Do u think cats can sense pregnancy?

My boyfriends cat all of a sudden is really loving towards me, he was a lovely cat anyway but now he always wants to lie on my belly and cuddle up with me. I read somewhere that animals can sense you are pregnant and that somebody had experienced her cat weeing in places she'd slept or on her clothes...the very day I read it the cat weed all over the bed and he never has accidents in the house. Anyone got any similar stories? Think it's true or not? xx

god yes. we have two and one has never sat on our laps but about 1 month ago started sitting on my lap. got very touchy when i wanted to move. they both seem to favour me more than my other half at the mo too

how did your cats react after you gave birth out of interest?

wehaveallbeenthere · 02/11/2008 13:23

It depends. Cats (have always been around cats) will spray (males) if they sense a female cat around in heat. To establish a place to say "this is my territory so come over here girly and lets make kittens". Female and male cats will wee in odd places, the bed, your shoes (and they will poo too) if they are upset because they don't have any other way of letting you know.
Our cats become extra loving when they want to be fed...giving backrubs, grabbing at you as you walk by etc.
If you are an animal person though (I am..either an animal likes me a lot or doesn't like me a lot...no inbetween) they will express this more when I'm pregnant as my phermones change.
I've had butterflies land on me, a pup (he was a huge German Shepard) try to get into my apartment (second floor) and field mice do strange things all while I was pregnant.
Also a neighbor's cat that I was watching for her that usually hates everyone did a complete character turn around because I was pregnant.
In fact that is how I suspected I was pregnant. The neighbor returned and asked what I had done to her cat because Rogue never comes out (stray) to greet anyone and he literally wouldn't leave her alone now. So it was straight off for a pregnancy test for me and yep, I was expecting.

I have two cats. The more independent one, a spayed female, was very clingy during my pregnancy, and even watched me give birth. As if she was protective of me. The neutered male behaved no different when I was pregnant. Since the birth they were initially scared, then interested in the baby. Now that she's a toddler the female gives her a wide berth, the male one lets DD pat and play with her. In fact he's damned tolerant, she hasn't learned to be gentle with him yet.

i think it's true. both my cats suddenly took to wanting to lay on me all the time, kept sniffing my chest (obv later on in pg) sniffing, licking, nudging my bump.
and i was unfortunate enough to have them peeing where ever i had been, bed, bathroom, clothes etc.
i at first blamed the kitten, but it turns out it was both of them! despite the fact one was neutered.
thankfully they have now stopped the weeing, but they are barred from the bedroom now, but will not leave me alone. they sit outside the bedroom, sit in the bath with me, my young one even goes as far as to sitting on my bump in the bath!!! but they do give it funny looks if she kicks and they are resting there!and when i got strong BH's they would stare at me, then both try and sit on my bump and gently paw it?!
plus, i had a pg horse nudge me as well, and if poss give a knowing look.....

Think mine was a bit worried by it. He got cystitis (which apparently is often anxiety related) twice while I was pregnant.

same here.i have two cats and when i was pregnant.....which was almost constant for 2 years!..........they loved to curl up on me.infact one of them would sleep all night on my tummy!!!!

mags98 · 02/11/2008 16:39

My dog weed on the bed the other day too - very odd! She does occasionally wee in the kitchen, but has never even been on the bed at all before as far as I know - at least not when I've been there, she certainly doesn't sleep there!

I thought it was to do with her being spayed a few weeks ago, but I just wonder now.

The other dog, an older boy who had the snip years ago doesn't seem bothered at all.

flamingtoaster · 02/11/2008 17:34

My friend's dog knew she was pregnant before she did - he began to walk right by her side on walks and was very protective if any other dogs came near.

My little dog def sensed what was going on. He weed on me twice when preg and never at any other time.

ciaobella19 · 03/11/2008 16:34

im 5 days late and for a week my cat has been lying on my stomach every time he is near me... hopefully this is a sign ......... lol

pamelat · 04/11/2008 09:56

Ahh. I hadn't even thought of this. We got our (female) cat when I was about 8 weeks pregnant and she basically lay on me for the next 7 months. I have always had affectionate cats so felt this was normal.

Now that DD is here (9 months old) she isnt as interested in lying on me but will go up and purr and rub against DD, but scarper if DD tries to grab her.

I think its affected the cats relationship with my DH though because she has never bothered to lie on him or go to him, other than to play fight.

pamelat · 04/11/2008 09:56

Also my cat used to paddle my dressing gown and suck it .. ?!

timewaster · 04/11/2008 11:51

My cat disappeared when I was pg

emma1977 · 04/11/2008 16:52

My cat started insisting on sleeping next to me IN our bed, snuggled up against my bump while I was pregnant. She was also very fond of any baby things we purchased and insisted in trying them all out.

When we brought ds back from the hospital and put him in the moses basket, she kept circling it and growling until she realised that it wasn't another cat. Whenever I BF him, she would sit on the other knee and wave her tail across his face. She also groomed him from time to time.

Sadly she went missing the day he cut his first tooth and started crawling at 7 months.

My cat (an indoor neutered tom) has been really strange since the day of my positive test. He has always been anti-social anyway, but was even more so those first few weeks. I took about 5 pg tests (don't ask) and they were all on a little shelf in the bathroom. Said cat kept going in there and knocking them off onto the floor, whilst ignoring all other items on shelf. Spent about 6 weeks sitting on the stairs with his back to everyone only coming down to be fed. He then had a total change of character at 20 weeks or so, when he suddenly became really affectionate and wanted to sit on my lap all the time. (doing that kneading thing too, which he had never done before) Then these past few weeks, he has been following me around the house, has to be within eyeshot of me wherever i am, and is sleeping outside the bedroom door.

Wonder what he will be like when bubs arrives next week.. He has been my baby for 10 years, so i am sure he will feel his nose is put out of joint somewhat. Aw.

So in my case, I reckon they definitely sense pregnancy.. I have heard that dogs are also pretty good at detecting when their owners are about to go into labour.. seen loads of stories about that online. Dogs acting up, crying, circling and barking. Must be the change in hormones.

Rumpel · 05/11/2008 11:08

My cats (used to have 5 down to 3) instantly know when I am pregnant. The female is more affectionate and my big old ginger tom (who was my first and is the eldest) is super duper affectionate. I had to have 1 of mine put down when I was pregnant with my daughter as he went doolally and started doing the toilet in the house and showing signs of OCD - he was always a bit bonkers though poor thing.

Sure they can train dogs now to tell when a human has bladder cancer by sniffing their urine. One of the surveys the dog kept insisting that this man had bladder cancer and the researchers couldn't find anything - they tested his kidneys and he had kidney cancer! Animals are amazing.

imoscarsmum · 05/11/2008 15:29

My cat always tried to crawl onto my tummy when I was pregnant. He isn't phased a bit by our 7 week old DD, though has tried to get into all of her baby things (cot, bouncer etc). We have a cat net and luckily he won;t go near her moses basket when she's in it. her play gym is another matter though, he loves snuggling up on it and we keep having to move him....we may have to give it to him and buy another one.....
