Consultant Choice at C&W - Nick Wales, Keith Duncan or Gubby Ayida?

Can anyone help me make this decision? I didn't expect to have a choice as I've been a bit slow off the mark, but now the descision has stumped me!
Anyone got any experience of these consultants?
Thanks!

Hi there!
I just was Keith Duncan last week for my first apointment and he seems nice, although a bit overworked and busy, but he took his time for my appointment and I didn't feel rushed. He is very matter of fact which is good. I can't compare as I have not seen any other consultants and I also will choose ( if al goes well) to go to Portland Hosp. where he is a consultant as well, but for his apointments I would need to travel to C&W. I'm seeing him again this Friday as T
there is a significant discrepancy between my estimated dates and scan dates. It's my first time, so I'm probably not the most informed source of info. Good luck!

Gubby Ayida delivered my ds 2.5 years ago. She hadn't been my named consultant through my pregnancy so I didn't get the chance to get to know her but she was called in to perform an emergency ventouse as ds was stuck and in great distress and she was absolutely brilliant. Apparently she is renowned for being fab at assisted deliveries should you need one... i came away without even a hint of a stitch. A friend had previously had a bad experience with her dd1 and went to Gubby for her dd2 and was also very happy.

I'm 37w and under Keith Duncan - really like him and v.pleased with my choice. He was particularly good when we discussed my last delivery and birth plan - came away feeling very reassured. I like the fact he does all the scans too so I have seen nobody else throughout my pregnancy. I know others on mumsnet have been pleased too (search for his name, you will find a few). I saw him briefly with my #1 right at the end (I was MW led for #1) for some advice and it was that that made me choose him this time round.
I also have a friend who has been very happy and had two good deliveries with Nick Wales - NW and KD both cover each other in times of holiday, emergency etc.

i've only ever heard amazing things about gubby ayida and keith duncan. guy thorpe beeston is pretty friggin impressive too.

eandz · 01/09/2008 17:11

unfortunately i didn't get any of the above. i didn't get mark lupton either or zoe penn. so if anyone knows the doctors, by process of elimination you know who i have and i suggest not to go near that can of worms.

Bubbaluv · 01/09/2008 17:22

Thanks everyone,
Last time I only had 1 choice so was easy, but he's not available this time round so I'm back to the drawing board. Anyway, I'm off to see Keith Duncan tomorrow, so I guess I'll just go with him if he seems nice enough.
There are at least 2 others eandz! Hmm who do you have???

bubbaluv

who did you have last time?

i've recently changed mine to someone i feel more comfortable with. but i feel bad naming and shaming since i think my attitude could have also played a part in my lack of confidence.

skiingone · 01/09/2008 17:35

Bubaluv - when are you due?

Bubbaluv · 01/09/2008 19:52

Last time I was with Roger Marwood - he was excellent. Am due in April.

slinkiemalinki · 01/09/2008 20:23

I heard Roger Marwood only takes one woman a month so guess you have to be pretty quick - I hear he is absolutely great but a bit of a Harley St greyhair which wasn't really what I was after.
Hope your appointment goes well.
eandz I still haven't figured out who you are now with. But glad it is going better!

eandz · 01/09/2008 20:31

Really slinkie ? i'll give you his initials:
H.a.R. but i have one of his nicer partners so i feel a little bit better.

slinkiemalinki · 01/09/2008 20:55

No, I mean the new guy!

eandz · 01/09/2008 21:24

lupton covers for har

pearlmummy · 01/09/2008 22:01

I have had Keith Duncan for two pregnancies which were very complicated and I thought he was really great so my vote would definitely be for him. Very nice manner and trusted him 100%. All this was on NHS.

pearlmummy · 01/09/2008 22:03

also does a great scar should you need c section!! be interested to know how you get on

Bubbaluv · 11/09/2008 11:37

The neat scar sealed it for me PearlMummy! Am booked in with KD. Seems really nice and I like the fact that he does the scans at the same time as your appointments and also that he does a scan at EVERY appointment. I'm a scan junkie!

Glad it went well Bubbaluv, all the best for your pregnancy

crackerqueen · 22/09/2008 14:45

Hi everyone, thanks for your help last month when I needed to make a decision on the Kensington Wing. I have made an appointment to see KD next week, the "great scar" swung it! If I'm having an elective caesarean when will I be asked to go in? I've heard it's 37 weeks, some people say it depends on the size of your baby.
The Kensington Wing looks good but we weren't able to see any of the rooms, have to wait till the builders are gone in a couple of weeks. Anything you can tell me about it? Hope you're all well. Isn't heartburn just the pits!

Bubbaluv · 22/09/2008 14:58

Cracker - KD told me 38 - 39 weeks so long as all is progressing normally.

BTW, I had my last baby in the Kensington Wing and it was great, but that was pre-refurb. I saw one of the new rooms though (when I went in for my last check-up) and it looked good too (although it faced into the internal atruim rather than out onto Fulham road as my room did last time). The staff there were fantastic, the food was surprisingly good and they gave my husband a mattress so he could stay with me the whole time. They now have a nursery as well, so if you want a few hours of baby-free sleep they will look after your little one for you. They did this before, but they used to have them lined up behind the reception desk, which was actually quite sweet.
Let me know if you have other questions - will try to help.

Thanks Bubbaluv! I have got another question for you actually! Following a private birth, how is an NHS health visitor organised to see you at home and check on the baby's progress every so often? Do the Ken Wing staff organise this for you or will I need to contact someone after the birth? Honestly, the things that pop into your mind at 3 in the morning! How old is your little one now? Did KD deliver him/her? How did you find him? Age? Manner? Thanks so much Bubbaluv, guess I should really do some work now!

Bubbaluv · 23/09/2008 12:44

The KW staff will contact your GP and they will organise it. It's probably worth contatcing them youself aswell though, espescially if you know when you're going in.
DS has just turned 1 so DC 2 is coming along rather sooner than planned, but hey ho!
DS was delivered by a Roger Marwood who was brilliant, but is away this time, but all reports on KD seem to be excellent.
I've only met himonce, but he was very friendly and calm and easy to talk to. He's (I guess) mid 40s?? When are you due?

SlinkieM · 23/09/2008 13:56

Hi-just had my son at the K wing, very good experience and by the time you deliver will be completed - we could see the building work over the weekend and looks v impressive.
The staff will arrange for your HV and community MWs to visit as if you gave birth on the NHS.
Keith Duncan was my consultant and although he didn't deliver me (for starters he was out of the country but in any event I turned up at the labour ward with ten minutes to spare so his partner couldn't make it either-the MWs did it) but could not fault the quality of antenatal care or the experience overall.
I guess you won't have the same problem with an el-cs but you've chosen a really good doctor.
I thought the K wing had improved a lot since I had my daughter in 06 - better food, more MW cover at night, nice nursery where my son spent the night inbetween feeds - was very pleased with my experience overall.

crackerqueen · 23/09/2008 14:21

So many questions answered! Congratulations Bubbaluv and thank you so much SlinkieM! I'm due end of February and it's my first. Thanks again!

Bubbaluv · 23/09/2008 14:30

Both my DH and I felt it was the best money we'd spent in a vey long time. Worth every penny, especially as you'll be in there for a while!
