This is going to sound a bit odd...

but I'm 32 weeks and every now and again it feels as though the baby is 'fitting' inside me (as in having a fit).

It is no.4 and I haven't felt this before so I wondered if anyone else has?

It's a bit like the flutters you first got when feeling the baby move for the first time but stronger. At first I thought she must be kicking (like a dog does when it scratches itself) but she couldn't move that fast surely.

Ooh, perhaps she has special powers and can pummel other babies at top speed....
She can certainly hoof me enough in the night!

Hiccups?

youknownothingofthecrunch · 17/12/2008 13:29

Coughing? Do they cough?

sorkycake · 17/12/2008 13:34

It's faster than hiccups, I've felt those before in previous pg's. Def not the same.

If you shake your hand back and forth fast I imagine that's about the speed, bit like a twitch I suppose.

Why would a baby twitch?

I've been debating whether to tell the m/w, but I'm worried she'll think I'm completely insane

Coughing, hmm, I dunno. They don't 'breathe' do they so I'm not sure whether they would cough, but again it's def faster than a cough.

PinkPoinsettias · 17/12/2008 13:35

how long does it go on for? mine does this sometimes but it only lasts a few seconds generally, if it goes on for a sustained period of time it might be no harm asking your doctor about it, especially as it's your 4th and you've never felt this before

youknownothingofthecrunch · 17/12/2008 13:36

No, you're right it wouldn't be coughing. Hiccups with ds2 were very fast (and pretty much constant, nothing like ds1) coming every second or so.

Talk to your MW if you're worried. They've heard everything before and would be happy to reassure you. It's not insane.

sorkycake · 17/12/2008 13:39

No it doesn't last for long, a couple of seconds What did you think it could be PP? I thought it might be more of an involuntary movement type of thing.

Does a baby shiver? It could be the same kind of speed as that...is she cold inside?...I wouldn't have thought so, would've thought she'd be toasty

Neeerly3 · 17/12/2008 13:42

i get this too and this is DC3 (pregnancy two though). I actually think its bowel related, as in mine - you know how the first movements can be mistaken for wind because they feel like bubbles? when bump does his fluttering i think its wind doing the rounds in my intestine, but its path being blocked by an awkwardly lying baby. Does that make sense?

I get wicked constipation, followed by fabulous squirts every few days, so think my internal workings are generally screwed!

sorkycake · 17/12/2008 13:44

Nope Neeerly3 it's def not me, def is the baby.

I'm seeing the m/w on Friday I'll ask her. Or I might pop over to the larger families board, one of 'em might know, they've had loads, the odds are one of them knows what it'll be

PinkPoinsettias · 17/12/2008 13:45

i have no idea tbh, i do know one of my others did it too ( i can't remember whether it was ds or dd though!)

i'd imagine it's a twitch of some kind though as it really can't be anything else

kkey21 · 17/12/2008 13:47

Hi Sorky-now please please please don't panic but i could not ignore your thread. Exactly what you are describing sounds like what i felt in final few weeks of my pregancy, it felt like bubba was angry and was lashing out-trying to escape then all quiet for ages...this went on daily...

Then when i gave birth my baby boy had what the midwives call a 'true knot' in his cord aswell as being twice around his neck. The mad thrashing movements were possibly down to the fact in some positions he was cutting off his supply. My baby is lucky to be here with his knot. I kept putting off being monitored as i wanted a ''relaxed' pregancy 2nd time round but now know i am lucky to have him here.

PLEASE POP ALONG AND GET A TRACING DONE. SORRY IF I HAVE PANICKED YOU BUT WOULD RATHER NOT IGNORE YOUR POST. XXXX

laweaselmys · 17/12/2008 13:52

kkey21 - how often/fast does this happen?

I'm 27 wks and am feeling baby girl move around a lot - really quick movements (bouts of six or seven a second) and she's been awake and moving around a lot more often these last few days as well...

you've got me worried now.

sorkycake · 17/12/2008 13:52

friggin hell!

I'm ringing her now...

youknownothingofthecrunch · 17/12/2008 14:03

Sorky, are you ok? I hope that it's not what kkey had, but best to be sure.

Got my fingers crossed for you.

pucca · 17/12/2008 14:06

Sorky.... I had this when pg with ds, i got totally paranoid and was thinking he was fitting or something, it felt like a temor to me, ds is fine, not sure what it was, but just wanted to help put your mind at ease.

Btw i never had this with dd at all, thats why it freaked me out so much, infact i am sure i started a thread about it, i will try and find it now (ds is 2yo old lol).

Lulumama · 17/12/2008 14:08

true knots are v v v rare

but best to be checked out ,sorky, if you are concerned... x

PinkPoinsettias · 17/12/2008 14:10

actually, weirdly enough my dd was born with the cord around her shoulder and her oxygen supply was completely cut off during labour

pucca · 17/12/2008 14:13

Well i cannot find the thread, god knows, but i definately had this with my ds.

kkey21 · 17/12/2008 14:27

I do feel really bad for putting my post but i am so so lucky that my baby was born alive. And had i known this i would have definately gone in to be checked/monitored.

laweaselmys-the movements were very much like a fit, not just movements iykwim?
Both my children were fast/regular movers so don't panic. My movement was 'different'

Sorry sorky i do feel like ive panicked you but just get checked to be safe.

I actually had two scans one at 36wks and one at 37wks which didn't pick up knot even though they did the blood going through the cord-but if the 'movement/fits' had occured whilst i wet in to be monitored they would have known something wasn't quite right.

sorkycake · 17/12/2008 14:28

Have rang the day unit at the hospital and explained it to someone. They have asked me to go in this afternoon to have a 'heart trace done'.

I don't know what that is, but Dh is on his way home to take me.
Will let you know if anything arises..

OP posts:
sorkycake · 17/12/2008 14:31

She is extremely active, the most active one I've carried for sure. It happens more often than not when I lie on my side and I had thought maybe she was struggling to shift position, but what if her blood supply is being cut off by side-lying.

Anyway, thanks for the replies, MIL will be here soon to pick up my other children (who all have colds bless them)

OP posts:
dinny · 17/12/2008 14:34

hope all is OK, Sorky, think you are wise to get checked out as you have your other pregnancies to compare this one to

kkey21 · 17/12/2008 14:37

Sorky-i truely hope that it is all fine but thank god you took my advice. I am looking forward to reading later that is all absolutely perfect with you and your baby girl. I am sure it is as said above what Leo had is vvv rare but as i read your post i could not ignore it.

Right the cheeky biglittle 15week old needs a feed so i will watch out for you later... xxx

kkey21 · 17/12/2008 14:38

a heart trace is what i said (tracing)-basically they will monitor baby....and see movements...

xxx

scattercushion · 17/12/2008 14:45

hope it went well - sure it did, but just to reassure you further (and hopefully reiterate what they said at hosp) my dd did this in the womb - felt exactly like a fit or a weird spasm and the obstetrician said any movement is a good movement. Turned out she was fine!

NatalieJaneIsPregnantAgain · 17/12/2008 14:53

Can't stop, got to get DS1 from school but wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you Sorky, I had the same thing with DS2 and he 'clicked' when he did it, you could actually hear the click, just like when your knee clicks or whatever, he was obviously fine.

Will keep checking back for an update.
