Morning sickness or lack of ... a tell tale sign of gender?

mrswee · 28/04/2009 12:56

so how many of you believe in this thoery that if you have very little/no morning sickness then you are likely to be having a boy and if you you are very sick you are more likely to having a girl?

I only felt a little neuseaus for about 10 days and everyone I met says 'oh it must be a boy' plus all my friends who have had boys were not sick either.
Two of my friend's mums are midwives and they say the same....

my mum was sick everyday for 5 months with me!! poor woman oh how she suffered (48 hour labour, me 10bls 2 oz!! that's another story!)

what do you think?

I had no ms with dd and was sick the whole pregnancy with ds.

Seeline · 28/04/2009 13:00

I had very bad ms with DS - confiend to the house for the first 16-18 weeks. It began again with DD - but I demanded drugs! I was still sick several times though. No gender relationship at all IMO

Blackduck · 28/04/2009 13:01

friend fine with first - ds
sick as a dog with second - ds

no relationship imo

suwoo · 28/04/2009 13:02

That old wives tale was/is certainly true for my three pregnancies.

iwouldgoouttonight · 28/04/2009 13:02

I didn't feel sick at all with DS and did feel a bit nauseous on and off with DD but it only lasted a few weeks. So its kind of true with me. But if DD had been my first child, because I only felt a bit sick, I'd have thought she was a boy. So I think some people are just lucky not to feel very sick either way! My mum didn't any morning sickness at all and we were both girls!

xfabba · 28/04/2009 13:03

I dont think so - i had 2 boys, one no ms and one moderate ms - both pg were very different.

Lizzylou · 28/04/2009 13:04

Not in my case, was fine with DS1 and had a lot of nausea with DS2.

My Mom sounds like yours, she was sick for 5/6 mths with me and longer with my brother, she ended up hopitalised on a drip (she does mention it from time to time )

Picante · 28/04/2009 13:05

True for me. Mild ms til 17 weeks with ds. Still feeling sick at 24 weeks with future dd!

mrswee · 28/04/2009 13:09

Well all my friends are going to get a big shock now if it's a girl! they are all convinced... I'm trying not to let there confidence convince me or I'll get a shock too!

I think I have been very lucky not getting MS, I felt ropey yes but it could have been a lot worse!

nothing in in IME
ds1 nausea but no actual vomiting
similar for ds 2 and 3 then
ds4 TERRIBLE nausea, so bad I felt like crawling about on my knees sometimes, so hard to cope with it and the only thing that helped was sucking on lemons. It was much MUCH worse than the previous morning sickness experiences and was convinced maybe having girl that time...but, no - another lovely chap!

Oh I was sick as a dog with DS1 but not at all with DS2.

I think the timing of the conception thing has something in it though - you know, sex on ovulation day = boy, before = girl.

I "knew" my DS2 was a boy because of when he was conceived.

bluebump · 28/04/2009 13:14

Well I was sick all day long for weeks with my first DS, and not remotely sick with my second DS so I don't believe it!

I do however believe the one about having heartburn meaning it is the baby growing hair as I only had heartburn once and even at nearly 9 months, DS is very bald!!

audreyraines · 28/04/2009 13:14

i was fine with ds, just a few things smelled funny, but never vomited.

with dd (to be) i was always vomiting/retching/losing weight for the first 18 weeks. twas hell. i still vomit once a day now, but that is very manageable in comparison.

so i am a typical old wives tale.

Mistymoo · 28/04/2009 13:16

Sick within a day of conception with ds and carried on being sick for 5 months. SLight morning sickenss with dd but not a lot.

Def not a sign of gender according to all your responses!

jafina · 28/04/2009 13:18

no diff in ms but had terrible skin and greasy hair with dd in first trimester and beautiful glowing skin and hair with ds's. This fits with the old "girls steal your beauty" theory .

KingRolo · 28/04/2009 13:19

Only very mild nausea with DD. I think it's just a myth tbh.

The hair and heartburn thing is interesting. I had killer heartburn and had a very hairy baby

YanknCock · 28/04/2009 13:31

I heard the myth the other way around (boys=sick).

I'm just getting over MS at 23 weeks, and I'm having a boy. A few people said 'only a boy could make you this sick!'

Two other friends with boys were also horribly sick.

Think its all bollocks, nothing to do with gender.

MmeLindt · 28/04/2009 13:32

I was sick as a dog with both DD and DS so, no I don't think it is a reliable sign.

shellmc · 28/04/2009 16:43

Just to add to this topic, i have suffered tru my pregnancy with sickness i was being sik 4 ays before i evan got a positive result!!! And it carryed on up till 18 weeks i lost weight and struggled eating anything i was soo relieved when i had my scans to see how big baby was and to see he/she was okay!! i honestly thort i cudnt have been eating enuf for baby to develop, anyhow my sickness stopped for a wee while then hit back at 24 weeks and iv had it on and off right up till now im now 36+ weeks everyone assumes im having a girl- but only time will tell, once baby is ere i will post and let u know!!!

Luv Shell xxx

buggylovinmummy · 28/04/2009 16:50

Opposite for me, i had no sickness just occasional nausea with dd but terrible morning sickness with ds.

crokky · 28/04/2009 16:51

I had terrible hyperemesis with both DS and DD. I would say that with DD, the sickness was slightly worse - although once you are that bad, it doesn't make much difference!

hedgiemum · 28/04/2009 16:55

I had hyperemesis with DD1 (aprox 5 admissions for rehydration), VERY bad hyperemesis with DS1 (aprox 20 admissions for rehydration!), hyperemesis (aprox 5 admissions again) with DD2 so when I got pg again and I'd made it to 20 weeks with no admissions, we assumed it must be another girl! Oh no - its a boy! So I think the whole thing is a lot more complicated than the gender of the baby.

Trikken · 28/04/2009 16:59

with ds I had hypermesis and rehydration too, this one bad morning sickness but not as bad as with ds, dont think it can be true.

notsoteenagemum · 28/04/2009 17:05

I had terrible sickness with dd and none with ds, however my friend had the opposite so no help there.
