Worried about pregnancy tests changing at nearly six weeks

Hi, just looking for a bit of advice as I’m worried about my pregnancy tests. The first day of my last period was 3rd July and I got my first positive on 3rd August, so I should be around 5 weeks 6 days now.
I had some very light brown spotting around 3rd–6th August. It was only a small amount when wiping and it stopped so I’m guessing this was implantation bleeding?
I got 1- 2 weeks on a Clearblue Digital on 7th August and then yesterday, 12th August at about 6:30pm, it went up to 2- 3 weeks. I’d been drinking normally throughout the day before taking that one as well.
I’ve been working night shifts so my sleeping and testing times are a bit all over the place. I finished my night shift this morning, went to sleep and when I woke up I did another strip test which looked lighter than my previous ones. I then did another Clearblue Digital at about 2pm and it’s gone back down to 1- 2 weeks. I hadn’t had anything to drink since around 5am, so I wouldn’t have thought my urine would be particularly diluted.
I’ve got an early scan booked for Saturday 15th August and my first midwife appointment on Tuesday 18th August. I’m just worried because the digital has gone from 1-2 to 2-3, then back to 1- 2 the next day and my tests look a bit lighter ( see picture) and I wondered if this is something I need checking? I’m testing constantly x

Could it be the hook effect? Try diluting a pot of wee with water, see if it makes a difference

Peonies12 · 13/08/2026 15:12

Honestly please stop testing, it doesn't change anything. Is your early scan private? If so, I'd wait until you are at least 8 weeks, it is more definitive at that point. Unless bleeding you have to assume it's OK.

I know I should, I’m just so anxious , yeah it’s private , thank you I’ve had brown spotting and cramping but that’s it x

Stop
Testing

I cannot stress this enough. Just stop. It’s a waste of your money and your time and genuinely means nothing - although it’s doing a great job of feeding your anxiety!

id consider getting some help for your anxiety - it’s going to be a VERY long 18 years otherwise!

OneQuirkyPanda · 13/08/2026 16:55

I can’t tell which are your most recent tests and what time period they were taken over, but I can’t see much progression, they seem to have stalled. I think considering you are almost 6 weeks pregnant now based on your last period I would be concerned at the 1-2 weeks as well, as that indicates 3-4 weeks pregnant (so before you would have even missed a period).

Doing tests like this is not really what they were designed for, so isn’t definitive, especially if you’re taking them at different times of the day, and you could have ovulated later so are not 5w6d, but I can see why you’re concerned, as I would be too. I had a chemical last year and the first sign was my tests didn’t progress much then started to get lighter, so I would be guarded.

RowsOfFlowers · 13/08/2026 17:42

Agree with others, please stop testing. There isn’t much point now. Wait until your scan and go from there. Hope for the best!

Yes I defo need to 🤦🏼‍♀️ I had my son 12 years ago did 3 normal tests to confirm and just left it at that for my normal scans etc. I think seeing slot of videos on social media hasn’t helped much

Those tests getting fainter are a good indication of a potential chemical pregnancy so you’re not mad to keep testing in this way if you choose, despite what posters here are saying.

LFlynn91 · 13/08/2026 18:34

This is honestly like reading about myself. My last period was 3rd July and I also have a private scan on 15th August AND I also do night shifts. Keeping my fingers crossed we get good news xx

Not necessarily. Look up the hook effect. It’s where hCG levels can overwhelm a pregnancy test strip. At the stage OP is at I think it’s just maintaining anxiety and isn’t helpful. If it was first 1-2 weeks fair enough, but OP is 5, almost 6 weeks.

I don’t think her tests have got anywhere near dark enough for that to happen yet though, she said she diluted her urine and it was even lighter, so I don’t think it’s the hook effect.

I do think it’s likely a CP unfortunately, as at almost 6 weeks the clear blue should be reading much higher than 1-2 weeks and her tests should be very dark.

But speaking from an anxiety pov, why keep testing?

Yeah I think so although I took another this evening ( I know I shouldn’t have but it was the last in the pack) and it was darker than the others , confusing. We’ll see anwyay

For me, I just prefer to know rather than assume everything is fine for weeks then find out at a scan that it’s not, but everyone is different.

I just wanted make sure the pregnancy was progressing and as it was and the lines got darker and they was very faint last week the ones I posted was just this week, it calmed my anxiety down. I’ve done the last test in the pack tonight which was darker than the rest. No idea why, but won’t be doing anymore. Just going see what the scan Saturday says. Will update thread ❤️

Update - thanks for everyone’s responses. I know I need to stop testing. The ones I posted was just this week, the ones I did last week was much much fainter , barley noticeable on camera. I’m going put the tests away now I’ve done the last one tonight it was much darker then the ones this morning, wether that’s because I work nights idk. Also only stopped my pill in June , so July was my first period , so I could have ovulated later and etc I aren’t sure. But anyway I’ll update on my scan Saturday. Fingers crossed. 🤞🏼 x

Hopefully you ovulated later and the night shifts have affected the progression, good luck for your scan! X

I really think it’s all just a change of timing with your tests what with night shifts. I think you are fine. Let me know how you get on Saturday xx
