'safe' bottles which are anti-colic and have a 'natural' teat?

Hi there,

Can anyone recommend 'safe' bottles (i.e. Polycarbonate and Bisphenol A (BPA) free) but which are also good at preventing colic and have a natural teat so can use alongside breastfeeding?

I did use Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature last time but app these have BPA in them.

Can anyone recommend another brand? Are MAM any good?

Thanks

I think i read playtex, born free, bibi and safemama do them.
If i have to use bottles i'll use dr browns ant colic but the are not not sure about bpa free i think they might be doing them need to check. havent used mam before.

Pinkbump3 · 19/01/2009 18:30

I think dr browns where tested for bpa and it came up not detected. try dr brown website.

MAM are an awful faff to wash and they leaked quite a lot too.

picklesmama · 20/01/2009 13:32

I use MAM and they've not leaked (Avent leaked quite a bit last time I remember) and easy to wash in the dishwasher! I used MAM teats last time too.
Mind you it is only for the odd EBM as DS only 4 months.

AccidentalMum · 20/01/2009 13:42

Hi.
NUK or Green Baby do glass bottles compatible with NUK teats (wide and narrow respectively) which are famous for being acceptable to BF babies. Also glass bottles are great for heating up EBM in hot water...much quicker than plastic. They really are worth investigating,I ahve used them with both mine.

solo · 20/01/2009 13:43

I think they are all ok as long as you don't microwave them. Willing to be corrected on that though.

AccidentalMum · 20/01/2009 15:28

I thought it was putting warm liquid into them that was the problem...

whinegums · 20/01/2009 15:45

In the latest Mothercare catalogue, the TT bottles are BPA free. I think BPA becomes an issue if the bottles are scratched.

Pinkbump3 · 20/01/2009 20:30

I have read dr browns are doing glass bottle with the anti colic valve.

I have to agree when i used avent the always leaked and where a real PTA! Have never used mam though.

solo · 21/01/2009 09:45

Yes AM, I think you are right.

solo · 21/01/2009 09:47

I never had a problem with Avent bottles with Ds and have used the same bottles years on for Dd(well only a handful of times, she wouldn't take to a bottle)...no leaks.

firstontheway · 21/01/2009 10:15

I'm a neonatal nurse and find the dr brown bottles to be wonderful in terms of reducing colic, and baby taking them. But am doing some research on these bottles for my own baby at the mo... they look wonderful as I want to combne feed, but they're expensive and I'm not sure if they're just a gimmick. Anyone else used these?

solo · 21/01/2009 10:41

They do look good, though wont you have to replace the whole bottle every time you need a faster flow? if so, that could work out very expensive.

firstontheway · 21/01/2009 10:57

Yep, they are VERY expensive Although the most annoying thing is how cheap they are in US compared to here! I'm kind of justifying the cost to myself by hoping I'll only have to have one bottle at a time as will breastfeed.

Am also wondering if all the milk will leak out when you initially pour it in... as it's the bottom of the bottle that comes off rather than the teat part. Can imagine pouring in lovingly expressed milk only to loose half of it through the teat!

solo · 21/01/2009 11:10

I watched the video again firston and she keeps the cap on whilst pouring the milk in, so that would prevent the milk from dripping/flowing out. I did notice that the last baby on the video to be feeding from the bottle sucks on the end on the teat rather than having the whole of the simulated 'breast' in his mouth...that could cause problems potentially, especially if you are going to be breast feeding as well.
When I mixed EMB bottle feeding and breast feeding with my Ds, I used Avent and he did have the majority of the teat in his mouth as he did the breast. Hope that all makes sense?
How much are those new bottles?

firstontheway · 21/01/2009 11:21

Mmmm I see what you mean... may encourage 'nipple' rather than breastfeeding?

I can't find many places that sell them tbh, but on ebay they're about £10 each (new). Ridiculous! If I had a guarantee they'd work, It's obviously worth the money, but if dr brown/ avent ones are just as good, I don't want to spend so much money on a gimmick!

solo · 21/01/2009 11:28

Well, I can only speak about my own experience with Avent and it was a good one. Dd only decided she would entertain a bottle after she got to a year old. She is 2 now and still bfing(I don't give her bottles).
I think I still have some Avent bottles here. I did give some away, but if I can find them would you like them for post? I could send you some teats too if you feel ok with used ones ~ they have no splits in. I'd have to search them out though. At least you wouldn't have to pay out for the Avent to try them...(assuming I can find them of course).

firstontheway · 21/01/2009 11:33

Oooo that'd be wonderful if you still have them, thank you! I think that's the best idea then tbh... try out some cheaper brands and don't spend so much... at least not until 6 mo baby still won't take a bottle and I begin to panic

My email is, anniekry @ hotmail.com

solo · 21/01/2009 11:35

Ok. Will drop you a line later...

BlameItOnTheBogey · 21/01/2009 11:35

I bought a whole load of the avent BPA free ones and wouldn't recommend them (we previously had the normal avent ones and were happy). The BPA ones don't seem to seal properly and every single one we have leaks when upside down. We have lost a lot of milk that way and have found ourselves out with nothing to feed the baby...

bangandthedirtisgone · 21/01/2009 11:38

MAM are great.
