I had a glass of wine last night with friends and a small one tonight. I would never have done it with DD1 as too worried but did with DD2 and won't worry about having a couple of glasses of wine a week with DC3. I really can't see what harm it can do.

The Government Guidelines are so strict because there are some people out there who don't know the difference between having a glass of wine or a bottle. The Government decided that no alcohol was an easier/safer guideline for dimwits to follow.

Oh I really want a glass of wine now - and seeing as I have just had to kill a mouse my cooking fat just brought in and 'played' with I believe I have earned it! Occasional glasses of wine are not going to do any harm. Although maybe I should have half a stout (for the iron content)...

Craved cider when pregnant. Gave in on Saturdays

bigmouth when I was pg and had hyperemesis I was admitted for rehydration to the general gynae ward. There were lots of "maturer" ladies in with various conditions, and practically all of them clucked round me and told me how much they recommended guinness/stout. (never fancied it myself though, prefer wine)

chip shop's bloody 13 miles from here.

and i like fried prawns and fried chicken, being the Southerner i am. also beignets and donuts or a cold morning - for breakfast, with icing sugar and a hot cup of coffee.

Are you hungry expat? Iirc you sometimes get a bit peckish around this time of night!

If you're not hungry you are certainly making my mouth water.

When I visited family in the US we had funnel cake covered with icing sugar.

Dh Nan told me when she was pregnant in 1930's and 40's it was practically compulsory to drink stout when pg! Fil seems to have come to no harm But I cannot stand the stuff either - Although an ice cold Murphy's in when in Cork once was pretty nice

It was indeed very hot and humid in the early summer of 2003. I was stuck in hospital with hyperemesis so much of the weather passed me by...remember being v hot though.

You must have been pg with your dd1 at roughly the same time I was expat. Mine was born early in 2004.

I'm hungry, but this kid never lets me eat.

If I do, especially in the evening, he makes me puke or keeps me up till 2 or 3AM feeling like it's all still sitting in my stomach going nowhere and like I'll retch the second I lie back on the pillow.

I think overall I've lost weight around the rest of my body, he's made me so ill for so long.

Mmmm, funnel cake with powdered sugar.

Dunkin' Donuts. Papa and I used to go there on Saturday mornings when I was a teen and get a dozen donuts for the family and coffees for him and me. Such excellent coffee.

I could murder a burrito from Chipotle.

DD1 was born in June, 2003.

And after that, we had such a happy summer, one of the happiest in all my life - picnics, tasty ales and wines, windows open in the evening, DH and I sharing a fag on the balcony (used to smoke then), pushing DD1 to the beach or jumping in the car and heading to all these places around.

Good weather makes such a difference to one's enjoyment of life.

HUGE, veiny shrimp. Bought by the kilo from the boats in the Little Vietnam area at the port.

Marinated in pineapple juice, soy sauce, garlic and oil.

BBQd with corn on the cob.

Oooooo.

expat, you are really making my mouth water! I usually love king prawns but even if they were safe to eat during pg, I just couldn't stomach one.

Lol we should rename the thread "expat's food fantasies!"

I remember well a year ago feeling so sick and uncomfortable and dreaming of food like you seem to be now.

When dd2 was born (almost a year ago) the hospital (bizarrely for the NHS) had an free and accessible snack trolley. I was there every five minutes for cookies and brownies etc to make up for the months of nausea and yukkiness.

i had DH bring me a curry from my fav balti house when i had DD2. and a bottle of ice cold beer.

when i had DD1, my mother arrived and brought me some homemade chicken flautas with salsa verde. man, i was in heaven!

Hot cooked prawns (afaik) are "allowed" in pg, even in this country - unless the "rules" have changed again. I did eat quite a few prawns, but was careful. (wouldn't have bought them at the beach/snack van in a layby for example).

Ohh, really onepiece, I didn't know that, I still go one what the guidelines were when I was pg 6 years ago with DD1!

i don't like how prawns are cooked here.

so i cook them myself.

they're okay during pregnancy if you prepared them yourself to your specifications.

you can get some pretty good langoustines here in Scotland.

i have been preparing shrimp since i was knee high to a bullfrog, i know what i'm doing.

and mostly, they're going to be dipped in my beer batter or coconut batter and deep fried in my fryer for 5 minutes on 170.

trust me, they're cooked to the max!

mmm. i'd like some jambalaya. or some gumbo.

i think we'll head back next year over easter and eat and shop till we drop.

Report
pgwithnumber3 · 09/08/2008 22:41

Came you come down to the North West and cook me some of those Scottish Langoustines please expat?

Report
expatinscotland · 09/08/2008 22:42

they need to be nice and fresh, pg.

that's always the secret.

mmmmm.

i'd also like a bowl of mussels, with crusty baguette and plenty of red wine.

i believe mussels might be out.

we can get them fresh from a restaurant near enough to here, but i've not fancied them much.
