raised bp is only a potential hazard in 3rd trimester of pregnancy (I think, not being a doctor myself).

Really Iwouldn't worry at all if I were you, except you've presumably missed scan opportunities/antenatal screening. If you don't much mind that, I should think you've sensibly saved yourself a lot of bother.

I didnt find out that I was Pg with DS2 till I was 16 weeks, so I would say that for me it wasnt an issue.

star6 · 31/05/2008 21:05

Are you supposed to have appointments with your GP or Midwife? And how often? I've had monthly antenatal checks with my GP... not much tbh - urine sample, bp check, heard hb once (approx 10 minute appointments).
Then booking in appt with midwife at hospital.
Then 12 week scan and follow up blood tests.
Now, 20 week scan on friday... will Midwife appointments become more regular after this, does anyone know? I feel like my GP doesn't really know as much about pregnancy as the midwives... I'd prefer to see a midwife. Is that what normally happens?

Buckets · 31/05/2008 21:07

Have you still got your wee pot? She will probably scowl if you don't bring a wee sample .

twinklytoes · 31/05/2008 21:10

star - in my neck of the woods 1st timers will see GP at 25wks and get the matb1, then midwife at 28wks, 32, 36, 38, 40.

knickers - I've only seen midwife at 16wks and won't see again until 28wks. - (3rd)

PortAndLemon · 31/05/2008 21:11

I don't think I saw the midwife between 13 and 20 weeks anyway either time -- I'm pretty sure I had the first scan and the booking appointment at around 13 weeks, then the second scan at around 21 weeks and a midwife appointment at 24 weeks. This time round I dd get an extra appointment with a consultant's minion at 21 weeks as I was a VBAC case.

star -- yes, you'd normally now have (I think) 24 week, 28 week, 32 week, 36 week, 38 week, 39 week and 40 week appointments with a midwife. If you develop any complications that frequency might be increased.

star6 · 31/05/2008 21:12

OK, that sounds better. So midwife becomes more frequent as pregnancy progresses? That makes more sense to me... Thanks twinklytoes!!! Is it different throughout the UK? Where are you?

elkiedee · 31/05/2008 21:12

star6, it depends a lot on local arrangements - I had what they called "shared care" and I did see midwives quite a bit more at the end but less than I was told I would at that point - every fortnight but at one point I was told it should be weekly.

KOMH, I wouldn't panic too much but just ask about how much you should see your mw now and find some system for remembering the appts. Can anyone help with your 9 month old dd?

FrannyandZooey · 31/05/2008 21:14

here you just have your 20 week scan, then don't see the midwife till 28, 31, 34, 36, 38, 41 weeks

if you feel fine and the baby is moving and you are getting larger, I don't see any problem

star6 · 31/05/2008 21:14

thanks portandlemon! You've been so helpful to me on two threads today!! it's an educational day for me - thanks to you

CantSleepWontSleep · 31/05/2008 21:19

It's only important if a problem is missed, which you obv wouldn't know about. I wouldn't worry about it, but do try to see her a bit more from now on in case any probs do develop as the pregnancy progresses.

star6 · 31/05/2008 21:22

very true, frannyandzooey!
It's so hard to keep simple things like that in mind when pregnant, isn't it? Thanks for that.

CantSleepWontSleep · 31/05/2008 21:28

Ah, but franny, gestational diabetes could be missed on that basis. I feel fine, am getting bigger and baby is moving, but I still have it and would be harming the baby if it hadn't been picked up.

FrannyandZooey · 31/05/2008 21:29

is it very common CS? sorry you are not well

MerryMarigold · 31/05/2008 21:30

here we only have one appointment at 16 weeks, then 22 weeks. (that's apart from the scans). where do you live that you can make so many appointments?!!!

star6 · 31/05/2008 21:32

merrymarigold - surely you have appointments after the 22 weeks?

CantSleepWontSleep · 31/05/2008 21:33

Too common for my liking . I don't know the official stats, but it's not uncommon IYSWIM.
I was routinely tested because of my family history and weight, but it could be picked up (or at least suspected and further tests ordered) from glucose found in urine at mw appts.

MerryMarigold · 31/05/2008 21:33

oh yes, but this poster hasn't got that far yet!

star6 · 31/05/2008 21:39

me either MM I was just looking ahead!! My monthly antenatal appts with GP are because I've chosen to see a private GP for various reasons. I also see the NHS GP but they can't be bothered with little questions...etc. The private GP is worth the extra 40 quid per month and answers all of my silly questions/aches/pains...etc... was having a lot of bleeding at first and was scary... he will answer via phone or email (without charge!!)

MerryMarigold · 31/05/2008 21:45

yes, the level of care seems to really depend on where you live. I was told I was havign triplets, had to wait 2 weeks to see any doctor about it, and then had to wait 1.5 HOURS after my appointment time in a stuffy room. Enough to raise your blood pressure. Now they tell me it is twins, but I am not sure who to believe! It's kind of exciting to see how many come out, not just what sex they are!!!

star6 · 31/05/2008 21:51

That's crazy!!! How can they mess something like that up? Goodness... I hope I'm really just having one and not twins! ha ha!!! waiting 1 1/2 hours and being pregnant does not mix.... that's just unreasonable.

MerryMarigold · 31/05/2008 21:52

i live in east london. 'nuff said.

I had my booking in appointment at 10 weeks, no dating scan, I had to pay for a private nuchal scan at 12 weeks, round here they offer the triple test at 16 weeks, but I prefered to have a nuchal earlier.

I was meant to have a midwife appointment at 15/16 weeks, but she was on holiday and they had no one to cover scan booked for 20 weeks, then midwife appointment at 24, 28, 32, 36, 40 weeks.

So I won't have had a midwife appointment from 10 to 24 weeks.

I am 43 years old and I did think that maybe they would want to monitor me a little bit more closely, because of my "advance" years!
