Do u think cats can sense pregnancy?

My boyfriends cat all of a sudden is really loving towards me, he was a lovely cat anyway but now he always wants to lie on my belly and cuddle up with me. I read somewhere that animals can sense you are pregnant and that somebody had experienced her cat weeing in places she'd slept or on her clothes...the very day I read it the cat weed all over the bed and he never has accidents in the house. Anyone got any similar stories? Think it's true or not? xx

I have heard this too and would imagine it ws feasible give Cat's sense of smell. Even to me, my fanjo/wee smell different during pg, so I suppose to pets it would be amplified.

CandleQueen · 15/10/2008 23:51

My aunt's donkey wouldn't stop nudging my bump. Does this help you?

purpleflower · 15/10/2008 23:54

We only got my cat while I was pregnant but she was much more loving towards me than anyone else.

She also disappeared the night before I went into labour and returned 20 minutes after DD was born.

Peachy · 15/10/2008 23:59

yes

tis an oft quoted story here but when I was having ds1 my cat sensed something was wrong and alerted dh n time to get me to hospital (was unconscious from severe dehydration- hyperemesis- dh had understandably come in from work and assumed I was asleep)

A friend of mine sadly had to rehome all her cats as they became insanely jealous when she entered the third trimester - started weeing absolutely everywhere but especially on baby things and fighting

I have two cats - am only 8 wks PG. The two cats don't really get on, but seem to have buried the hatchet because they both want to be close to me all the time - one on my lap, one next to me on the sofa and, in bed (DP doesn't get a look in !), one on the pillow and one cuddled up under the duvet It will be interesting to see if things change throught the pregnancy.

twentynine · 16/10/2008 09:16

Mine did first time round - was VERY affectionate, which was a problem in the last trimester because every time I heard him groom himself I leaked milk.

LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 16/10/2008 09:18

my friends cat came to stay with us when I was pregnant with DS and always used to sleep curled up next to the bump.

previously he had never slept near either of us before.

LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 16/10/2008 09:19

I put it down to the bump being nice and warm! Was a very cold winter..

GYo · 16/10/2008 11:57

Mine wouldnt sit on my knee at all during the first trimester. She is usually very friendly. She is ok now though. Very affectionate again- probably do with the warmth! Im 18wks.

She is also hates sound of babies crying (came from bad home where large family didnt treat her well) if she hears it on TV she disappears! - So Im slightly worried what will happen after the birth, but I'd be devestated if she reacts badly since she is part of the family! I know its sounds odd!!

mel1981 · 19/10/2008 21:12

I was only talking to DH bout this the other day. I think they can sense it.
I have 3 cats 2 are very affectionate (& brother & sister) im only 7 weeks and all 3 keep fighting to sit on my lap ATM sometimes I have 2 on there at once LOL! But no one elses lap is good enough.
Its really sweet but with 2 DS's and 3 cats fighting for your attention at the same time it gets a bit hectic!!

ShowOfHands · 19/10/2008 21:15

I had two cats whilst pg. From very early on one of them would sit on my tummy at every available opportunity. The other would sit next to me and hiss at my belly.

When I went into labour they went out and caught rats for the first time ever and brought them up to the birth pool for me. It's the thought that counts I suppose.

TheInvisibleManDidIt · 19/10/2008 21:23

My older cat was very affectionate during both my pregnancies. Would purr and rub against my bump.

When my ds's were babies she come running to them if they cried, and meow and purr at them.

Even now if one of them's upset she comes and hugs them.

She's just turned 15 and really hope she's with us for a long while yet.

Evenstar · 20/10/2008 00:16

My dog would never leave me alone downstairs at bedtime when I was pregnant, he seemed to know very early. He would normally head upstairs with DH at bedtime, whilst I took things to the kitchen etc but always sat at the bottom of the stairs and waited during my pregnancies. He used to listen for the babies after they were born and if they cried would run up and down the stairs until I went up to them.

Ginni · 26/10/2008 15:50

At the start of my pregnancy I had three cats and one gave birth to a litter of 5 kittens pretty much around the time I concieved. One of my beloveds ran away, which I presumed was because she didn't like the kittens. She still visited me every day but didn't live here, and her attitude to me totally changed, she wouldn't let me go anywhere near her. The mother of the kittens reacted in a similar manner, giving me the cold shoulder, which I just put down to her being preoccupied with her babies. My other beloved got run over and passed on which was devastating, still is :-(. I didn't know I was pregnant for 3 months, and looking back I wonder if they were giving me the cold shoulder because of the bun in my oven.

The cats are all more affectionate to me now i'm in the third trimester, and they do occasionally wee in odd places in the house - I put a waterproof cover over the bed as i'm paranoid about them weeing there and runing the mattress but as yet they only seem to want to cuddle up to me on there.

I don't think the kittens have sensed i'm pregnant as they have never known me not be pregnant, but I think their mummy senses something - she didn't like it at first but now is getting used to it. I'm really curious to see how they react when my little baby is actually here.

cece · 26/10/2008 15:55

My cat never sits on my lap normally. She usually prefers DH. However, when pg she sits on my lap all the time. With DD especially she would lie on the bump and purr. DD would kick and move in reponse. Which would prompt more purring and so on....

OrmIrian · 26/10/2008 15:57

I don't know.

Our pub landlady could though. She told me I was pregnant about 2 weeks before I knew.

Jools1 · 26/10/2008 20:52

How amazing

One of my cats now won't leave my side at all (I'm 9wks) and the other one is a lot less aloof. I'll be really interested to see how they react to bump when it grows

MrsJamin · 26/10/2008 20:54

my cat weed in my labour bag twice, and also on the baby clothes I was getting ready. He never got over it once the baby arrived, weeing everywhere, so we had to give him up to the cats protection league I think he knew full well what was going on.

babyinbelly · 27/10/2008 10:53

I look after my mums cats while shes on holiday. The last time I looked after them I was preg (still am) and they were obsessed with me. They don't normally care about affection just as long as I give them their food but even the one that normally runs away from me wanted my attention. They were definately acting different to normal.

sunnygirl1412 · 27/10/2008 11:36

Evenstar - my cats were the same, especially when I was pregnant with ds1. If I nipped upstairs for a wee, they'd come and sit on the edge of the bath and watch me, if I didn't shut the door fast enough. It felt like they were keeping an eye on me.

SpookyButNice · 27/10/2008 11:42

I lived in the US when I was pregnant but on a visit home (suffering from severe hyperemesis and needing spoiling by my Mum), their oldest cat just wouldn't leave me alone. Everytime I sat or lay down, she snuggled up as close to my tummy as she could.

And she really wasn't a cuddles kind of cat normally, except with my Mum.

She definitely knew that something was different, and I didn't even have a bump at that point.

lecohen · 28/10/2008 15:39

Hiya,

My little dog DEF sensed my pregnancy both times and behaves very affectionately towards me. He is always loving but has been more licky and gentle and always avoids putting pressure on my tummy.

When we allow him in our bed, he likes to snuggle against my tummy - almost like I am spooning with him lol

kraftwerkkittie · 29/10/2008 09:46

no!! i have two cats and the one who is always the most affectionate towards me is as affectionate as always and shows absolutely no care or concern around the bump. i have to stop her from trying to bounce on it. maybe my cats are stupider than yer average...

flynn1984 · 29/10/2008 10:30

Well at first my cat wasn't too happy about me being pg would hiss at me everytime I went near him. Now he never leaves my side like last night he never sleeps at my side of the bed, but he slept at my tummy all last night...very strange

filthymindedSixSixSixen · 29/10/2008 10:33

mine definitely behaved differently to me. Really, really extra loving, kneading me and chewing my hair!

Now he is back to his usual aloof self.
