My sister is 25 weeks pregnant with her 2nd child and has just phoned me very distressed because of heartburn. I live accross the road so went to see her a shes really suffering I've given her some antacid tablets and told her to drink milk and left her in the bath with her DH supervising. She ate a peach and the pain came on very suddenly she says it's across her chest and into her back it has lessened slightly with the tablets.

I've told her if it hasn't eased in 30 mins I'd ring NHS direct. But thought I'd see what you mums netters had to say ref remedies or if it's something more serious

She was sick shortly after the pain set in

heartburn can be that bad in pregnancy, imo. Keeping upright, rather than lying down is recommended. Also, I would avoid anything that sets off a particularly bad bout ( a no-brainer, I know)

Blocky · 11/07/2008 22:16

Heartburn - bane of my pregnancies. Very cold milk - or Gaviscon

LuckySalem · 11/07/2008 22:17

I had this all the time with DD. I swore by a glass of milk (we went through at least a pint a day)

Soda water and other fizzy drinks worked for me- I got away with putting a few drops of lime cordial but that makes it worse for some people. Hot drinks made it worse, as did fruit juice etc. Loads of gaviscon, several times a day.

sweetkitty · 11/07/2008 22:24

Gaviscon or Zantac (Zantac is brilliant you cna get it prescibed by a GP too) you can get both from a supermarket

nancy75 · 11/07/2008 22:26

fizzy drinks made it worse for me, gaviscon, milk or plain yoghurt worked the best

expatinscotland · 11/07/2008 22:26

Natural yoghurt rather than milk.

She needs to get a prescription for Gaviscon because it's so expensive to buy OTC.

Or Zantac.

I already sleep propped on two pillows and it had little effect now and I'm 24 weeks.

sounds silly, but i found DH rubbing my back encouraging burps helped me!! oh and tonnes of milk and rennie tablets

nancy75 · 11/07/2008 22:30

think i would speak to doc before taking zantac, i was given it by doc and it made me ill

DustyTV · 11/07/2008 22:30

Peppermint cordial mixed with some boiled water and left to cool. Sip as and when needed. I used to make a big pint of it before I went to bed, It works wonders, you can sip it as you need it.

very cooling and refreshing.

Also propping herself up when in bed/laying down helps a lot.

Hope your sister feels better soon.

Thanks all, am taking notes.

She seems much calmer now and I've proped her up with lots of pillows and milk and pepermint cordial and strict instructions not to eat peaches for the rest of the pregnancy! LOL

I had it with both my boys but not the girl. Is this going to be another boy I wonder?

DanJARMouse · 11/07/2008 22:43

i only had with my son, not my girls!

nancy75 · 11/07/2008 22:43

StarlightMcKenzie, i was fine when i went back to gaviscon, tbh it could have been just a stomach bug, but you know what its like when you're pregnant, no matter how safe anybody says something is if you have even the smallest reaction you go in to mega panic!

feetheart · 11/07/2008 22:48

Don't keep your hopes up for a boy, I had it through both pregnancies and had one of each!!
Rennies the first time, Gaviscon the second - NEVER want to see either again, EVER

miamla · 11/07/2008 22:54

i've found that chewing a vitamin C tablet helps...hope she feels lots better soon

sweetkitty · 11/07/2008 23:12

I'm on my third girl and have had it bad all 3 times.

expatinscotland · 11/07/2008 23:27

i'm on my third child, two girls and this one is a boy.

and i've had dire heartburn with all three.

one had a lot of hair at birth, and the other was bald as a coot, so there's another myth blown to bits.

nancy75 · 11/07/2008 23:29

same expat, my dd was a little baldy, the heartburn i had she should have had hair down to her feet!

LiegeAndLief · 12/07/2008 08:51

How is your sister today babalon? Just wanted to mention that a heartburn type pain as bad as your sister's can be a symptom of pre-eclampsia. If the heartburn remedies don't seem to be working, and she isn't getting the burning sensation in her throat she should really get herself to a mw or doctor and get her bp checked.

Much much more likely to be heartburn, but always best to get checked out! Hope she is feeling better today

amidaiwish · 12/07/2008 08:56

heartburn in pregnancy made me cry it was so bad.

i found eating papaya really helped
plus don't drink tea, coffee or too much water
milky drinks, yoghurt, peppermint tea, fennel tea helped.

Gaviscon is safe to take as it just forms a barrier to the acid.
