I'm a few weeks pregnant now, and have low levels of nausea all day, usually peakign around dinner time. I went to the chemist, and they wont give me anything without a prescription, and I'm not due to see the Dr till next week.. I have ginger biscuits, and eat toast etc when feeling bad, but what else should I do/eat to stop feeling so dire?

You could try eating little and often instead of proper meals
Lots of people find sparkling mineral water or tonic water helps

pambaby · 30/04/2009 08:52

fruits like guava and pears help me a lot. sparkling water works as well.

MrsHappy · 30/04/2009 09:12

I ate a lot of melon which helped.
Eat what you fancy when you fancy it.
I noticed that my nausea in the evenings was worst when I had not eaten for quite a long time, so little and often is good.
Sugary foods (biscuits especially!) seemed to make me feel dire.

cba · 30/04/2009 09:16

i had chronic nausea and bought some travel sickness wristbands, they really took the edge off the sickness.

theyoungvisiter · 30/04/2009 09:21

I ate constantly - water biscuits were really good.

Tonic water helped.

Also sour things like sorbet, grapefruit juice.

Don't wait until you are hungry, snack to keep your blood sugar levels constant, rather than letting them drop then eating a big meal.

Sickness bands helped me if I wore them constantly but sadly gave me some kind of carpal tunnel syndrome, do try them but take them off if you get severe hand/wrist pain!

MaLopez · 30/04/2009 09:22

Travel sickness wristbands worked well and then I had to take them off because they were too tight. Eat little and often. Can't stress that enough. Was advised every 2 hours. You might not feel like it but do try because by the time you really feel hungry, the nausea has already kicked in full blast. Does not have to be anything heavy. Fruit did the trick in between meals and I snack on bitesize shreddies

SweetPea99 · 30/04/2009 09:34

Yup, eat every 2 hours (I found carbs most effective - healthy foods like fruit unfortunately didn't give any respite for me) and try to get as much sleep and rest as possible. It probably isn't something that can be 'cured' by prescription, it's just about getting through the first 12 weeks, by which time it will (hopefully) ease up a bit. Good luck!

Have some biscuits by the bed, and eat one as soon as you wake up, b4 any feeling of sickness.
I found I felt sick about 15 minutes after I woke up, so if I rammed in a ginger snap sharpish, it seemed to stop the yucky feeling coming on so strongly.

And I found that walking round the garden to get some fresh air first thing in my nightie (watch out neighbours!) seemed to help.

Agree with MaLopez - you have to eat often even if its the last thing you feel like. The blood sugar levels seem to drop much more acutely when preggers. I always carry a muesli bar in my bag. Even keep those little wrapped biscuits you get free with coffee in coffee shops! Its just enough to keep you going and hopefully ward off the nausea.

The times I had the worst nausea were when I just lay in bed feeling crap.

Good luck and take care

MrsHappy · 30/04/2009 10:16

Oh yes, sour things are good. I drank a lot of fresh lemonade. Still do!
It does pass. I am now 15 weeks and feeling far better.

HannahCB · 30/04/2009 11:12

Ice lollies were about all I survived on until 16 weeks!

alana39 · 30/04/2009 11:15

Crackers with marmite, slice of cheddar and a strawberry or grape every 2 hours kept me going in my worst week. Obviously no good if you hate marmite!

dizzeelizzee · 30/04/2009 12:27

Definately try the acupressure bands.

Eat little and often.

Have a drink and biscuit by your bed so you can eat as soon as you wake up.

Remember, it will pass!

Good Luck!

Gillyan · 30/04/2009 13:29

Eat little and often even if you don't wnat to

Ice lollies were my godsend

Grapes

Pineapple

Cold Apple

Rich Tea biccies

It won't last forever ;)

Try chewing gum all the time - was my lifesaver.

Also refreshers sweets - the hard ones, not the chewy ones helped for some odd reason.

Even if you don't feel like eating anything try some of the ideas here - different things work for different people.

M78 · 30/04/2009 13:38

I really sympathise with you as I had the worst all day long nausea up to 11 weeks and it does get you down. I tried to rest as much as I could as been really tired made the nausea worse and I also tried to eat often even if I didn't feel like it. I had acupuncture at 11wks and 13 wks and that really made a difference, the nausea didn't go, but it became bearable, so I personally highly recommend it. I am now 19 wks and I feel much better. I can?t say the nausea has completely gone, but compared to what I felt like before this is nothing!

eidsvold · 01/05/2009 04:45

i found the minute my blood sugar dropped - my nausea was worse so I found some italian salted crackers and just snacked all day on those. They seemed to keep the edge off.

lavenderbongo · 01/05/2009 05:00

Worthers Originals - sucked them constantly for a few weeks.

seeker · 01/05/2009 06:20

Ginger tea was my saviour. Grated fresh ginger soaked in boiling water, then a spoonful or two of the liquid added to ordinary tea. It really helped.

JammyQueenOfTheSewers · 01/05/2009 06:27

It may well have just been me, but I found vinegar stopped the nausea. I ate SO many packs of S&V crisps it was unbelievable! I wondered for a bit if it was the salt, but then I walked past a chip shop and the vinegar small calmed the churning feeling instantly.

Broodzilla · 01/05/2009 12:30

I second (or fourth? ) the Seabands.
They're fantastic! I only take mine off when I have a shower and also while I sleep as I noticed that my hands swell up if I sleep with them on.

I think it's a case of you have to find what works for you - in my case, eating anything sweet makes me feel worse and I can't STAND ginger, just thinking about it makes me gag.
Granny Smith apples are fantastic though, and so is sparkling water. It's all I drink now.
I also eat bananas and natural yogurt.

I've also noticed that I feel worse when I'm tired, so nap whenever you can.

I can't stress how important it is to eat regularly though - I definitely need to eat every couple of hours, not because I'm hungry but because I feel rotten if I don't. On Sunday I stayed in bed to read the paper and by the time I got to the kitchen to have breakfast I passed out.

They do say it will pass. I'm 13+4 and still waiting...

McSnail · 01/05/2009 13:08

To be honest, with some people nothing helps. Sometimes you just have to wait it out. Unfortunately.

But it does go eventually.

LilRedWG · 01/05/2009 13:09

Crackers and cheese - little and often -helped me a little.

I don't want to make Luxmum feel worse - but one of the things I found hardest was people telling me it would pass - sorry to all those of you trying to be helpful and reassuring on here (and actually to all the RL people I snapped at while pregnant) but for some people it does NOT go away. For both my pregnancies I was nauseous from 4-5 weeks until after the birth. It just felt worse each time I would pass a milestone at which it was 'supposed' to get better and it didn't.

sparklycheerymummy · 07/05/2009 15:21

i was very sickly for a great chunk of my pegancy with my dd. am strugglinh this time because i work with children with special needs and some of the things i am dealing with adn quite challenging at the best of times..... feeding children liquidised lunches when you are at your worst is just plain hell. but someone told me today the babies born to mothers who have morning sicknes end up having highre IQ so there is hope!!!!!??? Or at least a possible positive at the end of the tunnel.
