Incorrect gender at 17weeks

I went for a private scan today and we were told we are having a boy. I’m just nervous as I’ve heard so many people saying their scans were wrong, cords were mistaken for genitalia and swollen female parts.

We already have a little girl, and I was convinced this baby was a girl also (so sick, lots of spots when I usually have clear skin).

We won’t be having anymore children, but not sure whether I should start donating my little girls clothes and start buying boys or if I will later be told it’s another girl!

Why not just hang on a bit and see what they say at your anomaly scan?

Gowlett · 15/04/2026 20:45

Can you not hold onto the clothes for now?

When tiny, they’ll mostly wear a babygro…

Helpboat · 15/04/2026 20:47

Just wait for the 20 week scan .

susiedaisy1912 · 15/04/2026 20:47

You will just have to be patient and see if a later scan shows things more clearly. And just for info some hospitals won’t tell you what the sex is at the 20 week anomaly scan.

Really? Why? And where? Always was asked would you like to know gender and everyone i know has had similar

PersephonePomegranate · 15/04/2026 20:48

What's the rush and why couldn't a newborn boy wear your daughter's old baby grows? They need changing every five minutes, anyway!

Scans can be wrong - we often joked about the scan being wrong and DD coming out a boy. Making assumptions on your baby's sex on how your feeling is also fallible.

tealandteal · 15/04/2026 20:49

When they are little they wear gender neutral stuff mostly anyway so if you’d like to buy sometimes new why not buy it in neutral colours? Then you can give the stuff away later when you are sure

ChickenBananaBanana · 15/04/2026 20:50

Are you upset it's a boy?

Elizab94 · 15/04/2026 21:04

Delighted it’s a little boy but doubting it right from these photos??

Isobel201 · 15/04/2026 21:04

A baby is not going to be worried about the colour of the clothes he/she is wearing.

Elizab94 · 15/04/2026 21:06

This image has me doubting the most!

Depends on the Trust.

There are some areas in the UK where gender abortions are a problem due to cultural preferences.

FluentTealGuide · 15/04/2026 21:31

@Helpboat Officially there’s no requirement to share, as the purpose of the scan is to check serious anatomical elements and requires a lot of concentration, so that has to take priority. Any trust has the right to implement policy where the information is purposely not checked/released for both this reason and due to concern over complaints or fear of legal repercussions. In practice, almost all will tell you if asked (or will offer), but a minority may not.

NHS Grampian won't tell you at a anomaly scan or any other. Not due to high abortion rates but because a couple tried to sue for getting it wrong.
Only way is to pay for a private scan.

All three times I was told the sex of my babies at the 20 week scan. This was at two different NHS Trusts.

Fucking unbelievable that they had the brass neck to try and sue for this.

Yes I know that, with one of mine they struggled to determine gender due to position and I said it was fine as long as they had checked all the other more important stuff I.e the purpose of the scan. I just didn’t realise that they would actively withhold that information if they knew.

Chocaholick · 15/04/2026 22:11

It’s a little boy OP, that’s not a girl scan at all. Congratulations 🩵

Interesting, thank you for sharing. I throught it was common knowledge that even if they say it’s a certain gender there’s always a small chance it could turn out to be the other because you can’t know for certain until babe is here. Sigh some people.

I used to work in a Midlands hospital where this was the case

London..... there was big signs up everywhere saying do not ask us. However when I went in, as a white Scottish female, she happily asked if I wanted to know.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 15/04/2026 23:13

You don’t have to donate stuff right now. Just hang on for a while

soundof · 15/04/2026 23:15

pay for a private scan to double check.

I have 4 boys and all of their scans said boys, from 11 weeks.

bogusf · 15/04/2026 23:40

That’s 1000% a little boy. Congratulations you’re about to meet the first boy to ever truly steal your heart 🩵
