Friend obsessed with my pregnancy

I have this female friend who we’ll call Lucy. Lucy and I have been friends for 2/3 years, met at work and developed a friendship. I got married earlier this year, prior to me getting married she kept asking if I was “pregnant yet” I told her I was waiting til after the wedding to try but she would continuously ask, I even told her to stop asking and that I would tell her if I was but this didn’t stop her.
After the wedding she would ask me on a regular basis if I was pregnant, I actually was, it happened straight away but I wasn’t telling anyone so I just had to lie to her, which felt uncomfortable.
When it came to telling people after our first scan of course I told Lucy, she was so happy for me and it was a lovely moment, she then proceeded to tell me her period was late. I asked if she had taken a test, she said she did a saliva pregnancy test which looked positive but she wasn’t sure, I told her to pop to the chemist next to where we were to get a urine test and told her which one i thought was clearest (I had taken many tests since getting pregnant), she said she didn’t want to do this, fair enough! Just a backstory to her trying for a baby, she has said for sometime she would like to have a baby one day, she said she isn’t trying but if it happened she’d be happy.

This is where the obsessiveness started, we were out shopping and she wanted to look at baby clothes, she said she’d buy something for my baby, I politely told her no, I said I didn’t want to buy anything yet, one, because I felt like it was bad luck and two, because we’re having work done on the house so I don’t want baby things in there until it’s no longer a building site. Fast forward a week she text me to tell me she’s bought the baby a present!! I really felt like she didn’t listen to me at all, overstepped a clear boundary and on top of that I was a bit sad that she was the first person to buy something for my baby, it should’ve been the babies parents or grandparents surely?
She sends me TikTok’s and memes on a daily basis about babies and pregnancy, she’s not really asking how I’m feeling (despite knowing I’ve suffered with morning sickness and fatigue) and just obsesses over the baby, so it’s not like a friendly check in, everything she says is baby related. She even sent me a video about how painful child birth is and said “this will be you soon 😂😂😂😂” weird?
Don’t get me wrong, I love being pregnant and enjoy talking about it but the daily baby TikTok’s are too much, even I don’t look at that much baby/pregnancy related content.
Since being pregnant she has also started stating that I’m her best friend, in a Facebook post she wrote “from co workers to best friends”, i certainly don’t consider her a best friend, I don’t even think we’re that close, we’ve never even been to the others house.
She wants to meet up ALL THE TIME, I’m not super social so meeting her weekly feels a bit intense, especially while I’m not feeling my best. Prior to pregnancy we certainly did not meet this often, less than once a month and now she wants to see me weekly. Again, it doesn’t feel like a friendly check in, she never asks how I’m feeling or if I need anything, it’s all about baby.
When she texts me she will also frequently double text and if I don’t respond within 24 hours she’ll ask me why I haven’t responded, this is a new habit she’s formed, I’ve always taken a day or two to reply to messages, not ideal but why is it now an issue?

More recently my husband and I went for dinner with Lucy and her partner, whilst talking pregnancy her partner said “Lucy is now 25 days” (it sounded like it was confirmed, and he seemed sure she was pregnant). I was so happy for them and said “so did you take a test, are you officially pregnant?” She said she still hadn’t taken a urine test and instead was waiting to get a blood test from the doctors, each to their own but something feels off.

Perhaps all of this sounds innocent and I’m being silly, I’m just finding it a bit exhausting and maybe watching maternal instinct on Netflix hasn’t helped.

Am I being too sensitive? Is it innocent, is she perhaps living through me because she’s struggling to get pregnant? Or is her newly found obsession with me something I should worry about?

Christ. No you are not being too sensitive - she sounds unhinged and perhaps mentally unwell, possibly as a result of struggling herself? She may well not wish you harm and maybe it's innocence from her part, but if her behaviour is affecting you then you have a right to do something about it.

Do you actually want to stay in touch with her? Or are you doing so out of obligation? Just because you were friends once doesn't mean you have to stay in touch.

Personally I'd take a MASSIVE step back, put some boundaries in place, stop seeing her unless you actually want to.

Gardenisablooming · 06/08/2026 13:28

If you had chance to see her latest purchases I bet a fake bump would be on the list.

Step away op..she spends a bit unhinged.

ButterscotchBabe · 06/08/2026 13:30

Her actions are not normal, I would be very wary of anyone obsessing over your pregnancy. I'd cut off contact, block her and keep your distance

BrokenBiscuitss · 06/08/2026 13:30

I dont think shes pregnant

birdinatree1903 · 06/08/2026 13:31

Oh wow, I would try and create some distance between you, she sounds unhealthily interested in your pregnancy and what she has said about her own alleged pregnancy isn’t adding up either. Funny you should mention Maternal Instinct as that’s what was going through my mind as I was reading your post! You could always blame the pregnancy symptoms, eg sickness and fatigue, as to why you’re needing to keep to yourself a bit more and hope that things calm down a bit, otherwise you might need to put some firm boundaries in place before your baby arrives. Best of luck and congratulations!

purplecorkheart · 06/08/2026 13:34

Do you still work together? I think you need to back away from Lucy and her Husband. I would not be meeting up with her and her husband. I would also not be meeting up with her. I would also stop sharing details about your pregnancy and ask her to stop sending so many messages. If you still work together you might have to do this gradually. If you are not still workmates then I would consider texting her and telling her it is a bit intense and that you wish her well but you are now going to be focusing on your family and friends.

Ah that’s so helpful to hear, it’s hard to tell if pregnancy hormones are making me more sensitive!
Honestly, if she stopped talking to me I don’t think I’d reach out, I don’t feel a need to keep her in my life, even more so now that I’m starting a family.
the only issue is that we work together occasionally so it would just be the awkwardness around that.
I think you’re right about taking a step back, I’ll distance myself and see how I go.
thanks ☺️

Def sounds like the start of a Channel 5 thriller. Run away fast!
I hope you don’t work together anymore.

Moroccogill · 06/08/2026 14:02

This does sound like the start of a true crime documentary on Netflix. I would slowly back away.

Thank you! It’s so helpful to hear this from other people. I was worried I was overthinking it and being harsh.
i’ll distance myself and see how it goes.

Reading your post I also thought of Maternal Instinct! Scary!

This is a tricky one because you've already tried to set boundaries and she's completely walked over them. You may have to be more firm with her. Hopefully she won't do anything unhinged in response.

strawberrylemons · 06/08/2026 20:09

an update for anyone interested, Lucy has just messaged me asking to meet up because she has some “big news” to share that she can’t possibly tell me over text…

Maybe see if she’ll do a video call? I wonder if she’s just going to tell you she’s taken a pregnancy test now. Or maybe she’ll tell you she’s having twins 😅 what are you going to do?

Rhaidimiddim · 06/08/2026 20:26

She is so far out of line. As others have advised, but some serious distance between her and you.

its got to be that, although last time I saw her she said she HAD to see me and it ended up being nothing so it’s hard to say, she’s just trying to trick me into seeing her because she knows I love a bit of gossip 😂
I think I’m going to avoid seeing her, if she wants to tell me she’s pregnant I’m sure she’ll eventually crack and tell me over text.
I would be amazed if she actually is pregnant at the same time as me

When I was young and had my first dc I had a similar friend.
Every month she'd cry pregnant. Then mc. Or ectopic. It was quite draining.
We drifted apart.

Last time I heard she been declared unable to conceive. Very sad.

That’s terribly tragic for that friend.
I do feel for people in that situation, there’s only so much you can do as a friend, I can understand why you drifted

When my dd was an adult she found her on fb. Was quite odd that nearly 20 years later she went looking for her. Think dd was polite but didn't keep up contact.

Tickets25 · 06/08/2026 21:02

I'd be worried about what she'll be like when the baby is actually here!
Congrats btw!

Yes that does worry me, I have these images of her turning up the day I give birth! I will not be telling her any further details

Gosh.

Sounds to me that shes desperate to be pregnant and is trying to live it through your pregnancy.
Its actually quite sad... but equally as sad as it is also pretty scary for you.

I would say youre winding down a bit during the pregnancy now and happy to do a video call but not up for meeting.
Then gradually try to fade it out. Kindly... if you have the energy

incognito1991 · 06/08/2026 21:40

Not to scare you but have you watched maternal instincts on Netflix? If not look at the case online

Sorry, this sounds very hard. She is clearly someone who cannot keep to boundaries so I would step back.
