I am not entitled to either a nuchal scan or a 20 week anomoly scan- what one (if any) should I get done privately?

I live in Glasgow and am PG with #2. I was able to get a nuchal scan in my 1st pregnancy on the NHS and we then paid for a private anomoly scan at 20 weeks because we aren't entitled to 20 week ones on the NHS here (!).

I'm not sure what to do now with this pregnancy- I would like to get both a nuchal scan and a 20 week scan but we can't afford both (would be £200 each). My hospital no longer does nuchal scans on the NHS grrrrrrrrrr so that would need to be private this time. I'm in a bit of a dilemma- should I get a nuchal scan OR a 20 week anomoly scan OR neither?

I've just turned 33.

Help!

For me I'd get an anomaly scan done. It depends on what you are worried about, but an anomaly scan would pick up other conditions, or anything that might be of concern during your pregnancy.

What scans do you get in Scotland?

randomnamegenerator · 22/12/2008 21:46

Can you transfer to another health board? Mine didn't offer anomaly scans but I am near the border so I went elsewhere.

ilikeyoursleeves · 22/12/2008 21:50

I could go to Stirling but they don't do nuchals or anomoly scans either as far as I know. I'm not really worried about anything in particular, I guess I'd just like the scans as I had them with DS and they really put my mind at rest.

I don't think we'd do anything if something was picked up (unless it was extremely serious and life threatening for baby) so not really sure what to do at all! I think I'm just really pissed off that we don't get the scans we are entitled to up here. I will get a booking in scan at 12 weeks but that doesn't include the nuchal test. And then no scans after that at all

I live in Scotland (Edinburgh) as well and so did get a basic scan at 12 weeks but not the nuchal measurements. I'm now waiting for my amnio results to come back for downs syndrone. I WISH I had had a nuchal scan earlier as it'd have made a big difference to have been warned about this sooner (I'm now 19 weeks). Whatever the results, I'll now get a full anomaly scan on the NHS as my bloods weren't right.

That said, I didn't have a nuchal scan with DS and all was well. And the anomaly scan (private) was really reassuring.

I'm 31 btw.

AnybodyHoHoHomeMcFly · 22/12/2008 21:59

I would choose the anomaly scan unless you have partic cause to suspect you would be at high risk of Down's etc. 33 still pretty young re risk

BabyBaby123 · 22/12/2008 22:07

why don't they do either?? what do they do then? - just blood tests? How to they detect problems? God, that's awful.

ilikeyoursleeves · 22/12/2008 22:10

Monica, I hope everything goes well with your amnio results and that you haven't got too long to wait.

Babybaby- yes they just do blood tests and a basic 12 week scan to see if you really are PG and hpw many there are! I know, it's the pits.

I would go for the 20 week scan.

meep · 23/12/2008 09:41

I am in Scotland as well and with dd paid for both the nuchal and the anomaly scan. With this pregnancy we paid for the nuchal - got a high risk result (whcih turned out to be fine) so got an NHS anomaly scan at 20 weeks.

Monica - hope all goes well for you - tbh knowing my results were high risk at an early stage was hell. We had to decide between having an amnio or a cvs and opted to wait for the amnio - and the waiting was so hard - possibly the worst 4 weeks ever. That said tha mw's at ERI are so lovely about it so you are in good hands.

They are supposedly going to change things in Edinburgh so that you only get a 20 week anomaly scan - and they will bin teh 12 week scan

CaptainKarvol · 23/12/2008 09:47

Anomaly scan, every time.

nulgirl · 23/12/2008 10:46

why don't you try to delay your nhs 12 week scan until it is closer to the 20 weeks? I'm in Glasgow and because of my doctor delaying sending my records I didn't get my nhs scan until 18 weeks. This meant that the scan was actually more like an anomaly scan and was much more detailed than the dating one. In addition to that I had a private dating scan at the Nuffield hospital at my estimated 12 weeks to set my mind at ease ( I didn't mention this to the midwife as they might have cancelled my nhs one).

This ended up much cheaper for us as private dating scans cost way less than anomaly scans. I didn't get a nuchal scan as I didn't consider the risks to be that high (am 32) and my bloods came back showing low risk

I would pay for the anomoly scan rather than the nuchal if you can only have one.
When you are having your 12 week scan there is nothing to stop you asking the sonographer what she thinks of the nuchal space, or if she can see a nasal bone.
It isnt the same as having your odds calculated, but it will give you a guide.

juststartedknitting · 30/12/2008 16:22

Hi,
I also live in Glasgow and am getting a bit annoyed about the lack of 20 week scan too.

I'm 17 weeks and now that the first trimester symptoms have disappeared, I often worry that I don't feel pregnant much anymore.
I'd just like some reassurance but knowing that I'm not going to get ANY more scans is a little depressing. Just have t be patient and wait for the kicking, but it's so hard to wait!
I'm considering spending the money on a private 3D scan.
Where do you go in Glasgow for an anomaly scan?

Thanks!!

BoffinMum · 30/12/2008 16:31

Knitting, can you cross your fingers and tell them there's been a bit of bleeding, and get an extra scan that way??

highrise · 31/12/2008 11:57

you can go to Rosshall or the Nuffield for scans.

Weeteeny · 31/12/2008 12:19

I had a scan at the Southern General which they called my nuchal scan, it was the only scan I had. I thought everyone was entitled to this?

More so because my friend (who is in South Lanarkshire) who could not get a date with the NHS for her nuchal scan until she would have been about 16 weeks - (too late in development to see the relevant bit I think) booked a private scan instead - she then successfully claimed the fees back from the Healthboard as they were unable to get her an appt in time on the NHS. This was in summer of 2007.

TeenyTinyTorya · 31/12/2008 13:20

Stirling do anomaly scans at 20 weeks, I'm going for mine in February! I would have thought Glasgow would have done them, being a bigger authority.

juststartedknitting · 01/01/2009 16:28

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll see what I can get out of them at my next appointment and also check into Rosshall and Nuffield.

I have had one scan at 14 weeks, but it wasn't called a nuchal scan and they certainly didn't give me any info about that.
Thanks again

Poppet45 · 02/01/2009 17:58

Sorry for the dumb question, what's the link between the nasal bone and abnormalities. I haven't read that far through me book yet...

ilikeyoursleeves · 02/01/2009 21:59

Teenytiny- is your anomoly scan at Stirling on the NHS? In that case I may consider changing hospitals as I live directly between Glasgow and Stirling so I could go to either place. That would save me £200 on teh scan but then again it would be harder for folk to visit me in hosp once babba is born...

Knitting- you can get scans at the GCRM too which is near Cardonald, you can google them.

Poppet, I'm not too sure about it all either but I think the absence of a nasal bone is one of the markers for Downs.

Hi TeenyTiny & ilike...I'm also in the Stirling area and also have 20 week scan in Feb at Stirling. This is on the NHS, Stirling still offer the 20 week anomoly scan as part of the standard care.

Sorry to hijack thread ,but have either of you had any joy finding pre natal classes (exercise) anywhere? I'm really struggling to find classes outside work hours, I did post on local MN threads, but no joy yet...

ilikeyoursleeves · 03/01/2009 16:09

hi highrise,

When i was pg with ds in 2007 I went to antenatal yoga classes in the west end of Glasgow (Sat 11am I think), it was great but maybe too far for you to get to? I was living in Glasgow at the time.

Hi i too live in Glasgow and had a private nuchal scan last week as am 35 and have had high risk results for my last two pregnancies. Mine was done at the Nuffield for £200 by my NHS consultant!

I think there is only a very brief window of time when it can be done properly - 12 - 13 weeks I think.

He measured a space at the back of the baby's neck (i couldn't see it) and confirmed it had a nasal bone whcih was a good thing apparently. All very thorough and very professional and he was very reassuring.

I don't know if the anomaly scan is any better though.

Also they still do nuchal scans in Paisley, I think.

smallorange · 03/01/2009 16:20

By the way they don't really do nuchal scans in England either - just around London area apparently.

NowPregnant · 05/01/2009 13:30

Hi to everybody,

NHS will be offering anomaly scan in Scotland as a new rule from Jan 2009.

Please check with your GP/Midwife.

Great news for the New year.
