How did you conceive your girl?

I’m currently pregnant with my 3rd boy. Conceived my 1st around ovulation day, and second and third have been conceived a day before ovulation day. We tried to sway the odds with the 3rd as we wanted a daughter so tried to do the ‘Shettles method’ but it’s impossible to know when I’m ovulating as it changes every month. Turns out this pregnancy would be a day before ovulation. I’m beating myself up a bit we didn’t try it better as it’s my last pregnancy. It doesn’t matter now but curious, when did you conceive your girl in your cycle?

Not intentionally but I realised both of our girls were conceived a couple of days before ovulation. DD1 was on a 35 day cycle and with DD2 it was a 24 day cycle. With the second one I didn’t even realise it was so short until I got the EWCM on day 12.

Surly it would make no difference when you ovulated as it’s sperm that determines biological sex.

BananaBreadWithCustard · 23/08/2025 17:13

@GirlintheframeMale sperm swim faster but don’t last as long whereas female sperm swim slower but last longer. Whilst you’re correct that the sperm is the deciding factor in the sex, people can try to tip the odds slightly in their favour by tracking ovulation. If you have sex when you ovulate and the egg is already there and waiting then a boy is slightly more likely as the ‘boy’ sperm will get there first. If you have sex a couple of days before ovulation then in theory, more of the boy sperm will have died off before the egg is released, thus increasing the chance of a girl.

2 girls , never tracked ovulation for us what will be will be .

jeansgenie · 23/08/2025 17:22

There is a lot of research that suggests it is based on the cycle as female sperm last longer/are stronger. If the sperm meets the egg earlier it is likely to be a boy - like a sprint vs marathon.

DramaAlpaca · 23/08/2025 17:26

I wasn't bothered about having a girl, but my experience backs up the OP's in that I'm as certain as I can be that all three of my boys were conceived on the day of ovulation or the day before.

Edited to add: congratulations OP, having three boys is brilliant.

Rowen32 · 23/08/2025 17:28

The same for both

Girlintheframe · 23/08/2025 17:28

@BananaBreadWithCustardah I see! Had no idea! Thanks for that

Henbags · 23/08/2025 17:37

There are no proven methods. It is luck of the draw.

marzipanpan · 23/08/2025 17:39

My boys were both conceived on O day which supports the whole ‘shettles/babydust’ method idea that ‘boys are fast but die sooner, girls are slower but live longer’ thing.

However, is there any real solid scientific backing to this? I have seen plenty of people online say they followed the method religiously but got the opposite gender.

Passthecake30 · 23/08/2025 17:40

I always ovulated on day 10 (now post menopause!) so for ds I dtd on ovulation, for dd I deliberately tried dtd a couple of days before ovulation for a few months, and it worked. Dp was non the wiser 😜

aintnospringchicken · 23/08/2025 17:42

Never tracked ovulation. DC1 was a girl and DC2 a boy.I just thought it was down to luck of the draw.

Campingisnexttogodliness · 23/08/2025 17:45

After a run of boys I had 2 dd's a year apart.. Only dtd on day 23 of a 28 day cycle both times. Certain as dp worked away and only dtd that day....

ShowOfHands · 23/08/2025 17:54

Shettles has been completely and thoroughly debunked.

In subsequent research it's been shown to make no difference.

Starlight40 · 23/08/2025 18:06

we had 2 boys and I wanted to try for a girl. I used an app to track ovulation for a couple of months and then it told me the days to try for a girl. We conceived the first month of trying.

Starlight40 · 23/08/2025 18:09

Also for our 2nd son I had stomach ache really low down and thought I was ovulating. We had sex that day.

BlooBagoo · 23/08/2025 18:32

DD1 I don’t know as we weren’t tracking. DD2 it was on ovulation day.

YYYDlilah · 23/08/2025 18:34

How do you think?

Spookygoose · 23/08/2025 19:06

My girl was conceived just after ovulation

LaTable · 23/08/2025 19:59

All three of my girls where conceived on ov day. Starting to think I can't grow males 😅

laesosalt · 23/08/2025 20:02

@Starlight40 What app is that? 😊

Willsoo · 23/08/2025 20:18

BlooBagoo · 23/08/2025 18:32

DD1 I don’t know as we weren’t tracking. DD2 it was on ovulation day.

Exactly so just shows it doesn’t work! Makes me feel better than I haven’t timed it well again!!

Yes I feel the same! I had a miscarriage back in January which would be a girl if we go off Shettles. I felt like that happened because I can’t carry girls.

Edited

Yes I’m interested in this too! I didn’t know there was an app to tell you when to conceive for a specific ‘gender’.
