Thought I'd miscarried - still bleeding but pregnancy test positive??

Hi,
I'm new here and just wanted a bit of advice. I'm in early pregnancy and started bleeding on Tuesday which was at around 6 weeks. I bled a fair amount, started off as dark blood but turned to red. It's not pouring out but there is a fair amount like a period, felt a bit crampy on the first day but that's all. I just resigned myself to the fact that it's a miscarraige, then yesterday (Thursday) the bleeding slowed right down and then in the evening I suddenly felt I might still be pregnant, just a feeling and peeing quite a lot. Well today (Fri) I've done a pregnancy test which is still positive (but I've heard they can be for a while after pregnancy loss) so now I'm not sure, I'm still bleeding today. I have to speak to the doc again on Mon with regard to either a preg test (she doesn't know i've done this one today) or an early scan.
I didn't plan on being pregnant at all, infact it was a complete shock and still not sure how it happened as we were very careful. I have had four children already, eldest daughter is 12 1/2, son is 10, we lost our second gorgeous son when he was four (2002) from a brain tumour, and we have a beautiful 10 month old baby girl.
I'm quite chilled about it as at 38!! I've been round the block a few times.
I miscarried in 2003 when we were trying for a baby, but didn't know until my 12 week scan when there was no heartbeat, I'd had a bit of spotting earlier that week but nothing significant.
Anyway that's enough from me - any advice??
Sarah xx

Hi,
Docs rang back and they can't get me in for a scan until Friday .
I've just done another test (I know they should only be done in the morning) and it's still faintly positive, it's a week tonight since I started to bleed - could it still be positive this long after if I've miscarrried or do you think the doc could be right??
I get my tests so cheap from ebay that I've decided to get another 3 tests so that I can keep testing up until Friday, and if they turn negative I probably won't bother with the ordeal of a scan.

I'd talk to the doc anyway - they might want to do a scan to make sure it's all gone. Although, thinking about it, I think the test going negative may prove that, anyway.

Or, if you are in London or can travel there easily, there is a drop-in, no referral needed, EPU at St Thomas Hospital near Waterloo if you feel up to it.

Sarahx2005 · 21/02/2005 16:03

Hi,
I'm in the Midlands near Leicester so I'm nowhere near London, but thanks for the tip.

Hi,
I got up this morning feeling quite pregnant, and for the first time it's all getting to me - the not knowing.
So I phoned the doctor and asked if I could have a blood test and he agreed it might be a good way of seeing what's going on.
So I've had that done (it hurt this time - it doesn't usually) and hopefully I will get the results this evening - failing that (please God they come tonight) it will be in the morning.

Sarah, where are you booked in for your scan?I live near to you & have always gone to the EPAU at Leicester General.I have referred myself there in the past when my Dr wouldn't refer me,so if you aren't already booked in there,it may be worth ringing them.

I hope your bloods come back with a nice healthy level in the meantime.I know how horrible it is to bleed & not know what is going on.
Good Luck

Sarahx2005 · 22/02/2005 23:24

Hi Mirage,
I have a scanned booked for Friday at my local hospital, the general is quite a long way for me especially with a 10 month old in tow.
Hopefully the blood test will give us more of an indication of whats going on and hopefully also prepare me for whatever the scan says on Friday.
Thanks for the advice.

Good luck Sarah, the waiting must be horrible. i hope everything is ok for you, it does sound promising.

I have bled in early pg every time (now on my third). With dd I poured blood and passed material (sorry if a bit graphic) and I was told I had almost certainly miscarried. I had a scan and dd was safe in there. I may have lost a twin, but was fortunate to have dd. I hope your little one is safe too.

DecafArabica · 23/02/2005 00:45

Good luck Sarah and I hope you soon find out what's going on. Thinking of you.

Sarahx2005 · 23/02/2005 15:18

Hi Everyone,
I've finally had the results from the doctor 3pm!!!
Anyway it's not good news which doesn't surprise me really, the hormone levels in my blood are the same as the blood test I had over 2 weeks ago so that says it all really.
The doctor says to still go for my scan just to see if it's all ok, now I will worry that there's something wrong, although common sense tells me that it was a miscarraige and nothing more sinister but won't relax until after the scan on Friday.
Love Sarah

sarah, i'm really sorry. The waiting & uncertainty must have been/be unbearable. you sound like you've had more than your fair share recently. I hope the scan on friday at least goes smoothly and there's nothing sinister to worry about. i'm saying all this really clumsily. I'm sorry. Just thinking of you & what a hard time you're having & hope it picks up for you. All the bestxxx

RTKangaMummy · 23/02/2005 16:47

oh Sarah

hushh · 23/02/2005 17:11

I'm 6 almost 7 weeks now & am spotting (dark blood) - it is worrying,I've phoned the docs but they didn't sound very worried. I have a docs appt next Friday to be booked in. Think I've learnt more on here than my own GP would tell me. I'm just trying to stay positive. Hugs Sarahx

Mirage · 23/02/2005 17:21

Oh Sarah,I'm so sorry to hear your news.
Hugs to you.

Hulababy · 23/02/2005 17:23

So sorry Sarah

Sarahx2005 · 23/02/2005 17:24

hushh hang on in there, I had bleeding from 9 weeks on and off for about a month with Isobel who is now 10 months! I was really worried as I'd just suffered a missed miscarraige before her. I lost some little clots too but when I had the scan there she was bouncing about! I had a little bruise or blood clot behind my placenta and it was all ok.

i'm sorry to hear your sad news and will be thinking of you tomorrow, hope all goes well.

Mirage · 23/02/2005 17:26

Hushh,I'm sorry to hear that you are worried too.

I hope I'm not scaring you unneccesarily, but have your Drs arranged blood tests or a scan for you to find out what is causing the spotting? It is just that dark red / brown spotting can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy & that is something that needs urgent treatment.I had one 2 years ago & prune juice type bleeding at 6wks was the only symptom I had.I was lucky in that my Drs picked up on it & treated me in time.

Again,I don't want to scare you,but any sort of bleeding needs checking out.

Sarahx2005 · 23/02/2005 17:46

I have to say, I think it was far better in my Mum's day. She said you didn't even go to the doctors until you had missed at least TWO periods else they would have laughed at you!
It would get rid of all the stress and worry that we put ourselves through. Many women had early miscarraiges without even knowing about it! What bliss!
I think we know far too soon these days, I wouldn't have gone through any of this, I would have just assumed that I'd had a late period.
I know that modern technology is very good and saves lives especially in the case of ectopics etc, but I've found waiting for blood tests results and then worrying about the results far worse!
I was very lucky as my first three pregnancies were plain sailing (had 1 tiny spot of blood at 12 weeks with my second), but I suppose it's inevitable that as you get older things get more complicated.
Love to all - Sarah xx
