Prams you can go jogging with?

Hi everyone. Sorry if this is a really silly question but I'm really missing my running now I am 32 weeks and just too enormous!

I was wondering for after the baby is born, if there are any prams you could go running with? And whether this is a good idea anyway for the baby? I have seen some people doing this but not sure if it is a good thing or not. It would only be round Wandsworth Common so not exactly a rough terrain but all the same I want to do the right thing!! Obviously I could go to a gym with a creche and run on a treadmill but there's something about a lovley run round the common that helps the old state of mind!

thanks in advance for any advice or opinions!

i bought a BabyJogger from USA (but i got it from a wee shop in Putney, came over from NI specially).
Fabbo - 3 wheeler, which you can push along with just your wee finger!
It's quite big - and lasted right through 2 kids until then no longer needed it.
Great on rough terain, or shingle etc or the beach.

Upwind · 04/09/2008 14:12

A knowledgable friend told me that it is a great idea and push chairs which are suitable for jogging are good value second hand - but it is only advisable when they are at least six months.

whiteorchid · 04/09/2008 14:18

Baby Joggers have a good reputation. Prob worth posting a message on the Runner's World forums for other recommendations.

I thought about buying one, but in the end, I'm glad I didn't. Decent running buggies tend to be quite cumbersome (with huge wheels), so you really need another buggy for day-to-day stuff (like getting into shops, cars etc). I bought a breast pump instead and went running while DH fed the baby. Good excuse to have some proper me-time!

hannah001 · 04/09/2008 14:21

I've heard that you shouldn't go jogging til they're 6 months too - but I just heard that on another forum - anyone know if it's true or not?

millicent1000 · 04/09/2008 16:03

Brilliant - thanks everyone that's really helpful.
I'm interested in the 6 month thing too, hadn't heard that before.

I don't know how true it is - can ask my friend but there should be some more authoritative source of info! I am guessing that the logic is that jogging might be too jarring for tiny babies? It would obviously depend on the surface, though....

millicent1000 · 04/09/2008 17:41

Oh yes please Upwind, that would be great if you could ask her.

Another runner here (hence nickname)... surely the 6 month thing applies to all buggies - that babies need to be strong enough to sit up in a buggy rather than lie flat in a pram/pramette?

tizwas · 04/09/2008 19:15

I have just bought a new pram/buggy after my husband jogged our last one into the ground with our two sons. It was a NIPPER three wheeler and excellent for running on pavements and rougher ground. The babies could lie in it from earlier than 6 months as it tilts back quite a long way. It was the lightest one around at the time (5 years ago) and is still hard to beat on weight. Rubbish for shopping with though as no room in basket bit and no swivel wheel. We have replaced it with a Britax Vigour that is light and has fixed and swivel wheel. Not a bad price either.

Upwind · 04/09/2008 19:40

millicent - she based her 6 month belief on the reccomendations with the jogger buggy she bought.

hannah001 · 04/09/2008 20:09

Upwind - ta for checking for us

conkertree · 04/09/2008 21:12

we have a schwinn free runner - bought it from america and bil stays there so he took it over for us when visiting so saved on delivery, but it was only about £80 so we have it just for running really, and a different buggy for other things.

it does have big wheels and so looks very slightly odd but we love it - trained for london marathon with it (well up until runs that were longer than 2 hours as ds got a bit bored).

We used it from about 3 - 4 months cause it does lie almost flat and was fairly well cushioned, and nobody had said not to.

stillsuchamess · 05/09/2008 00:27

I have a collection of baby joggers, single one 6 years old, a double, & a SN one. I think the advice in this country is 6months but in the US it is 8wk plus, seems like it is due to how much the seat reclines. I used it from about 12 weeks with a 'snuzzler' fleecy insert. I didn't run on very bumpy ground though when they were little, did/ do use them for all terain travel and can't fault them. Bit bulky for going round the shops but I hate shopping anyway! My SIL has an InStep with large wheels that reclines a long way but don't know how light it is to steer when running.

stroppyshopper · 05/09/2008 00:46

We just had ours broken by an airline on a flight back to the UK from the US . We had to buy a new one, got a Baby Jogger one, they seemed to the be the mid-range priced ones here (we only found three brands to choose from here, anyway, and the pricier one was so incredibly expensive!)

If you are going to spend more than 200 quid, then seriously consider a round-trip ticket to NYC for a weekend and buy one there. Loads more choice and they are so much less expensive, you'll pay for more than half of your plane fare in what you save.

As for the baby jogger, it's OK. Not as good as the one we had that was broken, though.

The one to go for is a BOB and it's only sold in the U.S.

dinkystinky · 05/09/2008 08:54

There are certainly plenty you can go jogging with - but you need to wait until your pelvic floor muscles are back to full strength post birth before doing it (and certainly dont push yourself) as otherwise you can end up doing them damage (know a woman who did this and ended up with urinary incontinence as a result). That's why they say wait 6 months (or longer if you're still breastfeeding) before you start jogging.

millicent1000 · 05/09/2008 10:43

Makes sense to not start pushing yourself too early! Urinary incontinence NOT a desired effect!!

Thanks for all the info on the different types of prams available - that's really helpful. I'll look into all of these. Hoorah - can't wait to start getting out running again! Although of course it's going to be a good few months!

afternoon

you can start jogging before 6 months, but you should do your pelvic floor EVERY DAY whether you think you need to or not. Jogging won't give you pelvic incontinence, but a weak pelvic floor will! If you're still having problems with your pelvic floor you won't want to run anyway. If you're breastfeeding you should be careful because your ligaments may still be softened, so you should watch out for ankles/knees, go steady and stick to a nice smooth terrain.

Buy a tip-top sports bra (try the Goddess Comfort sports bra from Figleaves which is comfortable if breastfeeding) and make sure you've got a really good pair of trainers that you've bought from a proper sports shop (not high street fashion sports shop if you see what I mean).

Many buggies just haven't been tested so have no evidence regarding whether you can jog with them. I ran with a Phil & Ted's from a few weeks post birth. You want to look for suspension of some sort, a front wheel you can fix, good head support, pneumatic tyres, big wheels and make sure you've got a long wrist strap so that if you were to trip you'd stay attached to the pram but wouldn't pull it over!! A brake is quite useful too. BOB strollers are supposed to be really good, have spoken to a few running mums/clients who have these but quite hard to find in the UK.

Have lots of fun, I was so pleased to start running again first time around, looking forward to it again this time!

rowergirl · 05/09/2008 13:44

I ran with the Urban Mountain buggy fairly shortly after birth - the little fella was in the carry cot bit lying flat, and tbh, I wasn't going terribly fast so there was v. little jarring (no more than an inexperienced learner buggy driver in any case). This is the only buggy we have used and is great for town/ country/ beach but a little cumbersome for public transport.

I think I saw a photo of the newsreader Sophie Rayworth running along the Thames with a double Mountain Buggy - that's hardcore!

pop1973 · 05/09/2008 13:45

Hi rather than running, why don't you join a walking mums group instead to begin with. If there isn't one near you, then put the word around and start one.

Dragonbutter · 05/09/2008 13:48

we got a BOB single jogger on ebay a few years ago, and we have a double instep safari jogger from the states.
it's mostly DH who takes them running but it's a way of keeping them all entertained on a saturday morning so i can have a lie in.

SushiMama · 05/09/2008 13:55

Hi millicent,

You've got some good advice here. So I just wanted to commiserate with you. I too was really missing the running when I was pregnant, and was the one thing I was looking forward to after birth. Was shocked when they told me at the hospital to wait 3 months! I think they were even more shocked that I had asked though!

Anyway it's been 4 months and I haven't really been running yet. The thought of any permanent damage scares me. But I'm in Wandsworth so if you fancy any fast walks or runs sometime give me a shout!

millicent1000 · 05/09/2008 15:46

Hi SushiMama - yes I'm really chuffed with all this helpful advice!

Would definitely like to take you up on the offer of a Wandsworth fast walk/run - sounds like a great idea!

me again

for the sake of doing some promo here, why don't you try Buggyfit on Wandsworth Common or Clapham Common - the one on Clapham Common comes particularly recommended! Try www.buggyfit.co.uk, power walking class with lots of strength exercises and a good way to meet people. Very well trained instructors () so won't make you do anything that's not suitable/appropriate/safe.

Hi upwind, I was wondering which shop it was in putney that you bought your jogging pram from.. I can find lots of nice schwinn ones on the net, but would like to see one, maybe even try one(!) before I buy...
