Did anyone just 'Know' they were pregnant?

I have heard people say that they just knew they were pregnant long before the positive pregnancy test.

Has anyone ever felt like this and if so how soon?

"Also the walls of the uterus start thickening to aid implantation."

That's what happens normally in the second half of the cycle in case you get pregnant.

tinkerbelle, You are so right, when I had my ectopic 3 years ago I knew something wasn't right.

When I found out I was pregnant I felt numb and never really got excited even though it was a few weeks later when I found out it was ectopic.

I think subconsiously I knew that I wasn't going to get my baby so I didn't become attached.

I was freaking out refusing to test because I knew when I did it would be over in a week. Mum worked it out on Easter Sunday and dragged me to the GP on Tuesday morning. I started bleeding the following Tuesday at 5pm. I've always known I would have a miscarriage and lose a baby, in a way that I almost thought that was normal for people.

Apparently it's a question that's come up on the SANDS forum and people generally do know something is going to go wrong this time.

I think that's a direct life from wikipedia. A number of articles in the Journal of Human Reproduction have covered this in depth - you can find them on PubMed. Mother's intuition aside, there is no hCG production till after implantation.

blueshoes · 16/10/2008 10:10

Yes, my understanding is that hormonal changes related to pregnancy only occur after implantation.

That is not to say mother's intuition pre-hormonal response does not exist - though I would not be a candidate for mother's instinct. If anything, my instinct was wrong and I would not be pregnant even though I thought I was. Pre-menstrual symptoms are often mistaken for pregnancy symptoms.

I wonder how many of those on this thread who Knew they were pregnant conceived quickly and easily. Has anyone TTC-ed without success or any 'bingo' instinct for 6 months or more suddenly get the 'jackpot' instinct soon after conception and well before menses when they did eventually fall pregnant?

Second time round I conceived Christmas Day and didn't finish my champagne on New Year's Eve because I just KNEW I was pregnant. No signs, just a feeling

janinlondon · 16/10/2008 10:17

Have absolutely no argument that people have an intuitively feel for it - I am lacking in intuition completely, but am sure it does exist for lots of women.

TinkerBellesMum · 16/10/2008 11:05

We've always gotten pregnant very quickly (two contraception accidents have shown he is very fertile and we've always gotten pregnant as soon as we start to talk about it) but I've always known what would happen (miscarriage, NN death and a premature delivery, I'm pretty sure this one won't last out this year) and the sex. Of my four pregnancies only two were tried for, one was a pill accident so I wasn't expecting it and this one was while I was waiting for my period so I could go on the jab - was only going to have one so I could get some things sorted out in the meantime. I wasn't showing any pregnancy symptoms this time, I suspected it but wasn't keeping track of my cycle (which was random anyway as I'm still breastfeeding) so wasn't sure how long it had been.

nappyaddict · 16/10/2008 17:07

Me. I hadn't had a period for 3 months. Hadn't bothered to take a pregnancy test in those 3 months even though technically I could have been pregnant. I always had irregular cycles so wasn't worried. One day just decided to do a test out of the blue. When I went for an early scan it showed when I did the test I wasn't even 2 weeks post conception (so 4 weeks gone). If I had been having regular periods when I did the test I wouldn't have even been late yet. I didn't have any symptoms that made me decide to do a test I just suddenly though I was pregnant. Spooky.

bikerunski · 17/10/2008 17:09

No, but once I did know I absolutely knew that it was a boy. DS is now nearly 6 weeks old .

flourybaps · 17/10/2008 17:12

I knew, did the test the day before period was due and before I did the test I said to dp, its going to be positive you knnow, and it was. Dont know how I knew, just did..

Tee2072 · 19/10/2008 19:36

I wasn't positive, but about 2 days post ovulation I got these really mild cramps, felt like menstrual cramps and I remember wondering if THIS COULD BE IT!! (been trying for over a year).

Then the day before my period was due had cramps again and shrug and went 'oh well, maybe next month'. And then I was late. And my boobs and nips started to hurt. And then I knew!

superkat · 19/10/2008 19:50

Yes, both times I knew within days - I had a very odd feeling in my pelvis. But it then took a further 2 weeks to get pregnancy tests to agree!!

superkat · 19/10/2008 19:50

I knew if I had sex 'that' night, I would conceive.
And I was right!

Evenstar · 20/10/2008 00:18

I knew the night they were conceived with all 3, can't explain it it was just a feeling. With DD I had much worse nausea and actually started feeling sick before my period was late.

mumnosbest · 20/10/2008 00:47

Yes 3 times! Memoo like you I new but wasn't excited with the middle one which I miscarried. It's like your body prepares you.

MrsGokWan · 20/10/2008 07:54

I didn't know with any of my 3. I have problems conceiving and have early M/C's. I have been activly TTC for 10 years to get my 3 DC's with 5+ M/C's a year.

But the creepy thing is my lovely FIL just KNEW when I was pregnant with my 3 and told me to take a test each time
