ok i have recently found out that i am pregnant . I weigh alot ,13 stone 12, and i have been sort of dieting for a while . I would like to continue ,no more than 2lbs a week and more like 1lb a week loss if possible ,just for a few more months till i get to 12 stone something ,would stop in 3rd trimester and try to maintain weight but will accept gain as normal . Can i just add that what i eat to lose weight ,is probably what most size ten people eat normally eg toast with marmite or all bran and banana for breakfast ,salad with tuna or ham for lunch and then chicken or fish with veggies or pasta for tea . what do you all think honestly

I think both WW and SW have weight loss programmes for pregnant women so may be better to check them out.

MrsMattie · 27/04/2009 11:10

I do think it is madness to try to lose weight when pregnant. eating a healthy diet and trying not to put on excessive amounts is the best way forward, imo.

chuggy · 27/04/2009 11:10

I wouldnt say mad, no. I think what you describe seems like a healthy diet. Be careful though and don't start "dieting" as such, i.e. don't worry at all about what the scales say. This is not the time to start monitoring weight in the hope that it goes down....

bumpsoon · 27/04/2009 11:11

i have been following ww on my own ,but they no longer allow pregnant women to participate ,probably due to the possibility of litigation

i will have a chat with the midwife when i book in and see what she says , it would be nice to lose a stone ,but i also appreciate that it might not be easy and i might have to go with the not putting on excessive weight

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during this pregnancy so had to completely change my diet. As a result, I have probably lost weight or at least minimised the amount of weight I would have put on. I also kept up sensible levels of exercise.

Personally, I wouldn't diet as such but continue to eat healthily and sensibly and exercise safely. You'll minimise weight gain and also reduce the risk of getting gestational diabetes.

Beccabump · 27/04/2009 11:14

I would honestly not even consider trying to lose weight when pg. You really need all the calories you should be taking in (2000) as well as the nutrients ect.

I would say you'd be better off maintaining a healthy diet as you described above (maybe a little more carb at luch to keep the energy up) and thinking about how you can diet healthily after the pregnancy!

You may also find you lose some weight initially depending on morning sickness etc but it is not a nice way to be losing weight.

You will be getting heavier through the pregnancy and if you are depriving yourself initially, the baby just takes from you anyway leaving you feeling awful.

Can you get advice from your mw?

Also, you say you'd accept weight gain in the 3rd trimester, but you tend to put it on in the 2md trimester as baby grows rapidly.

I am in no way a health professional, this is just my view as you asked for

Hope you have a lovely pregnancy xxx

KingCanuteIAm · 27/04/2009 11:15

I would suggest that you forget about dieting whilst you are pg. Instead get some proper advice on portion sizes ad a good balanced healthy diet for a pg lady. Step up your excercise a bit (a bit at a time) - my personal top tip is to borrow a dog, it is amasing how little you notice the fact that you are walking extra miles a day when youhav a dog! Doing something like this means you will probably find you lose weight as a result of a better approach IYSWIM without having to deny yourslef too much.

warthog · 27/04/2009 11:15

i think what you want to do isn't a diet as such, but rather eating healthily.

they've found that following a diet during pregnancy does impact negatively on the baby, so i wouldn't do that. but cutting out junk food and eating good food is great! good for you and good for baby. but don't starve yourself, don't miss any meals, and don't follow any fad diets.

Disenchanted3 · 27/04/2009 11:15

If i were you i would aim to maintain weight and nothing more.

You have to accept you WILL gain weigh from the baby, placenta and waters, it will be impossible not to.

Eat properly, enjoy your pregbnancy and worry about your weight when baby is 6 months old.

RaspberryBlower · 27/04/2009 11:16

I really think you should just eat a healthy diet and try not to go on the cream cake diet like I did when I was pregnant. You can lose weight afterwards, and if you breastfeed you might lose weight naturally anyway.

Effielou · 27/04/2009 11:17

I agree with MrsMatty your diet already sounds healthy so stick to healthy eating rather than calorie counting!! I would also and seriously get advice from mw/gp and follow what they say. Try and enjoy your pregnancy and avoid the high n fat foods-- ie cream cakes etc!!! But do check with the midwife xx good luck!!!

KingCanuteIAm · 27/04/2009 11:19

Bumpsoon, please do not focus on loosing a certain amount of weight. People put on weight through being pg at different times, some people gain early then even out, others gain at the end. As you have no way to identify what is baby weight and what is pre pg weight it will be almost impossible to work out if you are gaining or losing and if that is correct or not. Eating a healthy diet, watching portion size and excercising are sensible things to do in pg anyway. Hopefully, after you have had your baby, you should find that the extra effort has paid off and you have much less to lose post pg than you did pre pg IYSWIM.

bumpsoon · 27/04/2009 11:20

i have a dog already !! so i am actually quite active in that sense ,the only sitting on my arse i do is when i am on here ! I also have a horse so you can add picking up large quantities of poo to my exercise regime too. I used to drink very large quantities of wine which i have obviousley stopped completely ,so perhaps without those extra calories and healthy eating ,i might be ok anyway .Portion sizes really are my main problem ,but i always thought it was normal to build a wall useing your potaoes/chips etc so you could fill the middle of your plate higher

bumpsoon is right, ww don't let you continue when you get pg. They used to let you until you got to 12 weeks, but not even that any more. Having said that, if and when I try for no.2 I'm going to keep going until 12 weeks and just not tell them . As ww isn't really a diet as such, more a healthy 'lifestyle choice'. If I were you, I'd keep eating what you're eating, just increase amounts a wee bit to take baby into account. It's not like you're talking about suddenly starting Atkins or the cabbage soup diet, is it?

Songbird · 27/04/2009 11:23

Oh, and 13st 12 isn't that big. I'm heavier than that and a size 16 which is bigger than I want to be, but not that big either

Songbird · 27/04/2009 11:25

lol at chip wall! You'll fine that cutting out booze will make a huge difference to be honest. Since starting ww I hardly ever drink, as it's just empty calories. Yummy happy calories, but empty

jennylindinha · 27/04/2009 11:26

I agree with the others, try and eat a healthy diet and don't think about losing the weight. I was slightly overweight when I got pregnant but then when the morning sickness kicked in I found it hard to eat certain foods and I ended up losing half a stone!

Also, try and exercise. I was already cycling to work every day up so I carried on doing that until a week or two before I went on maternity leave (I was around 36 weeks and still on the bike) and I am convinced that is what helped me to have a fairly quick birth! But obviously don't take up anything too hard going if you are not used to it.

Watch out afterwards though, I've put weight on since giving birth - think I'd better stop using breastfeeding as an excuse to stuff in the cakes

Congratulations by the way

lauraloo09 · 27/04/2009 11:27

bumpsoon I was 13 1/2 stone when i fell pregnant in September. I haven't been dieting as such but I have been keeping a close eye on what I eat and the amount of fat and saturated fat i eat daily. I am now 32 1/2 weeks and I have only put on 1 stone so far which I think is great. I would prefer to have out on less but when you hear of people putting on 4 stone 1 stone doesn't seem that much. I have ensured i continue with light exercise did karate practice till i was 20 weeks and i attend aqua-natal every Tuesday. I would recommend going to aqua-natal once you are over 16 weeks.

bumpsoon · 27/04/2009 11:35

thanks for the 'not that big' comment songbird!
i think i will continue with ww until 12 weeks and then go with trying not to put on ridiculous amounts , i am quite happy that i am now only overweight on the bmi instead of obese

Sounds like you are probably doing ok on the excercise front then! Watch yorself when mucking out later in pg, at some point you will find various ligaments soften up to allow your changing shape. At this stage bending, twisting, lifting and swinging (as you do with a fork when poo-picking etc) can make you very vunerable to pulling things that should not be pulled! IMO don't stop, just watch your posture and listen to your body - don't ignore those little twinges!

bumpsoon · 27/04/2009 12:00

i have one of those pooper scoopers so its not too bad ,plus the horse tends to do those nice pellet poos as opposed to the big sloppy ones ,TMI

I'm in the same boat! I'm in the obese category (12.6 stone..but I'm short!) apparently for tubby mommas it's actually recommended to lose weight or at the very least not gain any. So long as you are eating super healthy, WW should be fine, don't they have a plan for preggie women?
Here are some articles

www.webmd.com/baby /news/20070614/can-pregnancy-loss-be-good

I'm eating super healthy, lots of veggies but no more naughty treats and takeaways! I meant to lose these pounds before I got pregnant but caught alot quicker than I expected :D
May I just note that it's only fine if you are in the obese category and not if you are a healthy weight..you guys need to gain the recommended amount!

schneebly · 03/05/2009 14:53

I was 16 stones 2lb when I fell pregnant with DS1 and although I did not try to diet I made a conscious effort to eat as healthily as I could for the baby but I was cetainly for the most part taking in the right amount of calories. The day I went into labour I weighed 16 stones and 2 weeks after the birth I was 14 stones.

This was not deliberate but very welcome - DS1 was a healthy 8lb 1oz.

I must stress that I was not dieting but eating much healthier than I previously had been because I was not just nourishing myself but also my baby.
