The baby's really quietened down in the last day or so, and don't know if just moved position (am 27 weeks) or something's wrong. Before I run off to the doctor's (not easy in the middle of work) is there anything I can do to encourage it to kick ( currently downing cold water and eating jelly beans)

Icy cold water always did it for me.

Are you getting any movements at all?

belgo · 01/12/2008 11:23

Drink a cold drink - cola or lemonade - and lie down, on your left hand side and try and relax.

ABudafulSightWereHappyTonight · 01/12/2008 11:24

A large glass of ice cold water.

Shining a torch at your bump or playing a radio or some music up close to the bump are other suggestions I remember from my doctor!

Wallaroo · 01/12/2008 11:24

Cold/hot drink

Warm bath

Rub some cream into bump - always gets my baby moving at night!

Just stop for 5 minutes with your feet up (if you can)

poppy34 · 01/12/2008 11:24

chocolate and lieing down on sofa to rest.. i found she was more playful in evening and first thing in day - but not in afternoon (asleep)... it could be that baby is getting into slightly different movement pattern - I had worries at this point then went to hong kong and realised that baby was goig mad when i would usually be asleep.

don't forget that things gettting more cramped in there so you won't get the same type of movement that you do at 24 weeks or thereabouts

electra · 01/12/2008 11:24

Have something to eat. Do go to the doctor though, if you are worried - they will be able to check heart beat with a sonic aid. I hope all is well.

HeadFairy · 01/12/2008 11:25

Lie down or sit somewhere really quiet. I always thought I couldn't feel ds kicking when I was at work, but actually it's just that there was so much going on I didn't notice it. If after something sugary you lie or sit somewhere quiet and just empty your mind, you'll probably feel a kick or two.

Hero76 · 01/12/2008 11:26

i think some lower down, not as vigorous as day before but I was half-asleep this morning and don't know if I was dreaming them as was anxious about this before went to bed.
Am drinking cold water but can't lie down as in work and that wd not go down well....
just wondered if it could be due to the baby being in a different position, and so not feeling as much, or how worried i shd be.

Any movemetn yet Hero? If not, phone your midwife.

littleboyblue · 01/12/2008 12:25

Remember the baby's running out of room too, but like everyone else I find a super cold drink or a warm bath does it. Sometimes I jiggle belly about to wake him too.
If you are concerned, tell your boss your not feeling great and are concerned about the baby moving and get yourself to the hospital so they can pick up the heart beat.
That's another thing that get mine going. Really quiet for 2 days, and the minute I walk through those hospital doors, they're partying. (2ds's at different times, not a multiple pg)

georgiemum · 01/12/2008 12:26

Cold drink or chocolate usually does the trick.

Hero76 · 01/12/2008 12:44

felt two tiny kicks when i pressed hand against belly which made me feel better but usually by this time of day I wd have felt more. Didn't seem to fall for the wine gums/water trick.
Going to see how it goes for the next couple of hours and then if no more ring the midwife...it's not the most active of babies but was quiet yesterday too so was getting worried
last time i saw midwife she said it was transverse which dont know if makes better or worse

frasersmummy · 01/12/2008 13:02

hero

if cold/fizzy drinks or chocolate are not making your little one jump about then yes call your midwife
if your ittle one has been quiet since yesterday then dont leave it too long today..dont wont to freak you but better to over-react than under and be thinking what if I had done something sooner

That said if I remember rightly transverse means little one's feet could be kicking in the way rather than out and thats why you only feel it when you press really hard

good luck.. hope you are re-assured very soon

Hero76 · 01/12/2008 13:22

i'm actually quite worried now...how common are problems?
it's never been a superactive baby it's true...but last week was moving more.
if i can't get hold of my midwife is it possible just to turn up at hospital?

poppy34 · 01/12/2008 13:26

yes its possible to just turn up - they can take heart beat etc. Have you felt ten movements over the last day?

it could well be something to do with position of baby.

thenewme · 01/12/2008 13:28

I could get my baby to move by doing certain things but then I couldn't. Please phone and get checked.

poppy34, I am sorry but that is just not true. While room is getting tighter movements that change should always be checked out. You shouldn't expect less kicks as you go along.

frasersmummy · 01/12/2008 13:29

hero.. I'm really sorry I didnt mean to freak you .. honestly.. its still early days for loads of movements so it may just be a quiet day

If you cant get your midwife then yes you can just ship up at your local mat unit.. they can if they think there is a need do a heartbeat trace

this means they link you up to a monitor which shows the baby's heartbeat over the course of 20/30 mins and you count each movement in that period

once again I am reeally sory for freaking you ..

hope you get re-assured really soon

Call your mw and see if you can pop in or she can pop by with doppler just to check and put your mind at rest.
Orange juice or coke and chocolate usually wake mine up.

Hero76 · 01/12/2008 13:38

will do - good idea

frasersmummy · 01/12/2008 13:39

please come back and re-assure us all after you have heard the heartbeat hero

Hero76 · 01/12/2008 13:48

will do....and thanks for all your suggestions....

and the chocolate /relax trick didnt always work ( I now know that when my dd is asleep she is sparko so your little one could well be the same or lieing in an awkward way - I guess if they are transverse it is more than possible that movement is not so easy to feel through placenta etc)

babyignoramus · 01/12/2008 16:47

Mine goes bonkers if I drink pure orange juice. Maybe try that if you haven't already...?
