Hi,

I am 5.5 months pregnant and suffering badly from tinnitus. Are there any other ladies out there suffering? I would love to hear from you so we could compare notes. Thanks, Mary

I had it. It started when I was 5 months pregnant and went straight after the birth. Mine wasn't a ringing, it sounded like I could hear the blood pumping around my body more of a whooshing sound. I did eventually get used to it. Until I had it I had no idea that it was something that could come on in pregnancy.

3littlefrogs · 14/04/2009 10:24

This could well be due to anaemia. Have you had your Hb checked recently?

DawnAS · 14/04/2009 11:03

I'm so glad I'm not the only one...

One of my first PG symptoms was nasal congestion. This has led to blocked sinuses which in turn has led to permanent ringing/heartbeat noises in my ear. In fact last week I thought we had a bird in our bedroom - tweeting - I then realised the noise was coming from my ears!!

I have had my blood checked recently and there was no problem with anaemia and I occasionally get the ringing in my ears when my sinuses are blocked through a really bad cold. So I'm sure it's that...

Sounds like none of us are going mad then...

island72 · 14/04/2009 11:11

ForeverOptiistic - was your noise loud and did it really bother you or was it more of an irritation? Mine is driving me nuts but I am encouraged by the fact it went after you had given birth. My blood results have all come back as fine. I have no choice but to just live with it and get on with it - I have 15 weeks of pregnancy left so I think it could be a struggle to get through these. Regards, Mary

DawnAS - How long has yours been going on for and is it loud? I notice yours will be a July baby like mine! Regards, Mary

island72 - when it first started it was loud and really bothered me but as the pregnancy progressed I'm not sure whether it quietened down or if I just got used to it.

My sister works in an Audiology department and she mentioned it to them, they said that it was quite rare but they do see women from time to time with tinnitus brought on by pregnancy they said that it also wasn't unheard of for women to go completely deaf when pregnant.

DawnAS · 14/04/2009 19:58

Hi Island72,

My little girl is actually due in 8 weeks - early June so a little earlier than yours... Exciting though as she is our first (and possibly our last with all the problems we've had with this PG...).

I've had the congestion since about 8 weeks, but the noises in my ears since about 18 weeks. It's not so loud though that I can't hear, although it obviously feels like that a night when there's no other noises. Sometimes I wake up and it's really loud, other times I don't notice it at all, so it does sound like yours is a lot worse and a complete nightmare!!

There are so many bizarre PG symptoms that I didn't even know existed!! Hope it doesn't get you down too much...

xxx

MamaBrigette · 12/05/2009 14:42

HI MUMS,

I had the wooshing sound before pregnancy and I have had it all during pregnancy. I am in my 34th week and the noice is so loud I cannot hear out of my left ear.

I thought it may have gotten louder because of th daily weight gain? Not sure. I have not had anything tested, just living with the loud heartbeat/swooshing noise and hoping it will go away when the babe arrives in 6 weeks....or at least be replaced by the babies cries!!

Good luck ladies,

Brigette

island72 · 14/06/2009 14:39

DawnAS and MamaBrigitte - Just wondering on how your tinnitus is faring now? I am now 34 weeks pregnant and it is loud and electrical and seems to be getting more challenging as the pregnancy progressses. Sometimes it is coupled with a real fullness of ear sensation that I feel is claiming my whole head in a frenzy. My hospital consultant has agreed to induce me at 37 because of the tinnitus so less than 3 weeks to go. I pray that this will go when the baby comes or at least calm down and make it more livable with.

News of any other experiences from any other pregnant ladies would be welcome too. If you want to mail me directly I am at [email protected]

Hi, I'm really interested to see this thread, I'm 27 weeks and woke up this morning with really weird ears. When I speak it rings like as if I'm stood with a microphone too close to the speaker. It's a really odd sensation, I could barely have a phone call as my voice and that of the person I was talking to were both ringing. I've never experienced it any of my previous pregnancies, is it ever indicative of anything more sinister or is it just one of those pregnancy things?

I'm 35 weeks pregnant and have had a blocked ear for 7 weeks now. this gives me the feeling of a strange full ear which won't pop and a ringing noise. initially it drove me bananas but i think i'm getting more used to it. went to see an ent specialist and he thinks it's blocked eustacian tubes which can be caused by general snottiness and colds. i do find i get quite snotty when pregnant so am hoping it clears after delivery, if not before. the pollen count has been really high for the last month too so maybe that isn't helping. he told me to keep my easr dry (stopped swimming and put ear plugs when i have a shower), which i think helps a little. just thought i'd share this with fellow ear sufferers.

island72 · 01/07/2009 15:56

Garibaldigirl - if your eustachian tubes are blocked is there nothing an ENT specialist can do to alleviate that in pregnancy? I also have articles showing a correlation of fullness of ear and tinnitus with pregnancy. Mainstream GPs and even ENTs do not know this stuff unfortunately as I have had to dig into specialist medical journals for this information. If you want to read get in touch with me on [email protected] and I will happily share. I think that there are many ear complaints which pregnancy ladies have, which will hopefully resolve or at least be alleviated upon delivery. Regards, Mary.

Hey island72,
how is your tinnitus now-2 years later? I am 2.5 months pregnant and have also "ringing ears" .Is your Tinnitus gone after pregnancy?
Regards,Ralka

PositiveOutlook · 16/02/2012 21:10

Hi ralka, I would love to find out if the ringing in others stopped. I am 16 weeks and have had constant ringing in my right ear for 2 days and it is driving me crazy, I even turned all of the power off in the house last night to prove that it was me and not something electrical. How is yours going? Have you spoken to your midwife about it?

RosyRosie · 21/03/2012 13:50

sorry for the thread necromancy but good to hear I'm not the only one with ringing ears. It's only just started in the last few days for me (39+4) and it sounds like a ringy echo when I talk or someone with a higher pitched/female voice talks, or if I yawn etc. As I have been a bit stuffed up and was diagnosed with 'narrow ear canals' a few years ago, I think it could be the blocked tube thing....hope it goes after birth! I wanted to bring the thread back for a bit of solidarity with others sufferers!

kissyfur · 26/03/2012 21:14

Hi there, I'm only 6 weeks and ears have been ringing since before I found out I was pg (at about 4 wks) :( its quite hard to live with isn't it! Definitely up for a bit of solidarity! I've got hypothyroidism which came on when my DD was about 4 months, and only other time I've had ringing ears like this is just before I was diagnosed with that. My consultant says its not related but it seems a bit of a coincidence to me! Hope your ears sort themselves out v soon!

igggi · 26/03/2012 23:22

Hi, I'm about 31 weeks and have had this ringing, on and off, for months now. Following a cold a few weeks ago my ears feel blocked and I notice I'm turning the tv volume right up.
It's certainly not the worst side affect of pg I'm having (I have a long list!) but I could well do without it! Haven't mentioned it to GP or midwife.

ralka · 20/05/2012 20:13

Hey Girls!
I'm about 39 weeks now and still have the noises in my ears...Sometimes they are really loud, sometimes i don't notice them at all...but they are allways there and driving me nuts...so i'm hoping that clears after delivery, or at least calm down and make it more livable with. And how is yours going? Better?
Regards,
ralka

Hi guys

jonknightassociates · 28/01/2015 13:29

Just wanted to know if the ringing / fullness in ear went away when any of you ladies gave birth.

Number3cometome · 28/01/2015 16:35

I am so glad you ladies are here!! I thought I was going mad.

Mine is really bad in the middle of the night, sometimes a really high pitched noise, other times a wavering noice. I can hear my heartbeat in my ears too.

It was really worrying me as I kept thinking what if it gets louder?

It seems to come on suddenly and then go quieter to a hum, but stays?

So annoying.

Number3cometome · 28/01/2015 16:35

I'm 15+3

amy166 · 29/01/2015 14:44

Hi Number3cometome

I am.suffering with tinnitus have been since 28 weeks it was first in my right ear then 6 weeks later the other joined in. Both ears have different tones. One is audible all the time the other mostly at night. It is ruining my pregnancy. Ent seems to think it's because of the extra blood in my body or a tmj dis order - problem with my jaw. Either way it came in pregnancy and I to hope it goes or at least lessens after birth. Hope yours settles down hugs xx

Number3cometome · 29/01/2015 14:47

Oh my gosh, I have a clicky jaw thing that keeps going on.

My left ear is louder, and that's the side I need to sleep on.

I didn't even connect it to the jaw issue!!

Thanks Amy, I really hope it settles down as it makes me very anxious and that gives me braxton hicks, which can't be good! xx
