Hi

Just had results of my GTT come back high and have an appointment to see two doctors next week. I think one might be a consultant and the other a dietician. Has anyone had any experience of GD in pregnancy? If so what's likely to happen at my appointment?

I'm a bit concerned that I'll be 31 weeks when I have my appointment which seems a bit late.

congratulations BB sorry to hear that the birth was traumatic though..but that you have a wonderful end result...

Im struggling to keep my blood sugars under control at the moment so phoned the dietician up for advice..seems im eating too much carbs..so need to cut them down.
Went to the diabetes clinic on weds..my head was mashed by the time I left...after seeing diabetes consultant, obstetrician, midwife, diabetic nurse and dietician

Im on clexane as well now..so am really hoping to avoid insulin..however the obstetrician said its unlikely I will as Ive been diagnosed so early.
Im being seen twice monthly and from 28 weeks will have 2 weekly growth scans with a view to induction at 38 weeks.

Hi just a query really my sugars are being really badly behaved at moment so a different woman i saw at clinic on friday said she would try metaformin before insulin. Is anyone else taking this?

I have decided not to take it yet and speak to my consultant on monday as my sugars were really high last night so rang the hospital where i will be giving birth (this is not my local hospital as they now dont have consultants there), i asked about the metaformin cos in the leaflet it says not to take in pregnancy and to go on insulin, the doctir there said its not licensed for pregnancy and currently just undergoing trials for pregnant women and they wouldnt have prescribed that!!!

Hi All

Sorry to hear you are not doing so well with your levels, hope they can sort it out soon.

Well Chloe Rosalind arrived on Tuesday night at 21.53, weighing 7lb 8oz. We ended up having to have forceps as the cord was round her neck but all was well.

Labour was induced and was 10.5 hours in total so not bad really!! They checked Chole's blood sugars for the first 24 hours to make sure they were not too low but they were fine so that was a relief.

We're home now and turning night into day a little bit, but grabbing sleep where I can!!

Good luck to all, I'll keep an eye on how your getting on.

L, x.

homeschooler29 · 23/11/2009 10:22

Huge congratulations Laura on the birth of your daughter. A lovely size too.

Glad labour went ok. I am petrified of it this time round despite having 2 previously good labours. I think its the not knowing what to expect.

Hope you manage to get some much needed sleep xxx

I am struggling with my blood sugars too at the moment. I have a prescription for Metformin but have been told not to collect it yet. I ended up with lots of ketones so they told me to eat a little bit more which I have done but this then affects my sugars.

I have heard of other pregnant diabetic women being given this instead of insulin as apparantly it allows you to eat a little more without affecting your blood sugars so much. The diabetic doctor even told me that they actually like you to go on as it helps you lose weight. I am almost certain that they will put me on it at my appointment tomorrow.

I am worrying about the size of this little one already. She was 3lb 12 at my 28 week scan and I have another scan booked for 32 weeks and I read that babies put on around half a lb a week which would make her nearly 6lb at 32 weeks .

I have had 2 previously large babies at 10lb 7 (ds) and 9lb 7 (dd) but I didn't have GD then (was tested with dd and came back negative). It is 7 and a half yrs since dd was born and I'm worried about having a bigger baby than my other two were or that she is so big that I end up with a caesarean which petrifies me. My other 2 were both normal deliveries, no problems with labour or birth, but after ds was born I was severely anaemic and needed a blood tranfusion and I am scared that will happen again.

When do you actually discuss the birth with your mw or consultant? I'm 30 weeks now and have been told they offer induction at 38 weeks.

Sorry this is so long. Just really starting to worry about the birth now.

Hello

How is everyone? I had a scan last Wednesday and bubba was measuring 5lb 1oz at 31+5 and the little madame has turned breech. Really hoping she turns soon as I desperately don't want a c-section.

I seem to be struggling at the moment as I just feel like I eat the same stuff all the time so am off out shopping later to try and find something different as its starting to get to me. I just have to keep telling myself that its for the best.

At diabetic clinic last week they were happy enough with my readings dispite having a couple of highs they can normally be explained. They do seem to have risen though over the last couple of days and have been the higher end or even slightly over what they should be.

I was naughty on Saturday as it was my 30th birthday and so I had some birthday cake and my reading before bed was 8.1. Going to try and up my walking this week to try and get the levels a bit lower.

Hope everyone else is doing ok.

mummytopebs · 07/12/2009 09:22

Hi Emma 8.1 after cake is fantastic x I have now been put on metformin as readings were going up and up this was around the 31 week mark.

I had a scan at 31 week to and bubba was measuring just under 5lb so very similar and they said this was fine. I have got another scan next week at 34 week so will see how much she has grown by then!! My readings have been ok to apart from a very freaky 9.8 over the weekend when i woke up!

I to am very bored of eating the same food and keep getting really upset that i cant eat sweet things, think the hormones are kicking in. Apart from the cake have you cut out sweet things completely?

homeschooler29 · 08/12/2009 14:40

Hi Mummytopebs

I have tried to stop all the sweet stuff completely but had been allowing myself the odd 2 finger kitkat or mini milk after my lunch and they had been ok but my levels have been creeping up this last week or so so I've had to stop.

I also keep getting upset about it all and am having a day like that today where I feel like no matter what I do it will never be good enough and my sugars will never get back under control.

I'm so bored of eating the same stuff all the time. I'm quite a fussy eater anyway but I like to eat the wrong type of stuff and was a carbaholic so have had to cut right back on my carbs.

I know its not for long but its not helped by hubby and kids eating mince pies and chocolates in front of me!!

I've just been told I can start Metformin today. Got to take one tablet with my tea then at breakfast and tea tomorrow then each meal after that. Hope that helps. I had soup for lunch with 2 pieces of granary wholemeal bread and then went to Tescos shopping so was walking round for an hour and a half and still my sugars were 8.9!! I have no idea why as normally it would give me a reading of around 7.5!

I find one of the hardest things is not snacking. I was a terrible snacker before being diagnosed with GD and am finding I'm getting really quite hungry mid-afternoon but was told by dietician not to snack as it would affect my sugar readings.

Hope things go well at your 34 week scan. I have my 34 week one on 23rd December and am desperately hoping she turns from breech as I'm scared to death of having a c-section.

mummytopebs · 08/12/2009 17:34

Hi Emma

I to am sick of dh and dd eating chocolate in front of me!!! Shocking.

I have found that most soup has quite a lot of sugar in, i was told that if there are more than 5g of sugar in 100 grammes dont eat it, if that is any help. The only soup i eat now is baxters chicken broth and i cant have bread now as this sends me to high!!

I am usually ok with potatoes and pasta so am quite lucky in that respect. I havent been having anything sweet at all and it is killing me. Hopefully the metformin will start to help, it gave me a bit of a jiggy tummy for around 3 days but since then has been fine. I started on just 1 tablet with my tea and am now on 1 morning and 1 teatime.

I am having planned c section as had pre-eclampsia with dd so had a section with her so got the choice and decided to have another one when i got the diabetes. I am worried at the minute as have been reading that diabetes can cause pre-eclamapsia and i am at a higher risk of getting it anyway cos had it last time. This was the week i got it in my last pregnancy so i am watching blood pressure closely this week!!

memorylapse · 09/12/2009 17:01

hi ladies

I went to clinic last weds and was put onto insulin..my evening readings were just too high..although I thought I was being good.

I discovered that fairly innocuous looking things like crisps etc shoot my sugars up..but strangely..nutri grain oaty bars..dont

Sprite21 · 18/07/2011 10:39

Hi,
Would like to join in the discussion. I was really pleased to find this forum online after being diagnosed with gd last week at 30wks. I initially found the diagnosis quite shocking (burst into tears) but now feeling like I may be able to cope with it and not as 'poor me' as I was last week. Reading the other posts has been really helpful in thinking about how to get through this.

It seemed so abrupt that after one high reading from the glucose test (8.1) I suddenly had this diagnosis to deal with and this huge change in terms of my diet and having to test my bs. Still, I'm getting used to it and so far have been able to regulate my levels through diet, though I understand this may get more difficult as the pregnancy progresses and it's early days. I'm surprised some people have been advised not to snack as I was told to eat little and often and have been finding this works well for me.
I have been booked in for a scan and another midwife visit at 32 wks so am feeling like I need to 'prove' that I can regulate my blood sugars by then in order to avoid too many medical interventions, which I am dreading.
Annoyingly, the birth centre I wanted to go to has really strict regulations around birth and this now moves me into a higher risk category, technically making me ineligible.

I was wondering if anyone else had been able to give birth at a midwife led birth centre and to what extent you can argue for this. Of course pending how everything goes.
Also, how soon did you get to see a consultant? I have only seen the diabetes midwife so far and no talk of a dietician or consultant. Is is the latter who would decide about an induction and do they always induce?
Sorry, lots of questions at this point and I hope to be more helpful myself at a later point once I get my head around this a bit more. Helpful to hear that bs levels are a bit hit and miss as similarly my readings have been quite different after the same foods.

Looking forward to more discussions and thanks for listening.

Hi, sorry to derail but this thread is 2 years old.

quickchat · 15/07/2012 18:51

Hi, I have been told I need a diabetic test next week as I have high glucose in my urine and that was 2.5 hours after having breakfast which was just weetabix and milk - no sugar.

Im just over 33 weeks PG and I booked in with a BMI of 25.5. Not too bad Blush I think? This PG (3rd) I have craved sugar so Im not surprised. My thing was fresh orange and other fruit juices. Obviously I have ditched them now. I started a low GI diet on Thursday when I was told.

Thing is - I feel AWFUL. weak, cranky and probably coincidence but I have an upset stomach today and felt sick. I was up loads last night drinking water and peeing, much more than ever. I usually have a sip of water as a glass sits next to my bed for my thyroid tablets in the morning but I was actually up filling it 3 times and downing it!

My thyroid levels are fine but I was diagnosed with anemia 4 weeks ago - oh yes it's all going well!!

They took bloods on Thursday to make sure that it is better since iron tablets. I certainly was feeling a lot better until the last few days so im wondering if it sounds like diabetes? Does anyone else feel like that?

My test isn't until next Friday but im wondering if I should see a Doc sooner as I really feel bad.

mrswoz · 16/07/2012 13:11

Hi quickchat, I posted about this a few days ago as I've got to have a GTT next week (23rd) as well. I thought there was a current thread on gestational diabetes, but can't seem to find it either!

I will bump my thread so you can read it. My 3rd pregnancy also, I am 29 weeks. If you've felt rubbish the last few days, could be just a blip, I've had nausea/loose motions on and off throughout the pregnancy, just put mine down to hormones, tho if you don't feel better by the end of the week I would visit your GP if I were you.

When you say your test is next week, do you mean this Fri 20th or next, 27th? Surprised you would have to wait as long as that, the only reason I've had to wait is that my MW couldn't get a vein so booked me in with the nurse instead, for all my blood tests incl 28 week Hb check. Had that done this morning so not sure yet if anaemic or not, but my booking Hb was only 11.4 so am expecting it to be lower than that, just a case of how low I guess!

I second your idea about low GI diet since finding out you need the GTT. Another posted suggested that on my thread as well, tho I was following pretty much that kind of diet loosely anyway, but I do like to eat sweets, cake and chocolate and would happily do so, without much thought for the consequences! I have shown more restraint this week, for sure!
