Im 15 weeks pregnant and wondering what other mums to be are eating as everyone goes on about healthy eating and getting your 5 a day when your pregnant.

I have struggled with my diet due to morning sickness, no appetite, constipation etc etc.

I eat healthy ish but really dont get 5 a day and would like to know what other peoples typical diet is?

I'm nearly 10 weeks.....eating anything and everything in sight, it's the only way to stave off the sickness!
Trying my best to be good, but just crumbled and had big glass of ice-cold Pepsi and an Aero. Ah well.

maybebaby23 · 30/07/2009 21:09

Im struggling at the moment too. Last time i forced down loads of fruit and veg, well more than 5 a day but i was sick all the way through. This time if i eat even a tiny amount of veg it comes back!? (which i suppose happened last time but i kept on piling it down and so was sick everyday!) Im ok with fruit but cant really stomach a lot of it. Im trying to include a variety of healthy foods and not stressing over not eating much fruit/veg. Im not sick really which is great. I just dont feel like ANYTHING at all lol.

Feel so sick I can hardly eat a thing. Manage about 1/4 of every meal. Yoghurt and grapes are about the only thing I can eat.

Have to cook for ds1 and can hardly bear the smell of cooking

If you can eat, try to get as much fresh food as you can x

Longtalljosie · 31/07/2009 04:11

Just do your best. The baby will take what it needs nutrition-wise - I'm taking it you're already on folic acid, you could also try an integrated pregnancy supplement like Pregnacare?

Since you're 15 weeks pregnant, you may find in the next few weeks you feel a lot better anyway. I found probiotic yoghurt helpful to get everything moving again digestion-wise too.

YanknCock · 31/07/2009 09:28

5 a day.... ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!

I was so sure I'd continue my healthy eating into pregnancy and got a very rude wake up call with hyperemesis.

I think when I was 15 weeks, the only things that stayed down were peanut butter and jam sandwiches on white bread (normally am a wholemeal girl) or American macaroni and cheese (from a box, all E numbers, less than 2% cheese). Oh and regular Coke to drink. Fecking awful.

Am 36 weeks now and only stopped being sick at 30 weeks. Lately I get more fruit and veg, and have given up worrying about the first 6 months where my diet was crap. Apparently babies will take whatever nutrients they need out of anything you eat, and it's more important that you were healthy to begin with in your pregnancy (so my mom says anyway--she's a public health nurse, but could just be trying to make me feel better!).

TakeLovingChances · 31/07/2009 09:33

I often stand looking into the fridge and cupboard, hungry, but can't face eating anything there.

I have always struggled to eat my '5 a day', before pregnancy and now I am 9 weeks pg.

Something which works for me is: drinking smoothie drinks or fruit juice - these can have up to 2 fruit portions for a glass, and are good at keeping the digestive system going.

Also, I made a lovely pot of soup yesterday, lots of veg in that for myself and DH.

Cooking the soup was a bit difficult, as preparing everything was making me feel sick, but now it's made it's lovely

Hope that helps.

Don't worry about it. When pregnant with DC1 I couldn't face the throught of anything vegetable - hubby thought it was funny to wave broccoli at me and watch me heave... Did have the problem that crisps, muffins and biscuits did nothing to help the constipation. Try to force down some dried fruit, or pears are very good.
Anyway DC was born perfectly healthy and happy - so it really doesn't matter that much.
(Also you don't actually have to sepnd that 'Healthy Eating' grant on veg anyway!! )

bubblesincambridge · 31/07/2009 14:44

Getting your 5 a day will help with the constipation though so its worth a go. Its not so hard...

Try some blueberries or strawberries on your breakfast cereal - yummy.

Have a glass of juice or smoothie - yum.

Have an apple mid afternoon or one of those peaches that dribbles down your face - yum.

That only leaves 2 veg to have with your evening meal. Mix it in with sauces if you want it not to taste of veg.

Your baby is like a parasite and will take nutrients from you that it needs leaving you short which may be why you don't feel so good.

skorpion · 31/07/2009 18:41

Carbs, carbs, carbs. I ate quite healthily before, but now try to get the nutrients from fruit. Veg doesn't do it for me much. Unless in potato shape
I can't eat meat much so found myself on iron pills to up my HB levels. I eat lots of bread and cheese. And yougurt. But mostly bread and cheese. But I do take Pregnacare.

Southwestwhippet · 31/07/2009 18:56

I'm 15 weeks too. I go through phases of being good but I have to confess I eat cornflakes for breakfast every morning as they don't taste too bad if I have to throw them up again

I've never been very good at eating vegetables but I eat loads of fruit - I had about 7 pieces today - and some of the girls at work are going through a 'salad box' craze at lunch time which I join in on.

Can't stop eating crisps though - one of my friends said I should call the baby Walkers the other day.

laurawantsababy · 31/07/2009 19:26

Asda Special mash or smiles - The only thing I can stomach at the moment. Im 14 weeks.

crankytwanky · 31/07/2009 22:46

Skorpian I was going to say that!

All I can face.

I usually eat well too.

Thingiebob · 31/07/2009 23:33

I know how you feel. Recently I only fancy certain things and they are usually fatty, salty and generally unhealthy such as pizza and bacon sandwiches! For the first time ever I am drinking Regular Coke, never liked coke before and I have found that I can't stomach brown bread which I normally have all the time, and have suddenly switched to white bread. The margerine has gone out of the fridge and I'm eating real butter for the first time in years. I am also a bit obsessed with cheese.
On the other hand, I've gone right off sweet things and I do have the odd day when I have a desire to eat tomatoes and fresh fruit all day and can't face junky stuff!

I've decided that I'm just going to eat what my body wants but in small portions, shove smoothies down my throat and take Pregnacare and not worry!

I'm forcing fruit down my throat and when I really can't stomach it, I drink lots of juice and smoothies.

scratchet · 01/08/2009 11:50

Thingiebob, your diet is exactly as mine is at the moment! Am 23+ and still can't stomach wholemeal bread and marg!

Looks like its gonna be white bread, full fat coke and lurpack til delivery!

Ps girls, i found that apples really hurt if you are unfortunate enough to vomit shortly after eating them. Bananas, strawberries and peaches = not too bad!

Thingiebob · 01/08/2009 21:17

It's strange isn't it? I was brought up eating brown, granary and wholemeal bread and have always eaten it finding it nicer than white. Now I can't touch it.

My DH reckons it's something to do with white bread being converted to sugar quickly in the body. I just think it gives me less indigestion! Plus sandwiches with fishfingers or bacon taste nicer with lurpack and white bread! Margerine tastes like utter crap now.

The coke thing is just wrong - I've always been anti-coke but now ice cold... yum! Only a little bit, mind or I feel a bit unwell. My consultant says my sugar levels are fine but i do need watch out as I've been told I need a GTT test, or is that something everyone has?

KnockedUpDelf · 01/08/2009 22:23

I have reverted to my childhood.

Marmite toast & a cup of tea.
Scones with strawberry jam.
Plain white rice with cold sliced tomatoes. Weird but hey.

I just want carbs, carbs and MORE carbs.

DH and I just shared a pepperoni (extra spicy) pizza and a tiramisu from our fave italian place and even though it is 10pm and I want to feel guilty about it, all I can feel is deeply satisfied and now I am going to bed.

JeanLouiseFinch · 02/08/2009 22:27

Knocked up - I have also reverted to childhood and can't get enough toast with marmite. Carbs are the only thing that really satisfies.
I've also got an addiction to crisps yet never really ate them before.

Mybox · 02/08/2009 22:28

I need a fried egg sandwich & I need it now - but we've no eggs.......

blonde36er · 02/08/2009 23:15

KnockedUpDelf- I too have been eating carbs like they're going out of fashion. Mmmmm, carby goodness. And fizzy pop, preferably lemonade or cream soda, but anything will do.

I seem to be eating mainly crap at the moment but am consoling myself with the fact that I can only seem to get through half a meal before the nausea takes over, so it's all balanced out.

Strangely I've lost all desire for bacon, which was my Saturday morning treat before, but now it's been replaced with a need for crumpets...

Jemima123 · 05/08/2009 14:55

I am addicted to fizzy drinks, also quite fond of fruit juice and basically anything "nice but not that good" - and pre-pregnancy all I drank was water and the odd cuppa, have never been bothered for fizzy before. Except for the alcoholic kind, I wonder if this is a substitute??

Also love cheese at the moment, and pizza (but that always was my fave lazy tea). Hubs is on a health kick and it's driving me mad, I just want to eat rubbish!

Good to hear I'm not the only one...

bubblesincambridge · 06/08/2009 12:05

Craving cheese and marmite at the mo (18 weeks).

Would kill for a fried egg, soft one, but I gather they're off the menu for a long while yet.

newarrival · 06/08/2009 12:46

It's so great to hear that so many of us are having the same experiences. I'm new to all of this (mumsnet ec) and first time mum to be. I'm 22 weeks pregnant & the sickness has only just stopped (I hope).
As for eating healthily!... i was lucky if I could keep anything down in the first 2 months... now I've an addiction to coca cola which I've never really drank before or any fizzy drinks for that matter. I like all things sweet.. especially ice cream & chocolate.

McSnail · 06/08/2009 13:16

I heard that the baby is fine even if your diet is a bit rubbish (and let's face it - I don't know any woman whose diet was brilliant in the first trimester - you feel so ill)

Think about women in third world countries - it's amazing how healthy their babies are at birth considering the mothers' poor diets.

WRT diet in pregnancy - your eating habits change so much in the course of the nine and a half months or so you're pregnant. You go through phases (well, I did - due to give birth any day now) and the types of food your body will want might surprise you! For months now I've been addicted to fruit - something I NEVER ate before (more of a vegetable girl)

Don't worry too much about diet - as long as you actually EAT, your baby will be fine. Take supplements if you're really worried.

sheeplikessleep · 06/08/2009 14:11

is it true that if you crave sweet foods it's a girl, and if you crave cheese/pickle/vinegary crisps, it's a boy?
