Losing weight in pregnancy

Is it normal to lose rather than gain weight in pregnancy?

I'm 16 weeks, was 9st 13lb before I got pregnant. At 12 weeks I was 10st 3lb. Then I weighed myself a week ago and I'd dropped to 10st, then today I'm 9st 13 3/4 so basically back to my pre-pregnancy weight.

I don't have a huge bump unless I eat loads, and I still fit into all my jeans, sometimes with the help of an elastic band at the waist, but surely the baby/fluid etc must weigh soemthing at this stage? I do eat quite a bit, especially Pizza Hut as I work there, but I also walk a lot and run around at work for 5/6 hours at a time. Is this weight loss normal in the circumstances, or should I be worried?

Have you had a lot of morning sickness? That's the most common, but not only, factor.

belgo · 13/01/2009 09:20

how do you feel in yourself? If you are feeling well, then I wouldn't be worried.

I lost weight in pregnancy due to morning sickness.

TeenyTinyToria · 13/01/2009 09:26

No morning sickness, just a bit of nausea. I've been feeling flutters, so I know baby is ok, but I don't see a midwife again till 28 weeks, so unsure as to whether it's worth ringing up about. If I had an appointment I would just mention it in passing.

I feel fine, a bit tired now and then but that's it.

I think as belgo says, there's not a lot to worry about if you feel okay & you can feel the baby moving. If you need reassurance, then it's worth speaking to your midwife, just to put your mind at rest, but it's fairly common for weight to fluctuate in pregnancy

TeenyTinyToria · 13/01/2009 10:26

Thanks, I'll see how it goes for a few weeks, and speak to the midwife if I'm worried.

I weigh less 9st3 now at 14 wks than i did b4 pregnant was 9st8 don't know how as eating loads. And my bump is huge already.I think body just using up lots of enegy running round after other 2 kids.

Lionstar · 13/01/2009 12:49

I lost weight in the first 3 months because I completely lost my appetite and had to force myself to eat (very little nausea though). As a result I only put on baby weight, all of which went after the birth - and I ended up weighing at least 5Kg less than I did pre-pregnancy. DD was born at 37 weeks 3.26Kg so she was totally fine with it!

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/01/2009 12:53

You're only 'supposed' to gain 5lbs up to 20 weeks, so prob only 3lbs or so at the point that you're at. Really not worth worrying about at this stage!

Fwiw I gained no weight throughout either of my pregnancies (though was overweight to start with and had diet controlled gestational diabetes with ds).

xxhunnyxx · 13/01/2009 13:01

I'm 15 weeks and I'm kind of similar to u, I put on about 4-5 lbs in about the first 11 weeks and then I stayed the same for a few weeks and then this week I've lost 2lbs. I think it's mainly due to the fact that I ate so many sweets and sugary foods at the beginning and now that I'm feeling better I've started eating healthier, I'm not dieting, just eating how I used to eat before getting pregnat.
As long as you're eating properly and monitoring your weight I doubt that it should be a problem.

TeenyTinyToria · 13/01/2009 13:14

That's reassuring to know, CSWS. I was massive with ds1, put on about 3 stone overall, but I was practically housebound from 30 weeks. I don't want to go through that again!

Don't want to alarm you but I lost weight in the first few months of my first pregnancy...thought it was just eating healthily and not drinking...in my case it turned out I was developing Type 1 diabetes. It would be incredibly rare for that to be the case though, and really early for gestational diabetes to be rearing it's head. I presume you've not had sugar in urine, marked increased thirst etc but if you have it might be worth asking if you could do the glucose tolerance test early just to rule this out.

TeenyTinyToria · 13/01/2009 13:28

My last urine test said CC next to it in my notes - don't know what this means? No extra thirst. I haven't even been eating very healthily

You're 16 weeks and you don't see a midwife again until 28 weeks?

Is that right?? Seems an awfully long time between appts.

mrsboogie · 13/01/2009 13:32

if you drank alcohol before being pg and have now stopped that could account for weight loss.

Am surprised at the long gap between your m/w appointments though.

wellbalanced · 13/01/2009 13:39

Teeny- i think the C means clear, ive had sugar in urine in all my samples and its marked by a + or 2 ++'s depending how high.

Ive seen my midwife 16wk, 20wk, 25wk and 28wk (next week)

TeenyTinyToria · 13/01/2009 13:52

Thanks, wellbalanced.

Not a drinker, now or ever.

It's my second baby, so we only get I think 7 visits in all. I saw the midwife at 8 weeks to book in and then 16 weeks, had a scan at 12 weeks and one at 20, but they are only scans, not midwife appointments, and then I see her at 28 weeks, 32 weeks, 36 weeks, 38 weeks and then term for a sweep if needed. I had one extra appointment at 24 weeks with my first baby.

I think it's pretty bad too tbh, I thought things like bp and urine had to be checked regularly.

It took me till 16 weeks to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I'm not weighing myself any more and I'm sure you can guess why that is! (27 weeks lol )

ranirani · 13/01/2009 18:28

Hi Teeny, you are 16 weeks PG, but seeing your MW next time at 28 weeks? are you sure?
you are suppose to see her at 20 weeks, then 24 weeks and then 28. are you in UK?

mrsboogie · 13/01/2009 18:30

yes, you are supposed to have urine checks and bp etc. doesn't sound right tbh.

TeenyTinyToria · 13/01/2009 20:42

Yes, in the UK. It says in my notes that I get less visits because it's not my first baby. I'm in central Scotland. The mw commented that it was a long wait when she made the next appointment, but didn't seem to see it as a problem.

mumface · 13/01/2009 20:45

I've seen my MW today at 14weeks & been told i won't see har again till 28 weeks too. It's new guidelines if it's not your first baby apparently.I was a bit surprised.

TeenyTinyToria · 13/01/2009 20:57

Yep, it doesn't seem to make much sense. Only seven visits in my area, I've just checked.

flippineck · 13/01/2009 21:43

That's the schedule round here too for second/subsequent pregnancies. My midwife just told me to make an appointment to see my GP if anything was bothering me between visits, or just call her.

ranirani · 14/01/2009 00:51

weird new schedule to be honest. especially if we are not getting any younger and going on having kids, i thought there should be regular routine checks. Maybe also depends on expectant mother's age, if she is not over 35....

TeenyTinyToria · 14/01/2009 00:54

I think maternity care has generally gone downhill - my mum had her last child 12 years ago, and had visits every month, then every fortnight from 32 weeks, then every week from 36 weeks. She had all her notes on a small pink piece of card.

Whereas I carry my notes round in a volume the size of the Encyclopedia Britannica, and get seen only 7 times in my entire pregnancy.
