Wanting to get pregnant as soon as possible ! 3 weeks post birth!! Am i crazy

I’m exactly 3 weeks post birth- had a natural labour and then had to have an emergency c-section right at the end. Been needing sex the last few days (does that mean ovulation has returned?). Not breastfeeding (formula feeding) and wanting to have another baby as soon as possible. Have had unprotected sex this morning for the first time. I did start birth control (noriday) on Thursday last week, taken Thursday, Friday stopped Saturday started Sunday and stopped since then. Not planning on starting it again and want to see what happens. Am I crazy for wanting to get pregnant again ?? I want my children close in age.

You will face major risks if you get pregnant so soon after a Caesarian section. Please, be sensible. You have a child to consider.

ExOptimist · 05/10/2026 22:59

I knew someone who deliberately got pregnant almost immediately after birth, her children were 10 months apart. I thought she was mad but she was very happy with having 2 so close in age. But she had not had a c section.

MCF86 · 05/10/2026 23:01

wanting to seems crazy to me, I absolutely hated being pregnant. It makes me queasy just thinking about it even now and my "baby" is 7! I definitely would have found it very difficult going through it while already having a young baby to deal with. But apparently some people actually like it l, so I suppose wanting it isn't actually crazy.
Doing it, with all the associate risks, on the other hand..

Well, but also ... I had a second-degree tear and it was horrible for about ten days, and then it was rapidly ok. I'm 3 months postpartum and I must get someone to check it's healed ok, but it's not painful. I'm a single mum so sex wasn't on the cards, but I think if no one had told me not to, it wouldn't have occurred to me it'd be a totally stupid idea. I just wouldn't personally have fancied it at 3 weeks. But at 6 weeks, yes, probably I'd have assumed it was all fine.

I guess each to their own there. It's not a race, but equally it's fine to if you feel fine. By the time I had sex at 10/14 days I'd been out shopping, supermarket, seen friends, and with my second, been down several slides, hosted friends for dinner and chased round a toddler. I was truly fine!

THisbackwithavengeance · 05/10/2026 23:09

I always feel sorry for young babies who are effectively pushed away at 10 months when their mums get a new little baby to play with. Get a bloody grip OP.

Plus you’ll be seriously judged in the playground when you have non twin siblings in the same year group at school. And rightly so.

dontgiveafigso · 05/10/2026 23:10

You sound irrational and irresponsible too. Try and pull yourself together and focus on being a parent to the child you have now before going for a second. It isn’t a game.

YY! It's so variable - some people feel fine (and that's ok), and others really don't.

It's not a betrayal of people who feel awful to acknowledge that others really do feel ok.

But, equally, the OP needs to know it's medically risky even if she feels fine.

And I agree with a PP - it could so easily be the newborn bubble. Newborns are so easy! Same with recovery. A few weeks ago I assumed everything was fine; I now have twinges to check out, and so do most of my NCT group. It's probably just our babies getting bigger and requiring more heavy lifting, but it's worth second-guessing this stuff.

Shock Oh don't be so silly.

If my children attended a school where anyone made this sort of judgement, I would think hard about removing them, as would many parents. It sounds like a very toxic and immature atmosphere.

The TTC is risky, but it's ok to have sex if she feels upto it. Just needs to be protected!

Even if it was not risky, it's daft to commit to 2 when you barely know what parenting is like. Newborn phase (whether loved or loathed) is completely different from the rest of parenting. It's not even vaguely similar. In some ways (in hindsight) we probably don't really know what we are letting ourselves in for until they are at least 3.

MaggieBsBoat · 05/10/2026 23:35

After a c section this is plain stupidity.
Also needing sex? No. No you don’t. It’s your hormones. Masturbate with all the energy you’ve got.
wait to see what having one child is like. Once the exhaustion kicks in, then start trying.

this.

Ileithyia · 05/10/2026 23:40

Are you crazy? Yes. You’re horny because you’re ovulating because you’re not breastfeeding. You should wait at least 2 years to allow your body to heal fully from this pregnancy, especially as you’ve had a c-section. The advice to wait at least 6 weeks before having sex is also to allow your uterus (and in your case abdominal surgery wound) to heal.

Having babies this close together may seem cute but it’s actually very hard work. Sure there will be those who’ve done it and will tell you it’s fine, Irish twins etc etc, but in truth it’s irresponsible to be actively trying this soon.

Listen to medical advice and take your birth control.

I absolutely agree, but I think there's no reason to make someone feel awful for not knowing.

Many, many people have another baby before their first is three.

And many people feel time pressure, too.

I am deeply unsure about the OP (where are you, OP?), but this thread is unnecessarily nasty.

hcee19 · 05/10/2026 23:46

You are told 6 wks for a reason. A, C section is major abdominal surgery, you need time to heal, for internal & external stitches, they can tear or reopen. Your uterus needs time to shrink back to its normal size . The area inside the uterus where the placenta was attached, needs time to heal. You could also suffer a severe uterine or pelvic infection. Having penetrative sex too soon can also introduce bacteria . You could make yourself very unwell, you could even hemorrhage. Surely the risks outweigh the need to get pregnant so quickly. Your new born needs it's mother.please follow the advice given. Nevertheless, congratulations.

There are no rules on when some of me can have sex again. The NHS does not advise waiting 6 weeks.

i had sections and definitely had sex within 6 weeks. Trying to get pregnant though or just not using contraception is foolish in the extreme. OP has a baby to concentrate on, a baby that needs her. That should be her priority. Not trying for another one, especially when that one could kill her with a uterine rupture.

This page doesn’t mention anything about having sex after a c section or surgery though.

Very much not recommended after a c section, so please don’t encourage it.

Luckyforsome23 · 06/10/2026 04:40

It is hormones. I was so horny and broody right after giving birth. Wait a couple of months at least to see if the feelings pass and give your body a chance to heal.

Iocanepowder · 06/10/2026 01:20

This page doesn’t mention anything about having sex after a c section or surgery though.

Firstly, almost half of births are c sections, so if it was a problem, the page would say the advice was different, given it's as common a way of having a baby as naturally.

Secondly, your point is illogical. You think it's fine to have sex within six weeks of a vaginal birth -where about 90% have vaginal injuries, most have stitches etc, but not after a c section, even though the healing area is far less likely to be impacted by sex.

Thirdly, why do you assume that c section births are worse - lots of us planned c section mums recover very quickly, and are back to normal well before the 6 weeks mark.

Wallywobbles · 06/10/2026 08:18

I had 2 kids conception to birth in 24 months day to day. It’s fine but I was not thrilled about the 2nd pregnancy. When they were small it was hard work but so are all small kids. Both DC had to be pretty independent. One set of hands and all that.
When DC2 got to 2 I went from broody to never again overnight.
