Do many of you have the odd glass of wine in pregnancy?

Am v tempted tonight. DH cooking nice meal - I have had a bit of a week and really fancy just a small glass of wine.

Normally I don't touch a drop when I am pregnant and have lost track of what the recomendations are.

Do you think 1 glass would hurt?

A glass is absolutely fine. Whether you look at govt advice, or just think about what women have always done (eg common sense) it's fine.

Just make sure it's a great wine - a rioja maybe!

WelliesAndPyjamas · 21/01/2009 20:04

1 glass would not hurt. I don't believe that the official guidelines complteley ban alcohol. I've had a glass every so often (Christmas, birthdays) during this preg and it's nice for the taste but tbh I've always found it difficult to finish the glass.

If you fancy it, go for it.

jumpyjan · 21/01/2009 20:07

I do really fancy it - and it would go very nicely with my dins!

i have half a glass every now and then

Winehouse · 21/01/2009 20:09

I used to dilute one glass with mineral water, so it lasted ages and still felt like a grown-up's drink. I am fond of a glass of wine (perhaps that's why I chose my name lol)

ProfRichardDawkins · 21/01/2009 20:09

I didn't drink at all during my last two pregnancies because I was confused by the mixed messages. I thought better to be cautious than full of regret.

WelliesAndPyjamas · 21/01/2009 20:10

then drink it

also, if it relaxes you after a tough week, that is most definitely good for baby (says Dr Wellies )

watch out for heartburn though

Hawkmoth · 21/01/2009 20:10

They say two units a couple of times a week is ok. Also read that women who drink the odd glass of wine now and again have healthier babies... they probably didn't take into account social factors there!

Anyway, as soon as I can stomach it, I'll be having a pint of bitter every Monday night. And what about those women who drink a pint of Guinness every night???

I had two sips of beer on Saturday and ten seconds later felt like I'd drunk bleach. Instant heartburn... not what I signed up for!

Reallytired · 21/01/2009 20:10

I drank a small amount of wine when I was pregnant with my son as the recommendations were not so strict then. Yet he has somehow escaped fetal alochol syndrome.

Thirty years ago my mother was instructed to drink a pint of Guiness a day. She did this dutifully although she abolutely hated it. I don't think there is any evidence that people born in the 1970s have been damaged by this crazy recommendation.

With this pregnancy I do drink a small amount, but its a treat and I never drink enough that would put me over the drink drving limit.

camgirl · 21/01/2009 20:11

I certainly have a glass every now and again with no problems - except that I often don't manage to finish it! I tend to believe in treating these guidelines with a good dose of common sense.

Chrysanthamum · 21/01/2009 20:28

I have the odd glass of red and the odd glass of guiness. With 1st pregnancy my dr said 3 units a week was ok. 2nd time around everyone said zero alcohol is best, now its changed again. I'd hate to give the wrong advice but a glass can be relaxing now and then

NormaJeanBaker · 21/01/2009 20:32

A glass every now and then is fine. White wine gave me heartburn but red was fine. A friend who lives in Spain says her docs are amazed anyone should advise against it - in moderation obviously. Now - bring on the smelly cheese and pate!

loooouise · 21/01/2009 21:07

I abstained until week 13 but now have a glass or two on a Friday night. I don't feel guilty about this: I work incredibly hard, which I'm sure does wonders for my blood pressure. Far better for me (and therefore baby) to sip a small Chablis v.e.r.y s.l.o.w.l.y than to sit and stew over everything that didn't get done over the week.

MustHaveaVeryShortMemory · 21/01/2009 21:10

Yes, as soon as I get past the sickness. Everything in moderation.

dinny · 21/01/2009 21:13

yes, I have done in all three of my pregnancies (3rd trimester when sickness has gone)

fishie · 21/01/2009 21:14

yes. check how strong it is though, if 14% or over then you might find it a bit of a shock!

PavlovtheCat · 21/01/2009 21:15

I thought I would, until it made me throw up!

PavlovtheCat · 21/01/2009 21:17

Reallytired - my mum was told to do this too, to help combat the annemia she was suffering from...she drank it every day. It has done me no harm that I can tell.

stumbles off the chair to get another guiness>

littleboyblue · 21/01/2009 21:18

Yeah, I do. Go for it. My mw told me to last time just to help me unwind and relax a bit. Just don't go mad!

pluto · 21/01/2009 21:24

Yes - one glass once every week or two after first trimester. Lovely. No feelings of guilt at all.

xxhunnyxx · 21/01/2009 22:38

Go for it, as long as it is just the one smallish glass and u don't do it too often I'd say it's fine.
I've had the very occasional drink but I do just save it for nice meals or special occasions, makes u appreciate it more too.

mrsboogie · 21/01/2009 23:08

Absolutely. I really enjoyed slowly sipping a nice glass of red on a Friday night when pregnant recently.

AccidentalMum · 21/01/2009 23:11

My mum did the daily Guinness when PG with me because she was aneamic....she was only 17 and not even 9st when she gave birth

Littlemisskiwi · 22/01/2009 00:39

Go for it. I've only fancied a glass very occasionaly but when I've felt like it, I'll have small one.

Nekabu · 22/01/2009 13:16

The latest blurb says 1-2 units a week are fine (and my mw said the same) so that's what I go for. Not every single week and usually it's just 1 unit but occasionally I do have 2.
