What's considered a bleed in pregnancy?

I've had a tiny smear of pinky/brown mucusy discharge on two consecutive nights and this morning I had a tiny smear of pink, quite watery. I'm 6 weeks pg tomorrow. I've had not what I'd call pain, more like achey-ness, which I was hoping was stretching sensations. Do you think I've had what's considered a bleed or does it have to be heavier?

Tillyscoutsmum · 21/01/2009 08:47

At around this time it could be an implantation bleed.

I had 2 mc's and also bled with dd - all times it was heavy red bloody (like a heavy period) and there was clotting and quite bad period like pain with the mc's (but none with the successful pregnancy).

littleboyblue · 21/01/2009 08:49

It doesn't sound like anything I've had. Any amount of blood loss should be checked though to most importantly rule out ectopic pregnsncy

HeadFairy · 21/01/2009 08:51

I had a mc in October and I was bleeding pretty much from the start, I only did a pregnancy test because it was so light, and the pregnancy test was positive, but I carried on bleeding, then a week later it got heavier, with strong pain and I miscarried. This seems so different so I'm clinging on to hope, but I'm so terrified.

Of course you are. I've mc 3 times, but it's always been brown like old blood or bright red and heavy so not what you're describing. Give your gp a call, hopefully they can get you an appointment at EPU to give you some reassurance

HeadFairy · 21/01/2009 08:55

Luckily the EPU operate a walk in system so I don't need an appt, but I can't get through to them on the phone, no one's answering. I wanted to call first to see if they think it's worth trying to have an early scan and even like you say, rule out ectopic pregnancy.

Please get it checked out regardless of how small it is.

I had a bleed with dd1 at 16weeks, much like you described, which turned out to be cervical erosion and nothing to do with dd iykwim. I had another small bleed in my next pregnancy again at 16 weeks which turned out to be a missed m/c. I nearly didn't get it checked after everything being well with dd1.

You are right to be terrified, did you manage to get through to EPU yet?

littleboyblue · 21/01/2009 09:01

They prob don't open til 9. They might tell you to wait a week if you're not in pain though as the heartbeat is better detected at 7 weeks and if you aren't in a great deal of pain as would be with ectopic. You could give them another call in a bit, but if my EPU was a walk in, I'd just go in person, it's easier to get fobbed off and ignored on the phone

DustyTv · 21/01/2009 09:06

Headfairy, I have had lots of bleeding with this pg and most of it was heavy like a period then trailed off to a brown discharge. I also did have a bit of pink mucusy discharge in between the heavy bleeding. I had a lot of bad period type pain with it also.

Yours could be an implantation bleed, but any bleeding in pg needs to be checked out in case of an ectopic pg.

Get down to you EPU and get checked out, it is the only way you will know.

Take care, let us know how you get on.

DustyTv · 21/01/2009 09:07

Oh yes do go down, if they operate a walk in system then they will probably see you if you actually go to them.

HeadFairy · 21/01/2009 09:09

Thanks everyone, still no answer at the epu, I'll keep trying and let you know what happens. I'm sure have the wierdness in my tummy is nerves, I feel like my legs are going to buckle under me, the adrenaline is really pumping, and not in a nice way!

I'm checking myself every ten minutes, at this rate we're going to have no loo roll left! Nothing more, totally clear, not even a smudge.

Gosh you poor thing, I had the exactly same thing this time last year and I remember how terrified I was! Luckily, I also live near a walk-in EPU and they were really nice to me (I'd had an mc the year before) and saw me really quickly. Turned out to be implantation bleeding - they could see the sac and detected a heartbeat, even at 6 weeks, so it is possible.

Just go there as soon as they open, even if you can't get through on the phone, and hopefully they will fit you in. Best of luck, I really hope it's good news for you.

HeadFairy · 21/01/2009 09:11

Only problem is I've got ds with me, and I'd rather not sit there for an hour if they say there's really no point. I have a funny feeling they'll say rest up for another week, try not to worry, come in if the bleeding gets heavy but otherwise try and wait to at least 7 weeks for an early scan. That's what they said last time, unfortunately I mc'd before I got to 6 weeks.

OP posts:
BibiThree · 21/01/2009 09:17

If you go and tell them how scared you are and how you're feeling physically, they should realise a week will be too long a time to "wait and see".
I'm sure your ds will be a welcome distraction while you're waiting, better than being sat there alone staring at the walls.

Best of luck. x

HeadFairy · 21/01/2009 09:53

Still can't get through to them, I've got a friend coming over today too, I really really don't want to tell anyone I'm pg so I can't really cancel and tell her why. I've just had the tiniest smear of brown again, it really is miniscule. Is it really possible to get implantation bleeding this late?

OP posts:
HeadFairy · 21/01/2009 09:54

I can't believe it, I've been on hold for ages, and I had them on speaker so I could get on with a few things, and they answered, only for me to press the wrong button and hang up!!!!!! I HATE THIS PHONE!!!! Now they're engaged, I need chocolate

Oh what a bugger WRT the phone. I think going down to your EPU will be the best bet TBH. Take your DS, a toy and some snacks and the waiting time will fly by.

Explain t them how you are feeling emotionally and it making you feel physically on edge. I am sure they will scan you, you never know they may be able to detect a heart beat this early.

HeadFairy · 21/01/2009 10:02

Thanks dusty. Finally I just got through to them, I'm glad I didn't go down, because of sickness they've only got one sonographer and 23 women waiting to be seen so the woman I spoke to said she didn't think I'd get seen today, but if I'm there by 8.30 tomorrow I'll be able to get in, and they said 6 weeks is fine to see something. DS will just have to have a lovely day at the hospital tomorrow!

DustyTv · 21/01/2009 10:16

Oh thats good, nice and early tomorrow as well so hopefuly they will be able to set your mind at rest.

Your DS will love it, I remember feeling a bit guilty when I had to go to the EPU and take DD with me (5 times) when I was bleeding. DD loved it as she is a bit of a nosy parker and loves to people watch. Old before her time, she is only 14mo lol.

I really hope all goes well for you, please come back and let us know how you get on.

TrixieVix · 21/01/2009 10:31

HeadFairy - that's exactly what I had yesterday! Sent me in panic overload.....it was a brownish stretchy discharge (think that's the best way to describe it) and was accompanied by weird almost pains, but not quite in my abdomen. Am also 6 weeks (well, 5+5 weeks) so seem to be in exactly the same boat as you!

Haven't phoned the GP yet, as not had any this morning, but will do this afternoon if things continue.

Hope all's well for you x

jennylindinha · 21/01/2009 10:33

Good luck for tomorrow Fairy. Hopefully seeing your friend may take your mind off things for a bit and you can try and relax. Best wishes.

HeadFairy · 21/01/2009 11:45

aw thanks everyone I'm feeling much happier knowing that I'm going to know much more tomorrow. Set my mind at ease. Of course I've had no more spotting or pain, but that's a goooooood thing!!!

DS is going to be a nightmare there, he's the most physical destructive force on earth, but hopefully running around after him will take my mind off the wait.

Trixie, I hope you don't have any more of that horrible stuff, and that what you did have was implantation blood. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the both of us

HF - Hope it goes well today

HeadFairy · 22/01/2009 11:05

Hi tillyscoutsmum... well it was all very puzzling. I had my scan and the sonographer couldn't see anything, nothing in the tubes (phew!) but nothing in my womb either, not even a sac. I've had bloods done, got to do another set on saturday and I'll know the results on monday, but I'm starting to think it might be a chemical pregnancy, but I did wonder if a chem pregnancy would go on this long as I should be 6 weeks gone by now. So, I'm just assuming the worst, and hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised. Of course, now I've decided I'm not pg, I've just had a massive wave of nausea and hunger, plus my nips are tingling like crazy. I reckon my body is playing tricks with me!

OP posts:
Tillyscoutsmum · 22/01/2009 11:37

Gosh - how strange. At least it wasn't ectopic. Hope you get a pleasant surprise though.

Let us know.

Are you ok ? Is you dp/dh with you ?

HeadFairy · 22/01/2009 11:40

It is all a bit strange. I have a feeling it's a chem pregnancy, so I'm bracing myself for it. Dh is at work, I'm on my own with ds but we're about to go swimming so I can take my mind off it with that...
