I'm having an elcs because of 2 previous sections MrsR nowt to do with weight etc. I was considering a VBAC last time (after emcs first time) but due to size of ds and his ginormo head chickened out. I will be 38+2 (35+2 today). Stupid obs reg got my hopes up saying that they would do the section at 37 weeks, due to huge baby polyhydramnios and whatnot but then measured my bump and I was only measuring 36 weeks (1 week over) which is a bit for me, plus consultant overruled and said 38 weeks. My poor bump with ds had to be seen to be believed, think I was measuring about 46 weeks+ when they gave up with the tape measure.

Fairly sure I had undiagnosed GD with him, I did have the GTT but was negative. I'm hoping (probably in vain) that this baby will actually be smaller than he was.

Sorry for waffling.

LauraKB · 06/10/2009 09:59

Morning all

Just when you thought a breakfast was safe it goes and gives you a reading of 9.9 and 1 and a half hours later !! I know I should have waited till 2 hours but have a work meeting and not sure the finger pricking and blood squeezing would go down too well!!

I'm a bit cheesed off about that though! Oh well mebe just one of those things or mebe will have to thing it out again .

BB Hope you're feeling better today.

Everyone Hope you're having good days.

L, x.

brightonbleach · 06/10/2009 11:47

morning all

feeling a bit better this morning thankfully! Don't know if its been a bug or the body 'clearing out' which is a pre-labour thingy, I don't know, but just glad its subsiding a bit for now! still feel queasy & achy and didn't sleep too well, but thats all probably par for the course at the moment. I'm not going to call the m/w this morning as she said to only call if pains got worse or if I had extra/new pains... next appointment is Monday, and my NCT classes are thurs-mon, so will get checked out soon

MrsR yeah, they said the period-like pains were most likely BH and that "I would know if it was real contractions as they take your breathe away & are high in the bump" - but I've also heard lots of people who didn't get those kind of contractions when they were in full 'real' labour anyway, my mum had back pains and general period-like pains only for example...
?? so am confused but thats also par for the course at the mo!!

hey Black yeah, I was disappointed when they said they were going to induce me at 37-38 weeks previously and now its 39 weeks! gah. blimey, you must have been uncomfortable last time! are you slightly better this time round?

Laura just out of interest, what gave you a high read for breakfast today?

have a nice day y'all, I plan on doing bugger all...

MrsR2004 · 06/10/2009 13:38

Thanks for sharing Blackletterday, I don't blame you opting for a c-section this time, after 2 previous and a very large baby it's definately the sensible choice for you both, i'm really scared about a c-section - feel like a wimp saying that as i'm not so scared of labour pain but I don't like the idea of the needle in my back, and the operation and of course the recovery - how have you found them so far?

I guess if it was planned I would have time to adjust and ask questions but really really don't want an emergency cs, don't want to be put to sleep or for my hubby to miss it

Also, just wondered if your son actually looked big as i've seen babies 8-9.5 lbs ish and they still look pretty tiny to me, it's just getting them out thats the problem lol! The docs make me feel like my baby will be a monster that's not in proportion that's all!

Laura - sorry to hear about the breakfast reading, this is my most frustrating time of day! What was it? I find it interesting that you do 2 hour checks but must be different in different areas?

BB - glad to hear you are feeling a bit better, me too, just seemed to last 3-4 days. I'm with you on the no sleep thing though and my hips are still painful, I 'packaged' myself into bed last night with extra duvet underneath me for more padding on my hips, pillow under bump and pillow between knees, what a picture! It was a nightmare to turn over or get up for a wee lol!

Real contractions would take your breath away but not at first (with most people), in early labour they just felt like period pains and then gradually grew in pain and intensity. My actual labour was definately a back labour and was pretty horrendous in terms of pain (I have a bad back anyway) in back and lower bump but for me practically nothing in upper bump so it's hard to tell, not everyone is textbook so you cn only go with gut feeling.

My readings are improving, had 2 reasonable days on 30 insulin twice a day but then yesterday everything was slightly higher, I know you and docs have mentioned that as the pregnancy progresses it gets harder so upped the insulin to 35 today to see what happens, so far not bad and best breakfast reading ever of 8.7 xxx

LauraKB · 06/10/2009 13:54

Hi All

I had 2 pieces of Hovis Granary toast with some butter and Scott's no added sugar jam (which it says is suitable for a diabetic diet) and it gave me a reading of 9.9 (then I did a retest of 9.4 so still high) at 1.5 hours.

I've had this quite a few times before and usually get readings in the 7's or 8s at a push. Oh well, hopefully its just one of those things.

I had a big lunch of Scotch Broth Soup followed by Gammon Steak, chips and salad (although only ate a few of the chips) as was out with work so goodness knows what reading will be after that. I'm planning to treat this as my main meal of the day and just have something light tonight. It was a long walk to and from the place though so hopefully that might have helped, I'm knackered now though!!

I'm not sure why they've got me on 2 hour readings but that's what the consultant said to do. You're right MrsR it must just differ between consultants I guess.

Glad you're all feeling better.

L, x.

LauraKB · 06/10/2009 15:00

Curiouser and curiouser. I've just done my 2 hour levels after that massive lunch and only 6.9!

I don't think I'll ever really understand this.

Oh well

L, x.

brightonbleach · 06/10/2009 16:35

hey Laura - interesting, it will be the walk that you did there and back, as it would use up the 'energy' from the food so you would have been quite low when you got to the resterant then you will have walked off any excess from the food on the way back before testing. They've told me that if I'm doing anything active I have to eat more beforehand. I'm surprised about your timings for reading as well, they told me it was always 1hour testing if you pregnant and 2hours if you're not... different areas probably have completely different policies maybe?!

I can't seem to eat any more, am 36+3 & anything I eat makes the bump go horridly tight right across, my skins goes hot & I can't breathe making me feel panicky! I had soup and toast today then a really uncomfortable hour, think I will have to forgo carbs or decent-sized meals for the rest of this pregnancy as I can't stand the panic-attack feeling!! gawd, the things you don't know/expect about pregnancy, eh...

baby is making me laugh today, squirming around - and if I click my fingers low down on the bump he (his hands I think!) jumps straight away in reaction haha poor little thing.

LauraKB · 07/10/2009 09:08

Hi All

BB I can understand why you would not want to eat, that sounds horrible! Not too long to go now though, 3 weeks is it?. Glad you are over your bug though.

I had to pop to the hospital this morning on the way to work to get some bloods taken for LFTs. They took them at the clinic on Monday but by the time they got them to the lab (24 hours later I think!) they were too old.

It took them 2 goes to get them this morning so am a little pin cushion but if that's the worst to complain off that can't be too bad.

I've tried Weetabix for breakfast again this morning so we'll see how that goes.

Have a good day all and hope you are well.

L, x.

brightonbleach · 07/10/2009 18:34

hey Laura yesh, just under 3 weeks for me now hurrah!! can i have a gin & tonic ready in the delivery suite do you think?!? heres hoping...

I had poached eggs on toast this morning which gave me fine levels AND no horrid tightenings - I was nervous but staaarving so HAD to have it, I DID walk around the house briskly alot straight after eating, so maybe thats the answer for me, even though I don't lke the idea of it, I have to be as active as possible especially after eating something.

LauraKB · 08/10/2009 09:36

Morning All

BB at least that's an improvement, you're right, you need to eat something.

You could always pack a little hip flask in your hospital bag !.

Hope you're all having a good day.

L, x.

LauraKB · 09/10/2009 10:07

Morning all

Hope you are all well.

BB unusual not to have heard from you, hope everything is ok.

I had a moderate success with low fat sausages, homemade chips done in the oven with fry light spray and beans for tea last night. It tasted fab and was 6.8 and hour after. Was testing after only an hour cos ended up having late tea/early bed.

Hope you're all having a good day.

L, x.

brightonbleach · 09/10/2009 12:26

mooorning all! hope everyone's well?

hey Laura, all fine this end don't worry- we had a NCT class yesterday all day. It was good, if a bit exhausting being the entire day! still 2 days to go yet as well, sunday and monday. one of the days is breastfeeding so that should be useful as I don't have a clue. yesterday was particularly good for DH as it meant he could ask practical questions (teacher is a M/W) about the actual day of delivery, labour symptoms and so on; and also there was 5 other couples, all first time parents, and we all got on well and shared worries which was good - we had a laugh as well! I feel more informed and reassured, so this course is well worth doing. a bit embarassing when they make all the men give us backrubs (!) but that stuff aside there was some good tips, info and we did an hour of yoga breathing as well

we walked half an hour home which meant I could have a bowl of pasta with DH's gorgeous arrabiata home-made sauce, so I was very happy indeed yesterday - even got some proper sleep last night believe it or not!! wooohoooo let the good times roll

any news y'all? hows everyone coping?

MrsR2004 · 10/10/2009 21:57

Hi all,

Just wanted to check in and see how you all are???

I'm in hospital came for my diabetes clinic wed and bp pressure was raised again and protein in my urine so i had to do a 24 hour urine sample. Took it back thurs and they kept me in so have been in since! Looks like I do have pre-eclampsia, early stages at the moment as they are still happy with bloods but not with urine, doc said there was a significant amount of protein in urine and no sign on infection so points to PE, they suspect bloods will get worse??. Blood pressure is borderline but i am already on bp meds but my head is killing me, it's so painful. Think they are trying to work out whether they can watch me from afar or need to keep me in?????

It's been harder to control my bs levels, have had some lows and some highs as the food choice is limited and often not enough but doing my best and due for a scan on wed.

I'm missing my hubby and son like mad and have stacks of work to do (self employed) hence having the laptop!

Sorry for the downer ladies, hopefully they will let me out soon huh? How's everyone else doing???

xxx

LauraKB · 11/10/2009 11:17

Hey MrsR, sorry to hear you're having such a very rough time. At least you are in the best place for them to keep an eye on you (altough probably doesn't feel like it!)

How long have you got to go now?

I am doing not too bad thanks, levels are pretty stable at the moment (touch wood!) and managed to get most of the stuff for hospital bags yesterday and they're pretty much now packed.

They cancelled my joint diabetic/obstetric clinic appointment for Wednesday and have moved to the following week, so was a bit stressed about that, but I think I'll make an appointment with the midwife this week just to check BP etc.

Hope you are feeling better/home soon.

Hope everyone else is doing ok.

L, x.

brightonbleach · 11/10/2009 13:08

hi all just off to my 2nd NCT class in a mo.

MrsR argh you poor thing! really sorry to hear that, you must be going up the wall - really hope that it will lower and they'll let you out soon. keep us updated if possible?

I'm fine here, all quiet - no BH lately even -, DH is painting baby's section of the flat bright yellow as we speak and this weekend he has also scrubbed the bathroom & cleaned the oven for me - good fella!! doing stuff I don't feel up to doing - so we're feeling quite organised now. whilst he's at work this week I will carry on clearing out cupboards and stuff, we've thrown out loads of things, quite cathartic - we own a 1-bed flat & have decided not to move (YET!) as the markets awful, but rentals are high and our mortgage is fairly low, so we will end up moving when bubba is about 6 months old I imagine! For now, LO has half our bedroom, all painted yellow with gorgeous crib and wardrobe etc., so it'll do for the first few months...

brightonbleach · 13/10/2009 10:01

morning all how are we all getting along? hows things MrsR if you're online at all, hope you are improving...

I'm fine, sleeping somewhat better even had hospital app yesterday - now my next appointment is my induction! 2 weeks today, if he doesn't decide to arrive under his own steam before then that is (and he's very welcome to do that, ooooh yes). I had to wait hours & hours to be seen yesterday for my 20mins appointment, in a very hot waiting room with seemingly loads of very moany preggers people and their entire families (why do some people take 15 family members to these routine check ups?!?!), urk. they seem pleased with me though, and didn't even scan me yesterday - they seem to think he is average-ish (top end of average!) weight and right side down from their quick exam yesterday, so on course for natural delivery we think. so far anyways...

hope everyone's feeling as well as can be today

LauraKB · 13/10/2009 10:42

Hi Everyone

Hope you're all well.

BB That sounds fab, glad things are on course.

Take care all.

L, x.

LauraKB · 14/10/2009 09:53

Morning Ladies

Hope you are all well. I am doing not too badly with my levels as managed to have wholemeal pasta with Bertolli Pecorino sauce and smoked sausage for tea last night and get a reading of 6.3 2 hours later so that was good.

I had BHs all day yesterday, literally from about when I got up to when I went to bed, and I've had them the same again this morning. Will defo mention to the midwife this afternoon.

Has anyone else had this?

MrsR BB - How are you keeping?

L, x.

MrsR2004 · 14/10/2009 20:30

Hi ladies,

Thanks for your best wishes

Well, they let me go home monday night with a follow up in clinic this morning and they have admitted me again. Looks like i will be in until 'D' day now! They expect that I will only get worse from this point and they would rather I got worse in hospital than at home so they can keep close eye on me and baby.

I know I am in the right place but it's soooo frustrating and upsetting, I miss my husband and my little boy like mad and I feel this huge sense of guilt and worry over how this will effect my son. He is nearly 4 and very grown up/understanding but I know he misses his mummy as he was stroking me alot yesterday and practically sat on me all day, bless him.

Baby weight was estimated at 8lb 1oz today and I am 34+4 - yes that big !!!!!!
I think they will probably induce me 36-37 weeks or whenever things take a turn for the worse??? I can't bare to be in hospital for any longer.

Hows everyone else? BB your appointment sounds like it went well, 2 weeks or less till baby, how exciting. Laura how was midwife?

xxxx
