I don't have hyperemesis (my mum did though) but I felt sick and sometimes was throughout my first pregnancy. I found icepops invaluable as well as being relatively cheap, as Gaviscon did nothing for me and I was a bit worried about possible side effects of the doctor's other prescription. Tips about having fluid frequently in small amounts make a lot of sense to me as well. I'm now 15 weeks into the second pregnancy and trying to remember what worked best in the first.

Hope you find some way through, I know how wretched it can be and being bored doesn't help.

Seeline · 04/08/2008 10:34

I had it badly with my first pregancy, you really have my sympathy. Mine lasted from about 7 weeks to 18 weeks. I too felt sick all the time and was throwing up 6-8 times a day, throughout the day and night. I just couldn't be bothered to get out of bed, it was too much effort to keep running upstairs to the loo! I'd forgotten about the sense fo smell thing actually. My DH survived the time on microwave meals as I couldn't stand the cooking smells - that way it was over quicker. I survived on rice Krispies. When I started the same way with my second pregnancy I was straight down the GPs and forced her to prescribe me medication. The thought of going through all that again with a toddler was just too much. They really worked - ?phenagen I think. Best of luck - it will get better.

TheMadHouse · 04/08/2008 12:45

Ok Medication. If you are actually sick then anything in tablet form is not going to work. Hence me having injections.

You can get stematil (sp) suppositirys and also bucastem, which are bucal tablets and melt under the tougne and go straght in to the bllod sttream.

There are a number of anti-emetics they can try. They tend not to prescribe Odanzatron (Zoflot) due to the cost, but to some people it works.

I also tried steriods to no avail.

The medication wont actually stop the nausea feeling just the actual sickness

stretchmarkqueen · 04/08/2008 15:09

Hi, you have my sympathy it's horrid isn't it? My mum said she had HG and knows exactly how I feel, but then in the next breath she told me how difficult it was to go work!! I tried lots of different anti sickness tabs, but the only ones that worked were the suppositories, (up yer bum!). I then was prescribed some liquid nutrition, cartons of drink, that I slowly sipped every now and then. It wasn't great, but hey!!

I also wished the pregnancy would end.

xx

lilymolly - you have my sympathy. I had this with both pgs and I thought about dying a lot as the suffering was too much. Sorry to say that with DD, it lasted the entire pg, but not bedridden in 3rd trimester. I am so sorry for you suffering like this. It is the reason why I won't be having any more children, even though I love them both to bits and think they are amazing.

PInkyminkyohnooo · 04/08/2008 22:08

Loads of sympathy. I've had HG twice very sicky this PG but not actually HG (DH disagrees).

Ice lollies.

Try to move about a bit, sitting still can feel worse.

Eat everything seaparately- one food item at a time in very small amounts, and eat the most easily digested thing first- eg fruit.

Cyclizine worked quite well for me, but I think you need to find what works for you as everyone seems to be different.

Tiny sips of water- just wet your mouth, but keep at it all day.

Good luck

babylove123 · 05/08/2008 11:57

Hi,

I send my sympathy your way. I had hyperemesis from week 5 - week 16 and from week 11 had to be put on medication because i hadn't eaten anything for 3 weeks and was bed bound. I couldnt move, DP wld have to almost carry me to the loo for a wee. I ended up in hospital with de-hydration too. I was being sick at least 8 times a day, anywhere up to 15 and with no food in me, it was pure bile (sorry if tmi). I suffered with a bleeding throat and mouth from it not to mention the migraines and stomach cramps.

I seriously felt like it was never going to end and i was utterly beside myself in tears and felt depressed with it all. I couldnt understand why my body wasnt coping when a million other pregnant women out there were fine. No matter how many ppl told me that it would disappear, it didnt help me at the time.

However im now 24 weeks and i promise you, it does get better. Slowly, granted but it does. I've only just started drinking milk again and there are many foods that i still cannot stand talking about let alone seeing and eating but you learn to deal with it. I came off my meds at 17 weeks and i coped using ginger root tablets and small doses of food often (like "normal" morning sickness). I still have bad days but 85% of the time is good.

I hope you sail through it soon!

I haven't read all but you have my sympathy.

I got by on Complan meal replacement drinks and chocolate ice-cream. I could only take cold or uncooked things.

I was distraught (until signed off work, which I remained as had HG al the way through) too and couldn't move much at all.

I AM considering number two now, so either I'm round the twist or it's worth it.

p.s. accupuncture didn't work for me.

mamabea · 05/08/2008 21:14

Lilymolly- thinking of you.

had hyperemesis in first pregnancy 4wks-20

wks and will never forget (no matter how I

try) the misery.

was hospitalised ++, everything smelt

toxic...even water, and the sickness oh Awful,

awful.

I found water hard to manage but could

sometimes manage tiny sips of lemon juice

diluted with some water and ++ sugar added.

Don't feel guilty for staying in bed, you

will have very little energy and the nausea

is often dibilitating. Very tough on you and

partner esp

as you have a little one to look after.

However, your partner will have to manage the

household for you both, that's just how it

will have to be for now.

I remember being so excited, enraptured when

finding out I was pregnant and then

completley floored by the illness. Utterly

overwhelmed by the nausea. I began to wonder

if I could continue with the pregnancy,

whether the baby or I would survive it. I

found that the scans really helped me to

cope- seeing baby put me in touch with my

body again and gave me strength and

motivation to remain positive.

Ride it out, be very, very kind to yourself. Sleep when you can

Each day that passes is a day closer to it subsiding.

mamabea · 05/08/2008 21:45

by the way hyperemesis org are no longer I'm afraid...funding issues!

also, been thinking about the boredom issue. My mum went to local toy shop and bought me a load of quick 'arty' games like, friendship bracelet making kit/ emroidery kit e.t.c. I was really suspect about it (being a woman in her mid 30's) but they really helped pass 10 mins here and there. Did them in bed and maybe you could involve your DD if up to it.

If not up to 'doing' then I found visualising 'a better place' useful (opening myself up for ridicule here). For example, when feeling wretched and very nauseous I would imagine myself on a cold, clear glazier breathing in cold, crisp air... safe from the real world (which was far too smelly!). I am not usually given to meditation e.t.c but doing this helped me escape and gave some relief, even if it were for a brief moment.

PInkyminkyohnooo · 05/08/2008 22:04

oh no ridicule,mamabea- I think imagination/selfhypnosis, whatever you want to call it is very important in these situations. I used similar techniques- I had learnt it from having bad migraines.
Also the cyclizine also helped me in that it sort of knocks you out a bit.
LaTrucha- it is worth it- I'm pg with number 3!

becaroo · 06/08/2008 10:19

Bananas...very high in potassium. Also ice lollies..lemonade ones are good.

5 ml of liquid every 15 mins will keep you hydrated.

Good luck x

lilymolly · 06/08/2008 11:05

just been to see midwife- you know I felt so much better just getting out and about.
no ketones in urine but bp is very low 80/60
and I have lost nearly 10 lbs
just a matter of sitting it out.

the smell in my house is vile though- my cleaner is coming today so hopefully she will wash away any smells
Dont have stinky house btw just super sensitive nose

PInkyminkyohnooo · 06/08/2008 20:30

That sounds like good news, lillymolly- you must be getting the fluids down.

I know what you mean about the house. I managed better at it when I was in an office because the usual home food smells etc. were not there.

Second time I was at home and I had to keep the doors and windows open the whole time.

It's mad how much weight you lose so quickly. I lost btwo stone in the first four months.

It is better to get out and moving if you can- it sounds crazy but it really works.

matildax · 06/08/2008 20:52

lilymolly, i had this with my dd2, it was completely awful, and noone really understood how badly i felt!! i was in hospital twice, to be put on a drip. it really was the most depressing time. i really do sympathize. i used to puke on entering a supermarket, and wherever i went i had to take my orange bowl with me.
i remember vividly at about 18 weeks, thinking i could not go on with this pregnancy, and looked up diy abortions on the net. i feel ashamed to admit that, but it was so awful, i felt i would die, and was so desperate for some relief. i couldnt stand the 'smell' of my oldest daughter or dp either!!
i was prescribed cyclizine, and some other tablet (cant remember name) and had to take them throughout the whole pregnancy!!
i look at dd2 now and wonder, how we ever got through it, but you do.
i just hope she never makes me as sick when she hits the terrible teenage years!! lol
I couldnt cook, and ate very little, but was addicted to ice cubes!! used to make dp trawl all the supermarkets in town to get a certain brand of ice!! lol i was sure i could taste the difference in some of them!!
YOU WILL GET THROUGH THIS!!
feel free to chat on here to us, and i,aswell as the other ladies who went through this, will help you if possible. one funny thing i remember at the darkest time was
i used to lay in bed eyes shut in the dark singing this shitty folk song, over and over again!!! i even sang it to dd2 when she was born to see if she reacted to it!!! lol.
take it easy. xx

lilymolly · 07/08/2008 20:04

Good news- Feeling a bit better today
Ate toast, crumpet some oven chips and a bit of mash pot!!!

Hope I am getting over the worst x

good to hear that lilymolly, all the best with the rest of your (hopefully) sick free pregnancy.

lilymolly · 10/08/2008 16:13

Well started to feel better, no puking, but my god I have NO ENERGY

My muscles are all aching. It takes all my energy just to have a shower, then I have to take to my bed again.

Took a trip to retail park today, dp drove, went to borders looked at books for dd, had hot chocolate, and I felt wretched.
Came home and now back in bed.

Does this still sound pregnancy related?
