I've been looking into sleeping options for 1st baby (currently 25 weeks) and have been going round in circles. I'd like baby to sleep in our room for at least first 6 months and then go into cot in next door nursery but I can't decide what's best to buy. We've a big room but not loads of space at the side of the bed so a bedside cot might be a bit awkward. A moses basket is the obvious choice but only lasts a few months so it seems like a waste of money and I don't know what we'd do between baby outgrowing that and moving into its own room. I've been thinking of the Amby nature's nest as a compromise. Any thoughts/opinions on what is best?

Pregnant with my first child too (29 weeks). I don't have much space by the side of the bed either so after talking to loads of friends, consensus was to get a Moses basket. Luckily my friend had one she hadn't used. If you don't mind (I wanted to get everything new), you can get a second hand one or one from a friend.

EffiePerine · 30/06/2008 16:54

Could you borrow a Moses basket or a crib? They're likely to feel a bit lost in a big cot at first. Also, you may find you don't want to move your baby at 6 weeks or it isn't practical - I think the recommendation is for them to be in your room for the first 6 months becasue of the risk of cot death. DS was feeding constantly at night at that age and I wouldn;t want to be trekking over to another room! Actually, he was in bed with us come to think of it...

EffiePerine · 30/06/2008 16:55

ah, misread the OP, you said 6 months and not 6 weeks

anyway they may still be in bed with you - DS refused to sleep anywhere else!

I went for a Stokke sleepi cot - as is a smaller size you can use for first 3 months (so doesnt take up too much space in your bedroom) and then an extension kit and new mattress to expand the cot when little one runs out of room. Also on castors so was v handy to wheel it round our old flat from room to room...

squiffy · 30/06/2008 17:02

Having had an Amby nest for my second and not my first, I would say it is a huge huge advantage to go for Amby - so much better in terms of settling baby into a sleeping routine and preventing problems associated with reflux etc.

Worth every penny.

mrsboogie · 30/06/2008 17:03

Isn't it supposed to be dangerous to have a small baby sleeping in bed with you? I know they should be in the same room at first as hearing their mother's breathing is supposed to help prevent SIDS but in the actual bed?

slinkiemalinki · 30/06/2008 17:10

We bought a crib and upgraded to a cot in own room at 5 months. Now we are expecting #2, the crib will come out again - if this is your first and you are planning more, it will still get plenty of use. I didn't want a huge cot in our bedroom which would have to be disassembled when she moved to own room (which is upstairs - we live in a London townhouse with narrow doors!)
Nature's nest just not my sort of thing though.
The SIDS co-sleeping advice is dubious at best unless you are a smoker, drinker, very heavy sleeper etc.

tinkspregnantwithnumber2 · 30/06/2008 17:20

we had a moses basket for dd1 next to the bed as we havent got much space on my side of bed perfect fit she was still in it for a while then when she was about 2 months we moved moses and put it into cot in nursery so she felt abit more secure.

Kew08, what are you planning to do once the baby outgrows the moses basket? From everything I've read they'll outgrow it at 3 months and it's really that bit that I'm unsure about as I can't see me wanting to put baby in own room that early.

Amby nest is still tempting (although £££)

slinkie - good point about more babies, I want 3 (just got to work on persuading DH ).

Ds started off in a moses basket in our room, but it wasn't right next to our bed as it wouldn't fit. I didn't see this as a problem, he was still only a few steps away.

He outgrew it by about 6 weeks, so I bought a cheap second hand cot, with a new mattress, that went in our room, but not right beside the bed.

This cot is now at Granny's house and ds is in his own room (he's 19 mths now)

DS2 is on the way now - I will use the moses basket again, seeing as I have it, but in hindsight I wouldn't have bothered nad would have gone straight to a cot.

He always slept in the cot in his own room for daytime naps anyway, and never seemed bothered by the large space - if they're swaddled anyway, it doesn't make much difference.

HensMum · 30/06/2008 17:31

Babies can outgrow Moses baskets really quickly. Ours was too big by about 7 weeks - not too long but he's a wide boy and kept bashing his arms on the side.
My advice would be to get a Moses basket - borrow one if you can and just get a new mattress - and see how it goes. I thought I'd want to keep the baby in with us for 6 months but had had enough by 7 weeks and off he went to his own room. We all slept a lot better after that.

mrsboogie · 30/06/2008 17:31

thanks for the info guys - I was clearly misinformed...

TheBlonde · 30/06/2008 17:32

mine were out of the moses basket by 6 weeks

sunshine185 · 30/06/2008 17:34

we bought ds a cotbed but he slept in our room first month or so in his pram (that converts) which was like a moses basket.... worked really well as on wheels i could wheel him room to room...

next baby will do the same, but probably just get a cot for the nursery, not cot bed as they are just too big, ds is 25 months now and his cot bed
can turn into a bed, but i want to get him a nicer bed now iykwim!!

Mum2BabyRoo · 30/06/2008 17:54

My LO has just moved into her cot from her moses basket - she is 8 weeks old. There is no way she couls have spent another month in it - just too small.

We were given one of these (and have left it at my mums to use there). Quite heavy but much better and more practical than a moses basket I think.

silvermum · 30/06/2008 19:00

what about a moses basket, then a cotbed? moses baskets are surprisingly cheap (and there are loads on ebay) and seem the most practical thing when babies are tiny. as other posters have said, babies can feel lost in anything much bigger - they're used to being cushioned on all sides! our LO grew out of the moses basket at about two months and moved straight into a cotbed. he looked absolutely tiny in it to start with but i think it will be a good investment as it will last till he's about 5. they are a bit expensive though. the one we have has three possible mattress levels, so to begin with you can have the mattress quite high up, so the baby is within easy reach etc.

OatcakeCravings · 30/06/2008 20:08

My son hated his moses basket and has gone straight into a cot and was happy there. My HV said that bigger babies tend to like the space to move around. My moses basket was the biggest waste of money for me!

MadamePlatypus · 30/06/2008 20:19

We have used moses basket, crib and cot.

Moses basket pros:

  • will fit into small space
  • relatively cheap
  • easy to carry around, whether to relatives and friends or just downstairs.

Moses basket cons:

  • May not last very long - only a couple of months for DD and DS
  • Baby can't see out the side
  • Not very solid bottom, I found it difficult to raise one end when DD/DS had a cold (this would help them to breath).

Crib pros:

  • Will fit into small space
  • may be able to rock
  • Will definitely last 6 months

Crib cons

  • Relatively expensive for something that only lasts 6 months.

Cot pros:

  • Will last till child is atleast 2

Cot cons:

  • May not fit in your bedroom.

Amby Natures Nest was without a doubt my best baby purchase, my DD loves it and has slept through (well, from 11pm to 7am) from her first night home from hospital and I think the nest plays a part. She settles in it very easily and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

honeyapple · 30/06/2008 20:29

hiya-

just wanted to say that for my DS2 (lucky boy) I bought a 2nd hand Amby... and I have only just moved him into a cot and he is nearly 8mths old. I was very sad to pack the Amby away as it was really great and I just loved looking at him sleeping so contentedly in it. I bought mine off another MNer on the sale boards here for about half price- however I would have been happy to pay for a new one if I had known beforehand how successful it was going to be!
Also- the amby was great as a travel cot as quick and easy to put up and down.

sophiewd · 30/06/2008 20:36

We have just bought an Amby for DS. DD would sleep anywhere and was happy on Moses Basket and then cot, Ds only settles when co sleeping which I don't want to do but seems to like being cocooned.

EyeballsintheSky · 30/06/2008 20:37

Travel cot with bassinet. Wish I'd thought of it first. DD outgrew her Moses basket on the way home from the hospital (almost!) so it's a great compromise. Next time I'll leave the basket downstairs and start off in the travel cot.

Another vote for the stokke sleepi - lasts from birth (moses basket size but height of a cot and on wheels), to a cot bed for a 5 year old.

LO also gets used to sleeping in a cot straight away, so there are no worries about 'oooh will they manage with the change' etc.
