My scan - will I know in 1 week if baby has grown and therefore it's alive and everything is okay, or not?

Hiya

You may or may not know that I had a scan on Monday afternoon, the 25th April.

I thought I was 10 weeks pregnant going from the dates I have.

However I'm either only 5 weeks pregant, or, I am 10 weeks pregnant but the baby hasn't done anything for 5 weeks .

The woman scanning me at the private hospital i went to said the only way to know was to scan me again in 2 weeks and see if the baby had grown or not.

Meanwhile the NHS scan appointment that was made for me through my GP has come up and it's for next Tuesday, 3rd May.

That's only just over a week though.

So will there be a difference? Will I / they know if the baby has grown or not?

Is it worth me having a scan only 1 week later?

I badly, badly want to know what is going on but if the results are inconclusive again and I've sneaked time off work, D has taken time off, just to be told it's still to early to know if the baby is growing or not.....

Will there be a difference in the size from Monday 25th Aporil - Tuesday 3rd May?

Thomcat, please get to the Docters. The low ache could be nothing but if it starts coming in waves and affects your back then its not good.

I really want to be posotive for you but i only had sore boobs too nothing else. The only way you are going to know for sure is to go to the epu clinic. Your doctor or midwife will send you straight there.

Good luck, fingers crossed for you. xxxx

Thomcat · 27/04/2005 12:13

It's not coming in waves and it's not affecting my back.
I can't go to the doctors today, i'm at work and have 2 client meetings and am on my own.
I'm fine, it's a dull ache that's barely there, sometimes it feels tight, other times it feels a bit like a stitch, right now it's just a tiny tiny dull ache.

Just rubbed my bood with flat of palm, over bra and top from armpit to nipple and it really hurt, both boobs.

Nipples don't feel as sore today though.

Oh God. I'm going to stop dpoing this to myself.

I'll go for the scan next tueday, I'll make sure we have the measurements from the 1st scan and that's it.

if I do another prgnancy test today it won't tell me anything will it?
no, scrap that idea.

Oh honey honey honey.

Don't blame yourself for snapping - please, please don't.

I can see your temptation to test again, actually.

elliott · 27/04/2005 12:28

I'm probably just repeating everything but yes, go for the scan. Try to get a copy of the private scan report to take with you to the appt (don't rely on it being sent - the NHS won't know anything about the first scan unless you tell them). Phone up first and ask whether they will ahve the equipment available for an internal scan (transvaginal rather than transabdominal). For a transvaginal scan you don't need a full bladder. Remember that being scanned by different people in a different way can give different results - i.e. the measurements won't necessarily be strictly comparable.
I would also slightly caution about being able to see a heartbeat at 6 weeks - sometimes you can, but sometimes not, so if it is not there it doesn't mean disaster. So in that respect a 7 week scan would be more definitive.

bundle · 27/04/2005 12:32

agree measurements can vary - that's why they write down which machine they scanned you with, as they're all calibrated slightly differently - but you should get a heartbeat at 6 weeks as hoxtonchick says. good luck, x

Hi TC, If you look at an old post of mine (last entry) I've previously linked to the sonographer's training manual for accreditation for the 11 week scanning / nuchal fold test from the Fetal Medicine Centre. IIRC it has tables of fetus size by gestational age, and it may well contain additional info which you find interesting / helpful.

Thinking of you.

shhhh · 27/04/2005 12:47

TC, due to previous prob's dh & I were scanned every 2 weeks. There certainly was a difference in baby during these 2 weeks. I presume that there will still be a difference in baby even if it's only 7-10 days since last scanned. Like others have said you will be able to see the heartbeat which is very reasurring.
Hope it goes well.

Ellbell · 27/04/2005 13:33

Just wanted to say good luck Thomcat. The dull ache sounds very familiar to me from both my pgs. Felt like I was just about to come on, but I never did. Thinking of you and hoping all is well.

TC, best of luck with this. I am glad you are going ahead with the scan. I so hope it is good news XXX

northerner · 27/04/2005 13:41

Oh TC I've just seen this hun. XXX
Really hope this all works out for you all. Fingers crossed and lots of hugs.

zippy539 · 27/04/2005 14:08

Just want to echo what Ellbell said about the stomach ache - with both ds and dd I had period-like pains at around 5/6 weeks, felt like period was always about to start, also slight stretching pains. Thinking of you.

Gizmo · 27/04/2005 14:22

Fingers crossed for you Thomcat - I really hope you get the result you want.

Good luck TC - and maybe 'the bitch from hell' business is hormonal which is good, yes? Plus stress too, so I think you can excuse yourself being snappy.

aloha · 27/04/2005 14:29

I had an internal scan at six weeks after bleeding and there was a little bean with a heartbeat. Internal scans are MUCH better at this stage. Talk to the scanning dept where you have your appointment and ask if you can have one in the EPU - I just turned up for mine.
Good luck. Scans can cause a lot of needless worry. I really doubt that if your pregnancy had ended five weeks ago you would still see a positive pg test.

Thomcat · 27/04/2005 15:14

Oh girtls, you've all made me feel a bit better. Will phone the hospital again on my way to meeting and request the internal examination.

It will be so worth it if it puts your mind at rest, TC, but internal scans can be a little, ahem, uncomfortable, especially if the person doing them lacks finesse
Just a warning. Really rooting for you on this

hunkermunker · 27/04/2005 15:31

I had an internal scan with DS at 6+6 - strong heartbeat flashing away. I'm sure we'd have seen it earlier, it was SO bright, iyswim.

Internal scans aren't something I'd choose to have every day, but I've had four (follicle tracking before I got pg) and they're no big deal.

I have everything crossed for you, TC. Don't expect to be emotionally "even" at the moment and don't beat yourself up if you're not.

Lots of love xxxxxx

cp3 · 27/04/2005 17:46

Hiya Thomcat. Any joy, did you manage a re appointment. I wouldnt test again, it will come up posotive and so would be a waste of money. Hows your ache, hopefully its just ligament stretching.

SleepyJess · 27/04/2005 17:57

That ache soundslike a normal early pregnancy ache IMHO. I have felt it three times.. except with the pregnancy I miscarried. I didn't have that sensation at all then.. until I developed period-type pains before I miscarried.

I think the pain you are describing fits with the sensation of a uterus stretching in early pg. Obviously I can't be sure but I'm not just saying this to make you feel better.

((Thinking of you lots.))

Enid · 27/04/2005 17:58

TC I had a pain like this while pg with dd2 (had previously had m/c) - was convinced it meant the end was nigh..it was nothing and the baby was fine, dr said it was probably everything stretching and loosening (I was about 7 wks pg)

rodeo1 · 27/04/2005 19:50

The dull ache sounds familiar to me too TC, I had them in each successful pg from about 5-8 weeks. Could it be possible you are 5 weeks, I mean did you do the deed approx 3-4 weeks ago?

I wouldn't give up hope just yet, go for the internal scan on Tues. I'm keeping everything crossed for you x x x

Cyndii · 28/04/2005 09:58

still praying for you tc! keep the chin up!
