Midwife told me to reuse urine pot due to shortages

Has anyone else been told this? I was given a pot to takeaway from my booking appointment with the instructions to sterilise at home and reuse when I need to bring in future urine samples.

I may be a bit embarrassed as it's my first pregnancy but it also has to be first morning urine meaning it's going to look dehydrated when I pass it over (sorry for that image) but is this something you just get over? 🤣

And I suppose they just empty it and pass it back for me to pop in my handbag!

I think this has been happening for years tbh. Definitely reusable pots in my last pregnancy ten years ago. They always tipped it out and gave a quick rinse / dry with a paper towel / lid back on before handing back. There were always spare pots in the loo or you can ask at reception.

Honestly, it being quickly rinsed and dried at the hospital is all I'm asking. If this is what normally happens I'll be a happy customer

You can easily do that in the toilet.

Or remain a perpetually unhappy customer.

"Local entitled woman wishes to not store stale unwashed piss pot in handbag, the horror!"

What’s wrong with pouring it down the toilet at the hospital and taking an empty tub home with you?

You need to try and think proactively to resolve your own perceived issues that really are nonentities. You must make your life in this world an unnecessarily difficult place to be in.

What’s your solution then?

Nip to loo and give it a quick wash under sink seems sensible. The midwives always gave them a quick rinse and dry before handing back clean then I’d sterilise at home.

How about washing it at the hospital?
Oh wait, this is what I suggested at the start and it's really rubbed people up the wrong way

I agree but wonder what the OP answers.

We used to do this but at the gp surgery I worked at we poured the wee down the sink in the consultation room and then got told to stop doing this 😁.

We don’t have time to trudge from one end of the gp surgery to the other to pour it down the toilet for a woman who is perfectly capable of doing this herself. So now they get handed the full container back.

Being snippy and snarky won’t get you anywhere really. Why don’t you wash it in the toilet before returning home?

RoostingHens · 25/10/2025 15:44

This reminds me of a story my GP told. The practice would regularly get given lovely homemade jam by a patient. One day the patient came in with a sample in a jam jar and asked for the jar back. The GP couldn’t look at the jam the same way again after that….

I'm so enjoying the replies on here they're wonderful!

Of course im going to wash it myself at the hospital, i know reading is hard but ive already said this.

I also have the option of suppling my own pots etc if I want to :) they're like 10p each on amazon

I'm just err.. surprised at how many people on here seem to think this choice makes me precious

I'm still replying to posts on here as honestly some are a bit ridiculous, it really doesn't mean I'm actually looking for an answer, as I already have it

When you've answered the same comment 5 times I'm sorry it just gets a bit irritating. I suppose It's practice for when I'm a mother

Bill Bryson told a story like that. As a child his mum would have him pee in the toity jar if he needed to go when supposed to be leaving the house. His mum also stored many leftovers in jars in the fridge and one day he sees his Dad eating (tinned) peaches from the youth jar.

Whyjustwhy83 · 25/10/2025 15:51

@Toydrum fine if I'm at home but I've always been asked for a fresh wee sample. They wouldn't except a one done earlier at midwife appointments and I don't use a handbag to carry a jug.

almay · 25/10/2025 15:52

I don’t think anyone was telling you to walk around with the full pot after the appointment? You’d just wash it there as you’ve said, which for anyone who’s ever had to do this before is the obvious thing to do so I think people are just surprised at your surprise, if you understand what I mean.

Henbags · 25/10/2025 15:53

Just wait until you’re in labour. “Grim” will take on a whole new meaning. Time to suck it up. I work for the NHS and we can’t even get envelopes now without great difficulty, so having to reuse urine containers is all par for the course. I have had to take back my used wee on a number of occasions after seeing the midwife. Big deal.

Why is you washing it at the hospital before putting it in your bag bothering people? Please reply as if to a five year old.

Yeah, as I said I'm a first time mum (so have never done it) and only a few replies have been kind and helpful explaining that it's normal

But most have just been rather condescending. I really hope when baby arrives I don't need to rely on mumsnet for advice as I'm dreading using it for anything important now

The pee pot conundrum really wasn't serious, it was a lighthearted question which got answered 5 minutes after I posted

Sorry, I don’t remember quoting you or a conversation. Can you refresh my memory please!

HostaCentral · 25/10/2025 15:58

I used old jam pots! Washed and sterilised with boiling water. And no, I didn't then use them for food.

TaxDragon · 25/10/2025 15:59

I was just given one pee pot per pregnancy, seems standard.

I really wish I could explain this! I haven't got a clue why it's bothered so many posters. Is it acceptable to tell a 5 year old some people are a bit rank?

Despite my story above, if they are washed well (eg dishwasher) and then sterilised then really they should be perfectly fine for food. I do understand the squeamishness though 😝

Yeah, I don’t think this site is the goldmine of useful info it once was. It’s now mostly people looking for a fight, as you’ve seen.

Then quit the thread. You’ve said what you wanted to say and understood what the solution is.

Maybe you enjoy the back and forth. Maybe you’re irritable. Hope your pregnancy goes well.

I'm all for reusing and recycling, it's just grim to put a used pot in a handbag I'm sorry!
Why can't they disinfect them at the hospitals and reuse them that way?

Rinse it in the surgery? Put it in a small plastic bag? It’s only a bit of pee fgs not nuclear waste.
