Is anyone actually able to eat healthily in their first trimester?

I seem to be living off Ritz crackers, with butter and that particularly cheap chedder that's really wangy... I can't touch protien, ie meat, and my stomach only wants to eat sugar, and carbs. Preferably both togeather. And I feel sick at dinner time, so don't feel like exerting myself to cook a nutritious tofu stir-fry with 6 different coloured vegetables in it..
Surely I'm not the only one out there?

hmmm

Haribo... are they healthy?

FrankMustard · 05/05/2009 13:42

You're not alone! I couldn't face much in pregnancy and with no 4 all I could do was suck lemons, I felt so sick all the time! I suppose I got vit C....but those and pronatal folic acid supplements with the odd bowl of grape nuts were about all I had for weeks!!

ceebie · 05/05/2009 13:42

I ate loads and loads of fruit - especially strawberries, raspberries, clementines and kiwis. Also loads and loads of toast. Carrot sticks worked well for me too. I know what you mean about just wanting carbs and no meat.

Oh and baked beans on toast. Baked beans are surprisingly healthy!

mosschops30 · 05/05/2009 13:44

Nope, and a friend actually ate burgers for breakfast until 12 weeks!!

I am currently living off a diet of mainly baked beans, with anything!

nickytwotimes · 05/05/2009 13:44

Don't sweat it.
It is a biological thing to do with your body favouring high calorie crap.
You can eat well in the 2nd and third trimester. The baby will get all the good stuff anyway.

Bramshott · 05/05/2009 13:46

No - all babies are made of crisps !

Gateau · 05/05/2009 14:25

Yep, ate anything and everything, healthy or otherwise

Luxmum · 05/05/2009 14:57

Ohhhhh... crisps!!! my mouth is watering at the thought of ketchup flavour crisps, which over here, only come in huge kilo bags of the stuff... FAB!
Yeah morningpaper, and Haribo...wonder if theri fruit flavoured yogurt filled chewy thingies count in some tiny way as my daily allowance of fruit or calcium?? . I'm off tomorrow to see my Dr, he's going to go mad if he finds out... he is REALLY strict about weight gain during pregnancy..

Last time round I was so sick I could barely eat at all (healthily or otherwise). This time I am constantly craving crap. There's currently a tub of Ben & Jerry's in the freezer calling to me ....

Trikken · 05/05/2009 16:34

just being able to eat is something. actually managed a banana today which is good.

sockmonster · 05/05/2009 18:24

I am eating obscene amounts of buttery toast with marmite. Really want mars bars but haven't gone there yet. Not much else appeals really.... I'll do the carrot sticks later, honest

Picante · 05/05/2009 18:28

I am 25 weeks and still eating crap. Still feeling sick and I figure I'd rather not feel sick than eat lettuce.

MustHaveaVeryShortMemory · 05/05/2009 18:30

What is it about haribo??? They must be really good for you...

mogwai · 05/05/2009 18:34

toast, crisps, cheese, bread, ice cream.

They're all cream coloured.

It's nature's way of making sure you don't eat highly coloured (and therefore poisonous) food.

See, there's a real reason!

funtimewincies · 05/05/2009 19:00

I'm 10 weeks and my baby has not been over-blessed in the fruit and veg department so far. The only thing that stops the sickness at the moment is Special K washed down with full-fat coke. I'm taking pregnancy vitamins to make myself feel less guilty .

Don't fret, with ds I craved high fat, high sugar and high salt foods all the way through. He's never had a tummy bug, isn't overweight (in fact looks a bit gangly ) and caused a bit of a fuss at his 2 year checkup when she had to look at the list of things he would be doing at 3 instead [pfb preening emoticon]!

Sockmonster - marmitey toast is just fab, my B12 levels must be through the roof!

YanknCock · 05/05/2009 19:06

24 weeks and still eating crap. And as of ten minutes ago, still fecking being sick.
WHY WHY WHY??? Toast, cheese, peaches & apple juice for dinner. Was that just too healthy for you baby? Was it?? What the hell do you want from me????

Folkestone · 05/05/2009 19:13

I'm in the same boat, 12 weeks and all I seem to want to eat are toast, chocolate, ice cream, crisps, sandwiches and anything that I should stay away from really.

My poor salads are being thrown out at the end of the work day!

EffieGadsby · 05/05/2009 19:22

When I did a 'last 15 minutes' half an hour ago, the words "buttery toast with Marmite" flew out at me. The loaf now doesn't know what's hit it. 15 mins ago saw me stood in front of the toaster shouting "come onnnn!" at it, as it was taking too long to brown my toast. I would never have imagined it was going to be like this; I am a starch monster.

funtimewincies · 05/05/2009 19:51

EffieGadsby. We're here to share your shame pain.

HariboGuzzler · 05/05/2009 20:41

I'm on Heinz tomato soup, toast and if I'm feeling really adventureous, maybe a baked potato. And obviously sweeties.

Even just the smell of "proper" food sends me barfing.

I'm coming up to 9 weeks. When can I expect this to stop???

YanknCock · 05/05/2009 20:48

'It's nature's way of making sure you don't eat highly coloured (and therefore poisonous) food.'

I would buy that, if only I hadn't spent three weeks being able to eat nothing but American Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, all artificial, less than 2% cheese, and a stunning bright orange colour not found in nature.

mogwai · 05/05/2009 20:51

hahahhaha

nature is trying to poison your baby!

Run for the hills!

Longtalljosie · 05/05/2009 21:51

Hmmm - Haribo is as highly coloured as you get and I've troughed so much of it I sometimes wonder if I'll give birth to a giant cola bottle...

spina · 05/05/2009 22:56

I was a very smug first trimester-er back in 2003 with baby number one. all the right things, even oily fish till they changed the recommendations half way through my pg

2nd pg--think i lived on crisps. and chocolate(but not at same time cos that isSICK!)

Both kids gorgeous and healthy!

duzida · 06/05/2009 00:13

I finally managed to eat a small piece of tomato at 12 and a half weeks - I was so proud! but then as 2nd trimester went on I actually started wanting to eat fruit and veg again. Don't worry. The baby is supposed to steal everything it needs for its tiny tiny self in the first trimester - just catch up on slightly better stuff when your body can eat it. I reckoned that if I'd been able to force myself to eat healthy food when I felt so sick, I would have gone off it for the rest of the pregnancy, not just the first third. as it is, I just will never ever be able to eat macaroni cheese again, as that's all I could face cooking or eating.
