I thought it might make me feel better if anyone who took longer than a year could share their success stories and if they did anything different the month they conceived?

What contraception were you on before?

laurawantsababy · 07/05/2009 10:52

It took us 18 months with dd. She is now 11mo and we are ttc no 2!

It sounds daft but once we stopped really thinking about and started enjoying going out etc it happened.

Dont give up hope it does take time for some of us x

Hi there, when trying for ds1 I conceived after a uear and had an early mc then he came along a few months later so was around 18min total. I remember vividly how frustrating and upsetting it was, so sympathies. Hi brother, on the other hand, came along first time which I was amazed about!!

I agree with the other posts - happenned for us as soon as we stopped (or lessened) worrying about it - I was so desperate to not go over a year that once it did I kind of mentally shelved it for a few months while we were moving house and of course it happenned as soon as we moved. I was very stressed at work and changed jobs which helped too.

Physically, the only thing I did different on both occasions I conceived my children was to really know when I was ovulating and they were both conceived at ovulation. I think I got much better at this with time (using persona) and now, when we go for ds3, I am quite confident I will know when to go for it. In hindsight, for much of that year I was just assuming I ovulated around day14 so we would go for it then then give a bit. I now know that I mostly ovulate on day 17/18 so I think in hindsight we were missing the window most of the time.

Dont get disheartened, work on really pinning down when you are ovulating if you dont already know and go to the doctors to start investigations just in case (I found it reassuring once the professionals took over and in fact found out I was pg the day before our first ivf appt)

good luck!

xfabba · 07/05/2009 11:02

oh yes!!! I forgot that, both my conceptions were doggy style too!! DP is convinced that is what does the trick

xfabba · 07/05/2009 11:02

and he had 3 months of no booze and zinc tablets - sorry forgetting all this until reading other posts.

yellowflowers · 07/05/2009 11:05

Thanks all - keep the stories coming. I am on the conception threads a lot and have loads of support there and have just had first fertility appt at hospital (being sent for lots of tests). Came off pill few years ago and had regular periods since (well more of less regular, anything from 30-38 days) and been ttc for 18 months. Have pcos and taking metformin but think I do ovulate though fertility clinic is in process of checking this out.

Going to tell dh we have to do more doggy style!

try and pin down exactly when you ovulate so the next month you can concentrate on the days before and during (might be hard with pcos if things are irregular I know). I think the official advice is to have sex every couple of days during the month as well to try and catch the window - which is actually very small - can be just a few hours in your thirties apparently.

Have you tried persona or ovulation predictor kits? Mine definitely indicated ovulation on both occasions wheras some other months they didnt.

WowOoo · 07/05/2009 11:15

Not me, but I know many who had to wait a year plus.
Second time yes, over a year.

Enjoy all the shagging...

First time coincided with a spate of weddings and drunken weekends in hotels. Ah, the days.....

yellowflowers · 07/05/2009 11:18

Have been temping so think I know when i ovulate but definitely doing the every other day thing from day 8 until about day 24. Ovulation predictor kits apparently not worth it with pcos.

sounds like you've got it covered, maybe try some relaxation techniques, de-stress etc - as well as lots of doggy style shagging!!!

I also had just started acupuncture the month before I conceived ds1 I remember now - may have been coincidence but anything is worth a shot - it was very relaxing (surprisingly).

It's all coming back to me now - I had DP in a course of zinc, selenium and high strengh vit E for the 3 months before as well.

I also made him do the "putting his balls in ice cold water thing" too - seriously, not becasue I really believed it would work (would have tried anything at the time - sure you know what I mean) - but mainly for a laugh to stop the whole thing getting too grim

Anecdotally from friends, lots of people seemed to finally concieve after a holiday, house move etc when they had stopped focusing so much on it for a bit.

Oh and don't forget to enjoy all the sex - once you have the baby there will be far less opportunity ..........

xfabba · 07/05/2009 11:25

PS and I'll stop going on after this, I found the Zita West clinic website and books very helpful (I went there for the acupuncture) - I think she has all the up to date info about diet, vitamins etc and good preparation if you need to go down the ivf route.

ZacharyQuack · 07/05/2009 11:26

DD1 took 3 years. Finally started on clomid and monitoring my cycle, success in the first cycle.

DD2 first unprotected shag.

alana39 · 07/05/2009 11:27

We tried for a year, went to doctors and got referred to fertility clinic. The appointment was on the Wednesday after getting back from a 2 week holiday - went along to it feeling shocking, 2 days later realised no period for a while + nausea might mean something (and it was too late to avoid all the wine / unpasteurised soft cheese / very rare meat / uncooked eggs that had been consumed on holiday, which all had no effect). Still wonder if it was just my body relaxing once I knew we were in the system to get some help.

lauraloo09 · 07/05/2009 11:33

it took me and DH over 2 years to conceive, I was put oon clomid and had to have laparoscopy ops done to make sure everything inside was working right. My next stage was IVF at the age of 24! By some wonder the month the doc told me i wouldn't get pregnant, due to blood results, i actually did fall pregnant and I am currently 33+5 weeks pregnant with a baby girl

fingers crossed it'll happen for you soon x

annmar · 07/05/2009 11:40

It took us 3 years.

We went to the doctors after a year and got referred for tests.

Took about 18 months for all the tests to be done. We were then referred to the fertility clinic.

The appointment for that came through quite quick, had some more tests including a couple of internal ultrasounds.

I found out I was pregnant just before our next appointment.

DH reckons the internal scans opened or dislodged something that was blocking the sperm. I think I relaxed knowing something was happening.

Mumcentreplus · 07/05/2009 11:46

18mths for DD1...then 9mths after birth DD2

Mumcentreplus · 07/05/2009 11:47

I just stopped stressing about it and started to enjoy meself

Mummyfor3 · 07/05/2009 11:48

15 months, then miscarried 3x times, but each time conceived v quickly again.

One fifth of healthy couples take more than 1 year to conceive.
If you are under 30, give it a year at least. If you are 30-35 get some medical advice sooner, if you are over 35 see doc now.

Good luck!

yellowflowers · 07/05/2009 12:09

I'm nearly 31.

Great story lauraloo09 and am so pleased for you.

Was hoping I would conceive once I knew I was having fertility clinic appt in the 'I just relaxed and it happened before my appt' way. Alas no job... here's hoping for next few months though before any of the invasive tests.

Oh, you've got the ball rolling already, good for you.

FWIW, I had DS1 a few weeks before my 37th birhtday, DS2 a year later, and DS3 last year aged 42 .

So in the lottery of baby making your chances cannot be that dreadful, surely ?

yawningprincess · 07/05/2009 12:24

it took us 2 years of ttc- was referred to fertility specialist, got appointment through and vomited= start of morning sickness! 2nd pregnancy which I am currently coming to the end of , we decided that in July last year as it took so long to get pregnant first time round we would not be 'careful', fell pregnant immediately.

There's no science to it! Good Luck and chin up xxx
