How did you conceive your girl?

I’m currently pregnant with my 3rd boy. Conceived my 1st around ovulation day, and second and third have been conceived a day before ovulation day. We tried to sway the odds with the 3rd as we wanted a daughter so tried to do the ‘Shettles method’ but it’s impossible to know when I’m ovulating as it changes every month. Turns out this pregnancy would be a day before ovulation. I’m beating myself up a bit we didn’t try it better as it’s my last pregnancy. It doesn’t matter now but curious, when did you conceive your girl in your cycle?

we had sex 4 days before ovulation and 24 hours before. And got a girl. No other sex, and I’m 100% sure to the minute when I ovulated because I can feel it. So I will never know if it was girl sperm from 4 days before waiting around that won the race, but does seem to follow the theory

The issue is the difference in sperm speed is really only evident on a population level. There's the "returning soldier"effect where in the year after a war more baby boys are born relative to the number of girls due to more frequent sex so new sperm around the day of ovulation. Pulling numbers off the top of my head it goes from something like 104 boys to 100 girls normally and 120 boys to 100 girls in years after war.

MushroomQueen · 23/08/2025 20:54

I tried to track all 3 of mine. First 2 DS’s I didn’t try and sway either way. My 3rd I had 2 chemical pregnancies (so a +ve test followed by period v soon afterwards). The month after the 2nd I thought my tracking showed I was too late for a girl - but to my surprise when I entered in all my details and positive test the conception was far earlier than I thought and it would be my DD. So I would suggested lots of sex every other day straight after period has stopped. Other than that I think it’s all random

For DS1 we had sex a few days before ovulation and then not again (because DH was away for work), so according to this method he should have been a girl. For DD and DS2 we had sex on ovulation day - one girl, one boy. Therefore I think it's rubbish!

marzipanpan · 23/08/2025 21:09

I remember watching a documentary about fifteen years ago called ‘8 boys and wanting a girl’ or something along those lines. Followed a few different families. There was one mum who had five boys and had followed hardcore swaying methods for the previous two or three pregnancies. They followed Shettles method strictly but also very specific diet, supplements for her and husband, she even did this weird vaginal douching to make ‘conditions more favourable for girl sperm’. Completely bonkers stuff. But yes, she still ended up boys!

TTCJJB · 23/08/2025 21:13

I am currently pregnant with a girl and only had sex once during the cycle 23 conceived which was on the day of ovulation.

comoatoupeira · 23/08/2025 21:13

But a pp shared the science above .. shettles is bollocks. So why still talk about it?

@GirlintheframeMale sperm swim faster but don’t last as long whereas female sperm swim slower but last longer. Whilst you’re correct that the sperm is the deciding factor in the sex, people can try to tip the odds slightly in their favour by tracking ovulation. If you have sex when you ovulate and the egg is already there and waiting then a boy is slightly more likely as the ‘boy’ sperm will get there first. If you have sex a couple of days before ovulation then in theory, more of the boy sperm will have died off before the egg is released, thus increasing the chance of a girl.

Can't be very accurate or women wouldn't have mixed sex twins would they? Or do they ovulate on different days?

I've got no idea when any of mine were conceived.

Justlikethattherearefive · 23/08/2025 21:40

Not sure if there's anything in it. I have a son and daughter and I was tracking LH both times. With DD, we DTD day of peak (so day before ovulation) and also 6, 5 and 3 days before ovulation. With son, can't really remember but several times in the days before ovulation and the day of, which is the only difference between the two. I always read about people trying for a DD having a cut off several days before ovulation but that's obviously not what we did and there's no way of knowing which deed was successful. I think it's luck of the draw.

Nimnuan · 23/08/2025 21:43

Apparently if it takes longer to conceive then you're more likely to have a boy. Not something you've got any influence over unfortunately!

My DD was from a couple of days before ovulation, and my DS the day of ovulation, does follow the theory.

hshshshhdaujhwgwva · 24/08/2025 06:56

I’ve got three boys and currently pregnant with baby 4 (currently unknown but my suspicion is this baby is also a boy).

I used BBT tracking to conceive them all and DTD every day until I had a temp shift.

The months where I didn’t do this and ended up DTD a few days before ovulation (usually because I ovulated later than I expected) I just didn’t conceive that cycle.

I’m not sure if it makes that much difference as I’ve got plenty of friends with both who didn’t do anything special to conceive one of each 🤷‍♀️

Flatandhappy · 24/08/2025 07:05

Interestingly my boys were both conceived when I was trying, tracking ovulation etc. DD was a total surprise 😂 I would genuinely have said it wasn’t possible as I think I was way past my fertile period but obviously not which ties in with the slow swimmers theory.

dogsarethebestalways · 24/08/2025 07:29

I conceived my girls the exact same way I conceived my boys - random chance.

Going by ovulation timing my last girl should have been a boy, she was conceived right on ovulation, so don't get too hung up on that.

PurpleChrayn · 24/08/2025 07:30

Had sex five days before ovulation and had DD.

Had sex one day before ovulation and had DS.

Willsoo · 24/08/2025 09:08

That’s the same with me, when I stopped a few days before ovulation it never seemed to work. But when I dtd a day before ovulation it does and results in boy.

YYYDlilah · 24/08/2025 17:07

A friend had 3 girls and tried to make sure baby no.4 was a boy - followed an eating plan, planned DTD around ovulation etc.
No. 4 was also a girl.

Kels21 · 25/08/2025 07:44

I don’t think anything works, at the end of the day the egg chooses the sperm and it’s which ever one is there ready 😂 you can try sway, I’m having a girl and I dtd at the very start of my fertile window and once the day before ovulation l, completely unplanned, it’s just how it happened, and I did eat a lot of dairy that month and acidic foods. Which is supposed to help create a better environment for girls but I don’t know if that’s actually true 😂 x

Had you also had sex a few days before? Because (assuming shuttles theory is correct) then that gives lots of girl sperm the chance to be right there waiting. So could try that as well as 24 hours before. Or not at all beyond about 2-3 days before ovulation

A few months we tried a few days before like 3-4 days and it didn’t work. I had a miscarriage back in January which was a few days before ovulation- started to think I couldn’t conceive girls. The month that worked we did a day before ovulation, I was started to become impatient as hubby wasn’t always complying with the calendar!!!
