Am I mad for not having the 16 weeks bloods done - 3rd pregnancy and aged 33?

I didn't with DD1 or DD2 as I find them terrifying, you know, if they came back with high odds of downs etc, I really don't know if I would go ahead with an Amnio (friend's baby died in utero after having amnio),

Am I not the only one to go ahead and not have these tests done?

i did not and I'm older than you

nancy75 · 26/08/2008 23:05

didnt even get offered blood tests, i thought it was a scan?

roquefortlover · 26/08/2008 23:06

I didn't have them for ds1 (I was 31) or for ds2 (I was 37) for same reason - knew i would not have an amnio so felt there was no point in having bloods done.

pgwithnumber3 · 26/08/2008 23:06

nancy, where do you live?

Phew, glad I am not the only one. I don't know anyone in real life who hasn't.

london, i had a scan at 13 weeks for downs i think (its only 3 yrs ago and i cant remember properly, god help me!)

TheFallenMadonna · 26/08/2008 23:10

No, I didn't either.

Clary · 26/08/2008 23:11

No you are not.

FWIW I cannot see the point unless you would have an amnio and consider termination.

I had em with DS2 (I was 35) but I reall tdon't know why and I cannot even remember what the result was. Certainly took no notice of it.

UniversallyChallenged · 26/08/2008 23:16

I didnt have them done was 34 with ds1 and 35 with ds2.

Was in my 20s with the dds and didnt then either

cece · 26/08/2008 23:18

I am 41 and ttc but will not have the tests done if I am lucky enough to get pg. Mainly because I would not have an amnio or a termination, so to me they are pointless.

PortAndLemon · 26/08/2008 23:18

I've had babies at 32 and 35 and haven't even been offered the blood tests (my PCT introduced them just after I'd passed the critical point in my pregnancy with DD last year).

pgwithnumber3 · 26/08/2008 23:21

Good luck cece = truly hope you are successful.

Thanks everyone, feel a bit better now. Was worrying that I could be tempting fate a third time - after two healthy DDs, was thinking maybe third time, I should have the tests.

Erm, 33 is quite young, no? Or is it just me that thinks that?

hf128219 · 26/08/2008 23:21

I am 38 - dd 7 months old (first baby). I did not have them. I would not have had an amnio or termination either. Don't worry

pgwithnumber3 · 26/08/2008 23:22

It is not considered "old" to have children but not "young" either lucicle! I put the age though because I knew people would ask straight away how old I was!

halogen · 26/08/2008 23:25

Heh! I think at 33 you should not worry about it unless you have a good reason to. And no, I don't think you are mad!

hf128219 · 26/08/2008 23:25

It's a funny thing, age! When I was born my mum was 38 - MW scrawled Elderly Prima Gravida on her folder. Mine didn't - how things change!

cece · 26/08/2008 23:25

Thanks pgwithnumber3 - I actually had a high risk result with dc3 and that sort of made up my mind. Just caused lots of upset and anguish, hence my decision for the next one. Although DH doesn't know yet, not sure he will approve, but I will wait till I am pg first!!!

pgwithnumber3 · 26/08/2008 23:27

So you are trying to conceive DC4 cece? Sorry for being nosy?

OP posts:
LackaDAISYcal · 26/08/2008 23:29

after two MCs I chose not to have any tests done with DD (I was 38 when she was born) as the results wouldn't have affected the outcome of the pregnancy.

I'm now pregnant again with DC3 will deliver less than three months short of my 40th birthday and chose not to have the tests done again, basically for the same reasons.

I did have them done with DS when I was (only ) 33 for no other reason than the MW told me triple blood test this week and I just offered up my arm without even thinking about the possible consequences.

cece · 26/08/2008 23:32

Sadly I mc DD2 at 18 weeks so this would be child 3/4 iyswim.

notcitrus · 26/08/2008 23:58

I'm 33 and didn't have them done, nor the nuchal scan (the scan because I was too late unless I'd hugely insisted, bloods I don't think they do routinely in my area, but again too late unless I'd really made a fuss).

I'd talked to MrNC and we'd decided if Squirmy has Down's we'll just cope - we'd given up on a baby when I found I was 14 weeks pregnant, so wouldn't want to risk an amnio.

Did have nice sonographer at 23 weeks who explained that if a baby has Down's, there's a 50% chance they could tell at that point, and Squirmy doesn't have any of the visible signs - which means he's got only my age-related risk (1 in 479), and if he does have it or a similar condition, he's unlikely to have the more serious medical problems that can go with it.

I didn't with any of mine, I was 34 when I had my last.

lou031205 · 27/08/2008 08:19

No, you haven't been foolish. I refused mine last week. No point if no action, and midwife said routine scans will identify most issues any way.
