Am undecided whether to use mattress used for previous 2 DC's for no.3.Does everybody else buy new one for each new baby? Also is it worth paying extra for spring. The foam are so much cheaper.
My last little boy has a flat head one side would this mould the mattress in any way it is a spring one cost £80 4 years ago.

i'm buying a new one...figured new baby wouldnt ben getting much 'new'!

Wheelybug · 16/02/2009 14:54

We're getting a new one. Kept the old one as didn't plan to but number 2 took a lot longer to come along than we'd planned and we had a lot of building work done on our house so we're a bit concerned the mattress is a bit full of dust.

abermum · 16/02/2009 14:55

get a new foam one if its a cot- not worth getting sprung as they aren't in it a great ammount of time- sprung for a cotbed.

CaptainKarvol · 16/02/2009 15:06

got a new one for the moses basket - the old had been up in the loft, so horrendously dusty.

Won't bother for the cotbed though. The original (sprung) one is likely to be fine (provided DS doesn't take up bouncing on his own bed like he does mummy and daddys...

SOLOveMeTenderLoveMeDo · 16/02/2009 15:13

Nope! My Ds's mattress was third hand(from friends)and he's fine at age 10 now and he slept on his tummy. Dd's was a new foam one as the second hand cot didn't come with one. If it had and was clean, I wouldn't have bought a new one as again a friend gave it to me, so if I was putting any subsequent babies of my own into/onto it I would not replace it. I reckon there's a lot of money being made and lets face it, they have got to be as safe over the last 10 years as they are probably ever going to be so why waste money you don't have to...just my opinion mind.

MiaMamma · 16/02/2009 16:47

No.

littleducks · 16/02/2009 16:58

i did, just bought the cheapest foam ones both times

isnt it something to do with spores in the mattress from milk sick though, rather than actual visible wear, that is the reason for recommending a new one? I will be getting both a new moses one and a new cotbed one, just foam ones, as dd was sick on both at least once and I wouldn't want anything to be lurking!

Carrie06 · 16/02/2009 18:09

I think the reason for buying a new one is related to bacteria that you won't be able to see and is a threat to the baby. FSIDs recommend a new mattress for every baby regardless of whether it was used by your own baby or an unknown one. I have bought a crib and moses basket from ebay but new mattresses for both - couldn't really understand why people were offering to include their used mattresses. Cx

soon2befamilyof4 · 16/02/2009 18:09

I would get a new one if it has been used much. We are expecting DD2 soon and won't bother getting a new moses basket matress as it was hardly used as DD spent most of the night in our bed and in the day she had her carrycot. By about 2-3 months old she was already too active for the moses basket so went into her cotbed. And it is a wipeable matress anyway and has been in our wardrobe. If we had a longer age gap we probably would get a new one though (DD is only 1).

Cotbed we are getting a new one but DD is still using hers and will be for years so not sure I can really comment much on that as we didn't really have that decision to make..

EverSOLOlolololoLonely · 16/02/2009 18:09

Doesn't it have a thick, removable and washable cover on it? Mine has and it definitely stopped vomit from going through to the foam recently. It washes at 60 degrees too so any spores or bacteria would be washed out.

needsomesleepplease · 16/02/2009 21:13

I have bought new mattersses for the carycot and the cotbed - new baby wont be getting much new anyway. I got them from John Lewis much cheaper than M&P's

babypringle · 19/02/2009 15:41

I'm buying a new mattress for the crib and cotbed - but have no idea whether I should replace the mattress pad in the Quinny Dreami carrycot. DS1 slept in it for a few weeks when he was v small and wouldn't settle in the crib, and I also left him to sleep in there during the day. Do you think I should replace it??

Nabster · 19/02/2009 15:43

New mattress for pram and cot for each child.

Buy the best you can afford.

Your baby having a flat head is probably nothing to do with the mattress.

If it is 4 years old, where has it been stored?

BabyBaby123 · 19/02/2009 16:48

I bought a new mattress for all 3 of my babies - I wouldn't be able to live with myself if something happened and I knew I'd scrimped on that one vital piece of equipment. (you need to buy a new mattress for moses basket too....)

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2009 16:58

Was planning to for the cot, but wasn't going to for the moses basket - he was only in it for a few weeks!
Cot has been vomited on (not just lovely milky baby sick) and despite having a cover and a sheet obviously it still went through to the foam. Have dettoled it and it's fine but want new baby to have a brand new one.
Will look into the moses basket one, thanks. I bet I can't find one

StealthPolarBear · 19/02/2009 16:59

Don't think my pram has a removable mattress?

lalalonglegs · 19/02/2009 16:59

Not a biologist but how long could vomit spores survive and surely they would be a risk to current baby as well as subsequent ones?

All three of mine had reflux and I didn't even realise you were meant to change the mattress each time.

BabyBaby123 · 19/02/2009 17:11

there's loads of places you can buy moses basket mattresses - kiddicare, ebay, mothercare - you should be able to get for about £20 - I paid £25 for a good quality one in Mothercare

Carrie06 · 19/02/2009 17:16

Paid about £14 for a moses basket mattress in M&P - they are very cheap! Cx

aquababe · 19/02/2009 17:25

£40/80 for peace of mind!

thumbwitch · 19/02/2009 17:36

I won't be - I bought a neurosis-driven organic cocofibre sprung mattress; it has never been soiled as the mattress cover has always protected it (and DS was rarely sick anyway) and I am happy to use it again.
