Ok,...My mate had her last proper period end of October and is on the mini pill, her periods are very iregular, and some sometimes she wont have a proper bleed.

She was anti biotics and took the morning after pill beg of Dec and a week after had a small bleed.

Anyway so shes taken 2 tests both diff makes and they came up positive, (shes only been with her new partner a short time) so the nxt day she felt she should do another, one came up positive and TWO negative. She then went to the doctors and their test came up negative.

She has had cramping the past few days and clumpy white dishcarge (sorry if tmi) but no period.

All her poitive tests were cheap tests unbranded and bought at diff times, and one cheaper test is neg,....

Any opinions views or comments would be much appreciated cos we're more than baffled now....

Thankyou x

you can't get a false positive. there has to be HcG in your urine to get a positive

testing a lot in early pregnancy, especually not with first morning wee can mean a false negative result

she needs to be monitored carefully as the MAP increases the risk of an ectopic pregnmancy, and if she is having pain she really should be seen by an EPAU very soon

StealthPo09IsHere · 03/01/2009 20:42

sorry to put this on every possible thread, but I had a false +ve with a sainsbury's test. Quite a few other MNers found the same.
Were they from there?

MeNmyGirl · 03/01/2009 20:48

Hi, thanks for advise

No the cheap ones were a make called Freedom which u can buy from £1 shop or Wilkinson, three tests strips in a pack, which i have used with 2 pregnancies and both worked fine.

Her doc has advised her that she is NOT pregnant and she is still currantly taking her mini pill.....

i hope everyone complained to sainsbury's then !

i would still be checked out, if only for the MAP being a factor

nappyaddict · 03/01/2009 21:12

I thought most often if you get a false positive it is likely that you were pregnant but lost it very early on and what you thought was your period when it came wasn't. I think it's called a chemical pregnancy?

StealthPo09IsHere · 03/01/2009 21:17

na - but other tests were -ve.
Anyway, sorry to hijack this thread, as well as the hundreds of others I've hijacked in the same way

nappyaddict · 03/01/2009 21:19

Those tests may just not have been sensitive enough to pick it up so early on?

TotalChaos · 03/01/2009 21:20

Agree with Lulu. I think she should be checked out. The GP tests aren't better than the home ones these days. My GP test only came up with a faint line when the HPT the day before came up with a strong line immediately.

xxhunnyxx · 03/01/2009 21:20

A positive test result means she is pregnant, doesn't really matter if the tests are cheap or expensive, they're all the same inside. And the tests that they do at the doctor's are just the same as the ones you do at home. It could be that the negative tests were due to not being morning wee?? Maybe wait a couple more days for the hcg hormone to kick in properly (if she is pregnant) and then do another test.
The other possibility is that she's had a chemical pregnancy but she's not started to bleed yet, the body can even sometimes just absorb the pregnancy.
Defo do another test in a couple of days.

scardypants · 03/01/2009 21:24

aren't there other, albeit very rare, cases where hcg can be present for reasons other than pregnancy?

maybe a reason for a hpt giving a positve result where there is no pregnancy?

Could be talking through my hat though as it's just a vague recollection of something I read or heard.

xxhunnyxx · 03/01/2009 21:25

Sorry to have to ask this but r u sure your friend is actually telling the truth? It would seem very strange that the doctor would say that she is catagorically not pregnant. They would usually say that if she still hasn't got a period within so many days then to go back to do another test or do blood tests. Some people take a while to produce a high enough level of hcg for a regular test to give a positive result so require blood tests. A doubt that a doctor would say she defo isn't pregnant under the circumstances.

MeNmyGirl · 03/01/2009 21:36

Hi, yea sorry, my fault. She was told by the doctor to go have bloods taken and was given the papers to go get it done but shes not one for going to doctors/hospital, i guess she would rather wait another few days n do another test.

Thankyou all again for advise, and SCARDYPANTS i was also wondering this, tried to google it lol but cant find much info. I agree with xxhunnyxx,...

Thankyou all for your comments! x

she's far better off getting bloods done as they give a definite answer.

whitenoise · 03/01/2009 21:40

could the small bleed at start of dec not have been a small period?

MeNmyGirl · 03/01/2009 21:45

Yeah we think it was a period but she put it down to having the MAP x

aaargh
I had a +ve test result on a sainsbury's one. -ves on first response and boots own.
Was not pregnant!
I am not alone in this!

brettgirl2 · 04/01/2009 10:53

Having been on the mini pill I investigated how it 'works'. It apparently works by blocking the entrance of sperm through changing the makeup of the cm. Then if that fails (comforting!) it changes the lining of the womb to make implantation harder. Therefore, it surely has to be quite likely that action A failed, therefore the fetus tried to implant (and gave a positive test) then failed. (Chemical pg). Her periods are bound to be haywire on it.

It all sounds highly unreliable to me - when my pg is over I am deffo going to switch to something else! I don't know if the above makes sense to anyone else but it does to me!

Bubbaluv · 04/01/2009 11:15

Stealth, how do you know you weren't pregnant?

BabyBaby123 · 04/01/2009 11:33

i got pregnant this time on the mini pill - i never missed on - I just don't think it's reliable enough on it's own. None of the midwives/doctors I've seen during my pregnancy have been remotely surprised - seems to be quite a regular occurance. I think it's only reliable if used alongside something else - I read (after finding out I was pg) that you can still ovulate quite reliably on it - I had regular periods on it so know I was ovulating every month - so you should really use condoms too.

Regarding your friend, I think she needs to do another test of her own and if it's positive demand to be seen at A & E/EPAU as there is an increased risk of ectopic - I was scanned at 6 weeks for this reason and was told by the doctor there I should have gone in sooner really.

brettgirl2 · 04/01/2009 11:43

Yes - I only took it because I wasn't 'that' bothered if I got pg anyway. She should definitely do another test in a couple of days.

Pseudocreme · 04/01/2009 11:50

babybaby, regular periods do not mean you are ovulating- although you obviously were ovulating- you can have regular periods and not ovulate at all.

OP, your friend needs to have the blood test done.

It's entirely possible for some brands to show up a + days or weeks before others so a mixture of + and - is entirely feasible. If you had a chem. pg it would then be possibly to wrongly assume that the sole +ive was wrong.

StealthPo09IsHere · 04/01/2009 15:48

false +ve thread here and here
Then there's the one I started but I can't find that
I suppose there's a chance I was pg and lost it but the first response test (which is meant to be the most sensitive?) said -ve. Do the sainsbury's ones have a reputation for being really sensitive?

undercovermummy · 04/01/2009 16:31

I think it is all down to the test you use. With my ds i used clear blue the day before af was due and it came up negative but the following day i used 1st response and it was very clearly positive. With dd i used 1st response and got a positive straightaway . Used a clear blue on Friday with morning wee and it was negative but did a 1st response later that afternoon (1 day before af was due) and got a very clear positive.

Perhaps she could try another towards the end of this week and use her morning wee and see what that says.

Fingers crossed that she gets the result she is looking for.

StealthPo09IsHere · 04/01/2009 16:32

undercovermummy, have you been on MN long?

Lulumama · 04/01/2009 16:34

the complicating factor here is the MAP

it can increase risk of ectopic , so having had BFP & BFN,your friend needs further investigation, just in case
