Is there anyone else here on Clexane?

I had a DVT a number of years ago, so have to inject twice daily until the bebe arrives

I spent 6 weeks in hospital at the start of my pg and had to have it then as I wasn't moving around much. It forgotten about that! I had so many needles stuck into me during that time!

minster · 17/06/2008 08:50

I use it - various doses 20mg or 40 mg - from conception until 6 weeks after delivery. This is my 3rd pregnancy on clexane. It is much less painful injecting into you tummy than leg (it helps if you have a bit of extra fat), though that can be hard at the end of pregnancy (you can use a flabby bit of arm if you have nowhere else but then you have the problem of covering up the bruises). With clexane pre-filled syringes you don't remove the little air bubble before you inject, store them at room temp (don't refrigerate) & to avoid horrible bruising don't touch the injection site after you've injected - never rub it. They sting a bit but you get used to it really quickly.

I'm on clexane till 6 weeks after delivery but only have to inject 40 mg once a day, hated doing it at first but it has become part off my daily routine now and as i am due next week it seems to be doing the trick,
I do have to ice first though!!!

whiteorchid · 17/06/2008 14:26

Yes, I'm on twice-daily Clexane too. You do get used to it eventually - it just becomes part of your daily routine. Agree with minster that the tummy is less painful than the thigh, but it probably depends on where you tend to lay down fat. I have a nice little fatty layer round my middle - it's the only time in my life I've been pleased to be able to pinch an inch (or two ).

I'm guessing you're probably wearing compression stockings too? Lovely, aren't they?

Minniethemoocher · 17/06/2008 22:02

I am on Clexane too, 20mg twice a day, they do sting a bit!

thumbwitch · 18/06/2008 00:12

I was on clexane 40mg once a day because of having Factor V leiden thrombophilia. Hated it and was pathetic with the needles, had to get DH to inject me (my sister had the same problem!). Chose to do my legs, still have shadows from the bruising and yes, they really did sting!
I also had to have Anti D prophylaxis - the midwives giving it apologised in advance for hurting me as it is apparently an unpleasant injection - I didn't feel it at all in comparison with daily clexane!
Such a shame they don't do the clexane in those neat little delivery thingies that insulin comes in - I could do that, but not the needles and plunger thing, feel faint at the thought...
In fact, it is the biggest thing that puts me off having 2nd baby - will have to try though as DH is determined to have 2.

Can you tell me - is the bruising as bad on the tummy as it is on the thighs? I had a freakout at the thought of injecting into my nice tight tum when I was in last stages of pregnancy so put up with the leg pain instead.

I had to inject clexane in my last pregnancy as they found out I have Protein S deficity (sp?)
I found it stung quite a bit if I did it fast, if you take your time, it lessens. I hated doing it but knew I had too. I did mine into my tummy as I could pinch an inch there, even though I am skinny, I have baby flab there lol.

JustJules, how are you??

SparklyGothKat · 18/06/2008 00:39

oh and he is still breastfeeding... after all the hassle we got from the HCPs, we are still doing it lol

whiteorchid · 18/06/2008 08:55

thumbwitch, in my experience, the key to preventing bruising is to inject very slowly. I inject around my waist, and the bruising isn't bad at all. It didn't leave any permanent marks when I stopped injecting after my first pregnancy. Also, I do think it stings much more in the legs (and if someone else is doing it!). DH did one of mine, and that was enough for me!

thumbwitch · 18/06/2008 14:43

thanks whiteorchid - will give that a go next time then.

shulzee · 22/06/2008 08:43

Does anyone have a hard time breastfeeding after taking clexane?

whiteorchid · 22/06/2008 08:48

Breastfeeding was fine, but I switched to warfarin a week or so after giving birth. Are you having problems?

shulzee · 22/06/2008 09:19

yes, had a very hard time last time, never enough milk so i had to stop and now i am pregnant again and i was just wondering if i will be able to do it this time or i will have problems again. i was thinking it was because of clexane because if you think about it, clexane is a blood thinner and breast milk is really blood that changes into milk so it could be clexane is not allowing me to produce milk.

aquasea · 22/06/2008 09:56

I had a PE (blod clot in my lung) at 11 weeks preg and had to inject big doses twice daily. I will have to do it from the minute I find out I am pregnant next time (possibly even before - from when we start trying). I was a big baby about it. Had DH do it for a while at the start but found it much better when I did it myself. It made me feel more in control and less like a victim. It isn't nice and I really sympathise. Everyone said I would get used to it but I didn't really. I found they really hurt each time and while the pain didn't get any less, I guess I indulged it less as time went on...if that makes sense.
I breastfed and I think if anything I had too much milk.

Rari · 13/10/2008 16:27

I have Thrombophila Factor V Leiden an history 3 recurrent miscarriages. I have been prescribed Clexane injections for my next pregancy but the consultant says there is absolutely no data about whether it will work. Would be good to hear from anyone who has been successful/unsuccessful so I can get some idea of what I am letting myself in for! I'm not worried about the injections, I'm worried because Dr. says this my final chance and I need to know whether it is likely to work before I can bring myself go ahead with it. Thanks for any experiences - positve or negative.

Junemum · 28/10/2008 18:56

I was advised to take clexane at just over 5 weeks because I have Factor v leidens and had a miscarriage in July.( I had 2 healthy babies 8 and 10 years ago) The consultant was hoping that I wasn't already pregnant when she contacted me but it was too late. I am now 7 weeks gone and have been taking it for 11 days. Getting used to it now and better at not bruising myself but got very down about it to start with! Unfortunately I have started to spot and am having to rest. The fetal health unit say it could be the clexane - has anyone else had bleeding and still carried to term?

Rari · 29/10/2008 12:59

I am really sorry to hear about your miscarriage. My cousin is also fvl and has had bleeding on and off throughout (although they didn't prescribe clexane as this is her 1st pregnancy so not sure if this is relevant). Do they know for sure that it was the fvl that caused your miscarriage? They tell me that they can't know for sure but seems there's nothing else wrong - have had lots of tests.I hope everything works out ok.

MrsMcJnr · 31/10/2008 23:11

Rari ? I have factor III thrombophilia and have a beautiful, perfect baby boy of 9 months with whom I injected Clexane throughout the pregnancy. I am now 9 weeks pregnant again and doing it all again. I found plenty of positive stories on the internet about pregnancies with Clexane; I personally think it was the difference between my unsuccessful and my successful pregnancies. I also know that some of the other ladies on this thread like Jules had successful pregnancies too.

Junemum ? I?ve had spotting in both clexane pregnancies; I think it is more common because of the thinning effect (I?m on aspirin too). My Dr also thinks I?ve had spotting this time because the placenta is close to my cervix. I find that the bruising is worse in the first few weeks, by 20 weeks I didn?t get bruises anymore.
