Are Fruit teas safe to drink pregnant?

I need help, the internet is a scare I swear! Are fruit teas ok to drink during pregnancy? I’m in my first trimester and finding it hard to find something I can enjoy. I’ve recently bought the twinnings fruit selection, but realised it has hibiscus in it. Any advice would be highly appreciated!

Generally fine but not hibiscus. Can you not just drink non caffeinated tea?

I'm glad you posted this. My favourite tea lately has been hibiscus and rose (i'm 25 weeks pregnant). I just did an Internet search on hibiscus after seeing your comment ... no more of that tea for me!

I think those teas sound fine, although clearly from my comment above i'm far from an expert lol

Yeah they all have hibiscus in it! I didn’t know when I bought them. I’ve gone off decaf tea. I generally drink water but it’s always nice to have a hot drink.

Hot water with lemon? Decaf coffee? You can try cordial and hot water (I didn’t love that but some do).

I used to like weak hot orange squash with a slice of lemon

I drank regular tea. Have the guidelines changed?

Fizzypop89 · 20/01/2026 08:33

Yeah thanks, I’ll give it all ago. Thanks! I’ve gone of decaf coffee as well! The only thing I am really enjoying is hot chocolate. I’m trying to limit it though..

Just drink normal tea? Or literally any other herbal tea that doesn't have hibiscus in? Chamomile, mint, ginger...

Fizzypop89 · 20/01/2026 08:35

@NoArmaniNoPunani I don’t think so, as long as you keep caffeine intake down to the guidelines. I just completely cut it out with decaf options. However I’ve gone off them.

If you like hot chocolate then Yogi teas do a choco tea which is quite nice (check ingredients but I'd be surprised if there was hibiscus in it)

hahagogomomo · 20/01/2026 08:37

Try cheaper brands, they don’t include hibiscus. NHS says to avoid large amounts of, one cup won’t hurt anyway. Try redbush tea for a more tea like flavour or chamomile perhaps, i
buy my herbal teas from Lidl

hahagogomomo · 20/01/2026 08:40

Another excellent drink I’ve recently discovered is hot ginger cordial (Lidl brand) ultra concentrated so it’s 10:1 diluted despite being a bit more to but lasts longer than squash. Hot lemon barley water was always a favourite when I was pregnant though haven’t seen it for a while. I’m caffeine intolerant since having my DD’s (long time ago) so I’ve tried most non caffeine drinks

Not sure how old your kids are? Mine are mid teens and it was always like that - you can have a bit but not more than a cup or two (depending on size of mug and coffee or tea) plus chocolate and soft drinks count.

IkaBaar · 20/01/2026 08:55

Red bush tea? I don’t like de-caffeinated tea either.

Agreed. The ginger can help with nausea as well so double happy. I think all these they say (while pregnant) not more than 3-4 but worth checking :)

Chamomile no, ginger and mint fine. Not all tea is a good idea and it’s worth checking. Normal t a has caffeine and it is recommended to only have a small amount when pregnant.

in first tri I had a similar issue with wanting a hot drink, being grossed out by tea, worried about herbal ingredients. I drank peppermint tea a fair bit but started making a hot drink from Welch’s grape juice and hot water, and it’s delicious still in 2nd tri. 1/5 juice to 4/5 water.

it should be the Welch’s grape juice from the fridge not the version in the supermarket non fridge juice section. One is 100% grapes and the other is full of added sugar and chemicals. It does have a naturally high sugar content but then it’s only a small amount!

aLogLady · 20/01/2026 19:32

Oh and imho Yorkshire decaf is the best if you want to try again. I got Clipper ones and they were foul tasting, like actually tasted fishy.

Fizzypop89 · 20/01/2026 19:59

@aLogLady Thanks for the advice! I’ll give that a go! I haven’t heard of Welch’s grape before. Tbf I’m just drinking water all the time 🤣

Iceland sell it for £2 :) you could also go down the road of fancy ones like crawstons juices, I use them for mixing with fizzy water as I love a can of whatever but don’t want the chemicals.

i was drinking my hot grape drink over Christmas and it had mulled wine vibes in my mind. I might have weird tastes though haha.

currently experimenting with fancy hot chocolates without sugar or additives, trying to keep my calcium intake up! (And saw babies RIBS!! yesterday so clearly it’s working haha.

Fizzypop89 · 21/01/2026 07:49

@aLogLadyoh wow that is amazing! Yes I love those ideas! I love sparkling water, I add it to appletizer as like you, try to just have stuff with no extra chemicals, additives.

No not always and they caution against too much camomile.
