Midwife told me to reuse urine pot due to shortages

Has anyone else been told this? I was given a pot to takeaway from my booking appointment with the instructions to sterilise at home and reuse when I need to bring in future urine samples.

I may be a bit embarrassed as it's my first pregnancy but it also has to be first morning urine meaning it's going to look dehydrated when I pass it over (sorry for that image) but is this something you just get over? 🤣

And I suppose they just empty it and pass it back for me to pop in my handbag!

I actually asked for this specifically as I wanted to reduce plastic waste.

Not only that but helps the NHS to save the money to, I think it's a great thing and nothing to be embarrassed about.

KimTheresPeopleThatAreDying · 25/10/2025 11:45

Sounds very sensible. We all need to cut down on our plastic use. I hate to break it to you but pregnancy is not a time of particular dignity.

ComfortFoodCafe · 25/10/2025 11:45

Dont see the issue its just a plastic pot?

TomatoSandwiches · 25/10/2025 11:49

Completely normal, I have my own pot i bought myself and ask for it back, they take a sample with a plastic syringe thing and I know I've always got my pot to piss in 😂

igotbills · 25/10/2025 11:51

I'm all for reusing and recycling, it's just grim to put a used pot in a handbag I'm sorry!
Why can't they disinfect them at the hospitals and reuse them that way?

Just take a plastic bag to put it in.

Elektra1 · 25/10/2025 11:51

They don’t care about the colour of your urine, they are just testing it for sugars. You’ll have far more unedifying experiences than this as your pregnancy progresses - but it’s all worth it!

nhsmanagersanonymous · 25/10/2025 11:51

I always had this and my last pregnancy was 19 years ago. It’s not new, it’s just sensible. Yes you get over it. Put a small plastic bag in your handbag to keep it in

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 25/10/2025 11:51

Or you can probably get some from Amazon if you’re squeamish

QueenClinomania · 25/10/2025 11:52

Its a good idea. Hopefully people actually follow the instructions and sterilise the pots.

Put it in a plastic bag and be reassured onky your wee has gone in it and the pots has been properly sterilised.

Yoir concerns sound rather precious.

Just take a plastic bag to put it in.

I could get really creative with various household vessels

They did this with me 6 years ago. The NHS literally hasn’t got a pot to piss in.

DarkForces · 25/10/2025 11:55

Can't you rinse it at the appointment before it goes in your bag?

It's not a 'concern' really, rather I'm curious as to why they can't be disinfected at hospitals?

Don't worry I'm not about to write to my MP

Yes all ours do this now. Once theyve tested it you pour it away and then take it home.

Newsenmum · 25/10/2025 11:56

You rinse it with water in the sink.

MardyAnn · 25/10/2025 11:56

Two of my pregnancies were very close together, my lovely midwife laughed her head off when I proudly produced my pee pot from the previous pregnancy at the booking in appointment of the next one!

No idea how these appointments actually go, I've just been told I'm to take it home and sterilise it with the kettle

Think thats grim? Wait till your knee deep in poo & sick.

Tickingcrocodile · 25/10/2025 11:57

Take a ziploc bag.

That made me laugh.

If you are to sterilise it with the kettle, that implies you should sterilise the kettle and the pee pot together.

Just put it in a plastic bag, with or without wee, wash it in hot, soapy water when you get home and bung on the top shelf of the dishwasher and run the hottest cycle.

When your baby is here, you will be putting far worse things in your handbag.

Yes it's grim

Poo and sick also grim

Many things can be grim

Thanks for your input

Mine are 10 and 6 and this is what I always did. Much better than all that waste.

TelephoneWires · 25/10/2025 12:08

But you have to bring it in to the appointment first so that is equally grim as taking it home again surely? I used to be a midwife and people brought their samples in jam jars or old camera film pots sometimes.
