I had a bad bleed when I was pregnant with Dd at about 5 or 6 weeks during the wait between scans the disney store had a sale on and had the nicest pram suits reduced, I promised myself if everything was ok I'd buy them. Everythying was fine and I bought them when I was about eight weeks. I don't think I bought anything else really till much later on though.

Bicnod · 29/09/2008 20:46

We've got our 12 week scan on 14th october. If everything's fine we're going to buy 'Dogger' by Shirley Hughes, as it was my favourite book when I was little

Not going to buy anything else until after Christmas (due April 26th).

lauraloola · 29/09/2008 21:04

I had a scan at 7 weeks and started buying a few bits then. I really started buying after my 12 week scan. I really stocked up on everything - Clothes in various ages, nappies in various sizes, wet wipes, shampoo etc. I am so glad I did now as we only have to buy milk powder and not having to buy nappies is a real saving.

The big things were bought later on as they do take up a lot of space.

I would definitely recommend stocking on the day to day items if you think money is going to be tight and you have some space to put it all. It is so much fun buying all the little outfits and nappies, enjoy x

I spent a lot of time with catalogues picking what I might like, rather than actually buying early! MIL would get us wipes, cotton wool, bath bubbles etc in with her shopping from time to time so we built up a stock of those things but none of it really until after the 20 week scan.

It's up to you though - can't hurt to buy a few bits

thisisyesterday · 29/09/2008 21:08

I found it hard to put off, but I did. until after my 20 week scan.

tbh there are so many lovely tyhings out there, that if you buy stuff now you;ll see more before baby is born and want to buy that too.

dan39 · 29/09/2008 21:12

U am 22 weeks and all I have bought is some cotton wool pads (and I don't really know what they are for!!!)

we had a misc in April and gor pg again in May, hence the hesitation. But to be honest I am ready now, its more dh who is wanting to wait. I might go ahead and get things like baby blankets and maybe even some clothes...dh suggested waititng til Jan sales but I am due early feb so a bit worried that might be too late. Nappies seem like a great idea to stockpile, but I am thinking of using a combination of washable and disposable, so not sure which yet (as babies don't nec like all of the washable ones.)

Books a lovely idea!

diddle · 29/09/2008 21:21

I wouldnt buy anything until after 24 weeks with my ds's because we had 2 miscarriages before them arriving in the world. I wanted to know that if anything happened to our baby that it was past a viable age.

broodymom · 29/09/2008 21:39

I have seen so many offers on nappies at the moment, after the 12 week scan (everything going well) i am def going to start stocking up on essentials.
We have cleared a cuboard out for when we start to stock up i am dying inside to jump up and down i'm so happy at being pg, i'm just holding out for my scan before i can relax and show how i really feel

I didn't buy anything until about 35 weeks. It was a pack of vests in Tesco

Simplysally · 29/09/2008 21:45

I bought pregnancy vitamins . I got bits and pieces as I went along. My best buy was a maternity swimsuit or the disposable breastpads as I needed them from 5mo onwards.

Baby things I began to buy in the Spring before dd was born (June baby) but my Mum had bought fair few things in the post-Xmas sales before that.

hedgepig · 30/09/2008 07:11

it's a bit obvious but I didn't think of this with my 1st child. Bear in mind when your baby will be born, the clothes now are winter clothes but you LO will be arriving in the summer so if you buy newborn, & 0-3 month clothes now they will be too hot for the summer,

fymandbean · 30/09/2008 07:24

36 weeks - then I bought everything!

Seabright · 30/09/2008 09:01

Join freecycle www.freecycle.com then you have to buy very little as you can get lots for free!

MrsMattie · 30/09/2008 09:03

I started buying a few bits from around 28 weeks into my first pregnancy. This time around I'm already 32 weeks and haven't bought a single thing yet! 'Baby shopping' has lost it's shine for me .

istinkhavingaboyoragirl · 30/09/2008 09:28

i bought a white sleepsuit on my 30th bday when i was 6 and a half weeks pregnant.
then a humphrey teddy after my 12 weeks scan.
after my 20 wk scan a white fluffy bear hat and winnie the pooh booties
@ 23 weeks we bought cot, pics for room, cot sheets, buggy.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 30/09/2008 09:34

I don't really like shopping, so the whole 'baby shopping' thing wasn't an excitement for me. Didn't get anything IIRC until well after my one and only scan first time round (20 weeks).

I was lucky to get loads of lovely 2nd hand clothes from friends and family, so didn't have to buy too much. We also got given a cotbed so just had to buy a mattress.

Second time round I'm 6 months pg and thinking I should have a rummage in the loft before my belly grows any bigger and risks getting stuck in the hatch

bikerunski · 30/09/2008 10:22

Travel system at 16 weeks. Bargain too good to refuse from collegue of DHs.

NatalieJaneIsPregnantAgain · 30/09/2008 10:27

I started on the clothes after the 20 week scan, and have just in the last couple of days ordered the buggy/car seat/etc, the nursery furniture, the bedding and curtains and light shade etc. I am 26 and a half weeks now. Ordered it now because a lot of it has 6-7 weeks wait on delivery, and I don't want to get to xmas (one week before EDD) and find that we have nothing here!

Have done a lot better than other pregnancies, DS1 we were ready for him to come at about 15 weeks PFB?? DS2 we had all the stuff at about 22 weeks, but none of it ready in his room till the weekend before my due date!

kingrolo · 30/09/2008 10:44

Managed not to buy anything until after 20 week scan - other than a pair of tiny socks at 12 weeks!

Really glad I didn't buy too much too early because I've been suprised how many friends and colleagues have loaned / donated / bought stuff, inc. clothes, cot, baby monitor, breast pump (eugh!) and steriliser.

Top tip - do your boring research well in advance on car seats and prams then you can just order online a couple of weeks before the baby is due and put your (by then very swollen) feet up.

madmarriedNika · 30/09/2008 12:27

At 25 weeks we went to a great second-hand shop a bought a few basic bits, e.g. cot sheets, blankets, sleepsuits, steam steriliser, baby monitor. I bought a pair of soft leather shoes (0-6 months size) when I was 27 weeks pregnant. At 28 weeks we made a big list of what was essential and asked around for hand-me-downs (had a couple of friends with older kids who'd already offered)- one very kind friend ended up donating us their cot, pram, loads of clothes, bedding, car seat etc etc. BUT we did not arrange to collect any of these until I was at full-term (past 37 wks).

I'm VERY glad we didn't get all this stuff before then as DS ended up being born at 30wks and was in SCBU for 8 weeks. If I'd been coming home every day to an empty-but-ready nursery while he was fighting for his life in hospital it would have broken my heart. So IMO don't get all the big things into the house until you're nearly at your due date (you can of course have bought/organised them before then).
Good luck xx

Simplysally · 30/09/2008 12:28

Remember that if you don't mind your baby wearing inappropriately-themed garments out of season, you can get vests/baby gros very cheaply after Christmas etc. Hence my dd proudly wore a Winnie the Pooh Christmas vest in June. A vest is a vest but outer clothes would be different.

You really don't need to buy many outer clothes though as often you get so many tiny dresses (no experience of boy babies) that most go unworn unless you strictly rotate garments around.

georgimama · 30/09/2008 12:46

My DS was mostly in vest, babygro and cardigan until about 4 months old - you don't need "clothes" as such, people will buy them for you anyway.

BabyBaby123 · 30/09/2008 12:52

i'm not going to rush this time - first one I think I started after 12 week scan, 2nd after 20 week, this one I'm in no hurry and am not buying a lot - you realise as you have subsequent babies that a lot of the stuff you buy is utterly pointless and what seemed a bargain at the time in fact isn't when the time comes!! Wipes/nappies etc are ALWAYS on special offer, pointless 'stocking' up - babies can be allergic to certain brands so you may find you are left with stuff you can't even use. HTH.

BabyBaby123 · 30/09/2008 12:53

agree about clothes - outfits look really silly the first time you put them on a newborn = particularly pink dresses/tights etc

sunshine185 · 30/09/2008 13:07

31 weeks and have bought some socks!
