Do many of you have the odd glass of wine in pregnancy?

Am v tempted tonight. DH cooking nice meal - I have had a bit of a week and really fancy just a small glass of wine.

Normally I don't touch a drop when I am pregnant and have lost track of what the recomendations are.

Do you think 1 glass would hurt?

Thanks for the advice. I had a lovely (small!) glass of white wine and I felt so relaxed afterwards. I really helped me unwind after a very difficult few days.

I also had the best night sleep I have had in ages!

Enjoy your glass of wine!

brettgirl2 · 22/01/2009 18:00

They only say zero because lots of people are so stupid they think that two units is too large glasses of Shiraz !

brettgirl2 · 22/01/2009 18:02

and some are so stupid they don't know the difference between too and two

my sil sat next to prof. robert winston at a fancy dinner whilst heavily pregnant and he positivly encouraged her to have a small glass of wine....

I had a very small glass of red wine maybe once a week from 5/6 mths onwards with DC1. With DC2 I had a few large glasses a week towards the very end, actually, and the odd half a Guinness or glass of bubbly.

I was teetotal for the first 3 months (first timer so quite paranoid), and now I have a half glass of red wine most Friday and Saturday nights. Maybe next pregnancy I will become so bold as to have a full glass twice a week. Have been completely mocked by doctor friends and mums who were pregnant in the 70s/80s for drinking so little, so I think you are/I am fine to have a couple of glasses a couple of times a week. I did read somewhere that these new total abstinence NHS guidelines were put in place because some women read "2 units a week" as "all you can drink", so saying "nothing at all" will hopefully result in "2 units a week". Cheers!

Bottoms up! Don't deprive yourself of a lovely little treat - we deserve it for lugging our future offspring around all week!

This article seems quite balanced to me:

Although to be honest, I can't really face alcohol anymore and I used to drink at least a glass of wine every night.

brylbump · 23/01/2009 19:24

im 24 weeks and have the occasional glass of white wine and lemonade but find it gives me heartburn.

vesela · 23/01/2009 21:23

With my first pregnancy, instead of having an occasional small glass I just used to have a tiny sip of DH's wine/beer more often. I found that easier than the 'special occasion' approach.

Too right - although I really didn't fancy alcohol until around 20 weeks. Now however I allow myself a small glass of wine when I feel like it which works out around twice a week. But I'm not religious about it and if it ends up being three times a week - oh well!

babyinbelly · 24/01/2009 20:47

Had half a bottle last night.
Dont do it very often tho. That was left over from xmas!

mummy2joshuarileyandbump · 25/01/2009 22:08

I had a cheeky half earlier 1st drink in ages..and it gave me blasted heartburn
I don't see the problem with having a glass here and there.
With DD2 I didnt drink at all, as again, it gave me heartburn, the 1st drink I had after having him, I was drunk. These days it doesnt take me a lot to get tiddled so I suppose its a good thing not drinking whilst pg...cheap n cheerful night out afterwards lol

mummy2joshuarileyandbump · 25/01/2009 22:09

I meant DS2 lol

nuttygirl · 25/01/2009 22:11

I don't see any problem with having an odd glass or two but my problem is I can't stand the taste of it when I'm pregnant.

dan39 · 26/01/2009 09:43

I think its fine and I try but can rarely finish the glass - dh calls it 'minding a glass'. I love wine normally! When I go to the pub I have half a guinness which I also love - again, I struggle to finish and its def enough. I think its really clever that your body tells you what to have.

Madigan · 26/01/2009 10:31

I have been advised by my consultant to drink 1/2 pint guinness every day to keep my iron levels up ...............

I don't do it though, as I don't particularly enjoy it ... eat more steak/spinach instead.

But I have no problems with having a couple of small (i.e. 125ml) glasses of wine every week.

mummy2t · 26/01/2009 10:41

i always feel guilty for drinkinwhile pregnant, but do love having a glass on an evening. i did drink lambrusso light at 3% and i also added lemonade, would that be ok to still have a tipple while pregnant? its practically pop but obviously still does contain alcohol

auntyspan · 26/01/2009 10:42

Have gone off wine but have the odd half pint of lager every now and again.... also had a glass of champers at new year and felt V light headed!!

rachels103 · 27/01/2009 21:07

I've had the odd glass and don't see anything wrong with it - I think the advice to drink nothing at all is because people can be unclear of the limits...I had a glass of champagne on NYE and hadn't bothered with anything since, but had a glass at the weekend and really enjoyed it.

lilysmummy2007 · 28/01/2009 03:26

i did not find out i was pregnant till i was 19 weeks 6 days due to a hormone imbalance i suffer which makes my period irregular and i had boozed quite a lot to be honest mainly after work or with dinner, and not just wine or beer, proper spirits and quite a bit of southern comfort. i stopped as soon as i found out. my daughter was born very healthy, and happy and still is to this day .i think a glass or two wont hurt if its just a special ocassion
