....did you have it with subsequent pregnancies?

Are some people just more 'prone' to it than others? And why do some poeple not get it at all?

It all just seems quite random really, so I'm wondering if there's any pattern to it. How does it work, and what determines whether you get it or not?

I had it worse second time around. It's awful though. Are you suffering now or worried you will again?

Reallytired · 16/11/2008 18:57

I had hideous morning sickness with my first pregnancy. Ie. I was sick 5 to 10 times a day for most of. This pregnancy I have only been physically sick 3 times in total and I am 17 weeks.

There are all kinds of theories why a woman might be sick with one pregnancy and not another. Some people say having a girl is more likely to make you sick, but then my first pregnancy produced a son.

I think for me stress if a factor. My first pregnancy was very stressful where as with this pregnancy life is very easy.

asdmumandteacher · 16/11/2008 18:58

Yes i have heard the ting about being more sick in pregnancy = girl. i have 2 boys and wasn't sick at all...felt a bit strange but that was it...apparantly due to excess oestrogen baby produces or something

Fiveplusbump · 16/11/2008 19:00

I never suffered badly with it in my previous six pregnancies ,but with this one I have spent 8 weeks with this one basically sick 24/7 .

policywonk · 16/11/2008 19:01

I was very sick both times. I've read that if you're very sick on the first pg, you're more likely to be very sick in subsequent ones - I guess some of us are just hyper-sensitive to the hormones. For other people, variables like stress, tiredness etc. might well be more significant.

asdmumandteacher · 16/11/2008 19:01

poor you - horrible

Twiga · 16/11/2008 19:08

Think it's really variable. I was sick up to around 25 weeks with dd the first time round but with ds only felt sick, was actually physically sick a lot less. This time round I've been pretty sick again but not as bad as the first time. However lucky woman that I am I always have recurrent ms from around 30/32 weeks having had a break in between - wander if in part this is due to the horrendous heartburn and the way my babies lie?! Have friend who has one of each and was so sick each time she ended up on iv's in hospital on number of occasions - wasn't as bad second time but puts a lot of this down to knowing how to manage things better. Think I would second her on this eg I know if I start getting low blood sugar/haven't eaten enought this will trigger so used to get dh to bring biscuit and tea in bed in mornings as soon as I woke to try and ease that a little - didn't solve but def helped.

PeppermintPatty · 16/11/2008 19:11

I suffered quite badly with morning sickness with DD till about 17 / 18 weeks.

It was awful, I was sick several times a day, in every location imagineable (on the street, in work, on the bus ). I was signed off work for a few weeks. It was awful.

Just wondering what my chances of getting it again with a second pregnancy.

Twiga · 16/11/2008 19:11

Should add and hope this doesn't sound too odd but actually found it easier being sick than feeling constantly naseaus the second time round. Being sick kinda relieves things for me a bit, don't like being sick but think coz for so long too, got used to it whereas feeling like I constantly had a bug just left me feeling wiped.

crokky · 16/11/2008 19:12

Horrendous for whole pg both times.

It's genetic IMO, my mum was then same.

asdmumandteacher · 16/11/2008 19:14

My mum was sick with all three of us (daughters) - i felt strange but not really sick both times and never threw up (sons)...i would be interested to know..i have used this to predict my friends babies and have been accurate a very large proportion of the time...we shall see have a friend due in 3 weeks and she has been sick a lot so i reckon its a girl from that...shall see

SparkyFartDust · 16/11/2008 19:15

I had hyperemesis with DD1 and horrible sickness- but not HM with DD2. Also had sickness with 2 MC's (not as bad as with DD's).

Apparenlty new research again emphasises the role blood sugar levels play

EBenes · 16/11/2008 19:15

"Horrendous for whole pg both times."

Snap. Managed with drugs till week 20 the second time, or I would not have been able to cope. At 37 weeks, am still sick but only once or twice a week.

janeite · 16/11/2008 19:20

Awful both times, to the point of hospitalisation both times - but mostly fine after the four month point. Both girls.

mummyloveslucy · 16/11/2008 19:21

My pregnancy with my daughter was horrendous, I was being sick every 20-30 mins fo 5 months. I was taken to hospital for 5 days, it was the worst experience of my life.
I can't believe we're TTC again.
I always said never again.
I worry that this time, there's no way I could cope with it while I have my daughter to look after. I couldn't look after myself last time.

PeppermintPatty · 16/11/2008 19:27

Everyone currently suffering - you have my sympathy, tis horrid

Mine definitely wasn't as bad as some of you have had. I managed to function ok most of the time, just about.

If you have had hyperemesis / was hospitalised, did if put you off getting pregnant again?

If you did get pregnant again how did you cope with looking after your DCs and feeling so ill? This is my biggest worry. At least last time I could sleep / rest when not in work.

artichokes · 16/11/2008 19:29

Mine was bad frist time and terrible second time.

Thankfully it was mainly over by 16 weeks both times.

I think I am prone to it, and for that reason I will think long and hard before having a third.

ceebee74 · 16/11/2008 19:32

First time round - although only sick about 4 times, had constant nausea, couldn't eat a thing and lost a stone in weight.

Second time around - constant nausea but eating actually eased it so ate constantly and lived off salty, savoury stuff, cheese and Foxes glacier mints.

Both boys!

No idea why some people suffer worse than others etc - have got friends who have breezed through 2 pgs without suffering at all, another friend who had nothing the first time and suffered badly second time around.

Maybe it is completely random??

asdmumandteacher · 16/11/2008 19:35

maybe i didn't have sickness cos i constantly ate and put on about 5 stone with each baby!lol!!

PeppermintPatty · 16/11/2008 19:36

It does seem to have an element of randomness to it doesn't it?

What part does blood sugar play in it Sparky?

With dd i was horribly sick 3 or 4 times ad ay, felt sick to the day she was born eurgh eurgh eurgh.. Then i had another pregnancy which i was again sick it but suffered a MC, i always felt that PG was a girl too.

This time I have been sick but nowhere near as bad as last time, nor have I felt as generally rough or tired and it's a Boy.

My Mum had the same experience - sick with the Girls and not so the Boys

LaTrucha · 16/11/2008 19:38

I had hyperemesis the first time round, all the way through.

We're TTC again soon. I'm crossing everything I don't get sick again.

I have had hyperemesis throughout all my 4 pregnancies. I already have 3 boys but am only 16 weeks with my 4th so dont know yet what this one is. I think that this one has been the worst of the lot but am convinced that is because I dont get much time to rest and dont get enough sleep either. Despite all the being sick and feeling tired and generally dreadful through all of them it has never put me off having anymore. I think its like the pain of childbirth, at the time you swear that you will never put yourself through this again but then your body cleverly forgets it all. Otherwise the world would be full of one child families!

joyfuleyes · 16/11/2008 19:42

I've had 5 pregnancies.

1st - hospitalised for hyperemesis 3 times, stopped working at 19 weeks, stopped puking only at delivery (girl).
2nd - absolutely fine (girl, second trimester mc).
3rd - nausea throughout, lost weight, vomiting 2-3 times a week, had steroids (boy).
4th - hyperemesis, far worse than 1st pregnancy, baby died at 18 weeks (boy), no steroids.
5th - nearly 12 weeks, been sick only 3 times, nausea constantly but I've managed to gain weight. Steroids again.

I'm getting to the point where I can't face the thought of another pregnancy, the steroids do help massively with the puking but not the general nausea. No other antiemetics have ever worked though.

My mum hasn't been sick at all in any of her pregnancies.
