Do you believe that someone you're close to dies when a new baby is born?

My mum is convinced that a new life always brings about the death of a loved one too.
For our last baby and nephew this has been true.
Has anyone else heard this? - Apologies for such a tough topic.

No, I don't believe that.

PurpleTurtleMoose · 11/08/2025 21:55

Short answer, no.

Statistically speaking, the world population is increasing, so it's not a "one in, one out" arrangement.

There's also just no reason why that would be the case

Happyapplesanspears · 11/08/2025 21:55

No

minipie · 11/08/2025 21:55

Nope

Octavia64 · 11/08/2025 21:56

No and I had twins and nobody died for about 15 years after their birth that I was close to.

NeedToKnow101 · 11/08/2025 21:56

No. Sorry to hear that’s happened in your family but it’s not the case generally.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 11/08/2025 21:56

No. Science doesn’t work like that.

FionnulaTheCooler · 11/08/2025 21:56

No it's a coincidence, there is no "revolving door". People are born and die every minute of every day all over the world, no rhyme or reason to it.

Blackcountryexile · 11/08/2025 21:57

I've heard it but I honestly don't believe there is any evidence that it's anything other than superstition.

Notmyreality · 11/08/2025 21:57

No, because that’s stupid.

Glassmatt · 11/08/2025 21:58

No. People die and babies are born. Such is the lifecycle.

WTF987 · 11/08/2025 21:59

I lost 3 grandparents within 18 months of eachother. I had a baby between the second and third deaths. In fact I found out I was pregnant a week before the second death.

But they weren't related. All 3 grandparents were over 90.

CheshireMum1212 · 11/08/2025 22:00

Apparently since 2023 we're now having more deaths than births. Don't even ask my why I googled that a few days ago.

Whether we're having more of one, or the other - as long as they're not equal, your mum's theory still doesn't work.

danglingcarrots · 11/08/2025 22:02

No does your mum not consider all the times babies are born and this doesn’t happen?

If you just look at simple statistics then it is clear it’s mere coincidence. I don’t know why people believe these things.

TheNightingalesStarling · 11/08/2025 22:02

It happened to my mum.
First her father got diagnosed and died of cancer when she was pregnant with my brother.
Then when she was pregnant with me, the sane happened with her MIL.

Its not happened since. Elderly relatives have died, but is been completely unconnected.

Its just a horrible coincidence. Its truly horrible when its you, but its not connected to you.

user593 · 11/08/2025 22:03

It happened with me and my brother and my second DC but not my first. I don’t think I believe it’s a thing but I have family members who do. I do remember being worried that a particular relative might die when I was pregnant with DC1, they didn’t, but they did die when I was pregnant with DC2.

DramaAlpaca · 11/08/2025 22:03

No. When it happens it's just a sad coincidence.

I wonder if she was just making connections with our previous births. O hate these sayings when it starts you overthinking it.

No, it's not one in, one out. Otherwise the global population would not have reached c. 8 billion in the last century or so despite 2 World Wars, Spanish flu and various other disastrous events.

MrsWilbertonsWardrobe · 11/08/2025 22:09

I’m sorry, but do people really believe this? That’s quite extraordinary. Are they allowed unsupervised access to scissors?

Evenstar · 11/08/2025 22:10

It is a coincidence of course but it happened three times out of three to me.

First baby FIL died a month to the day of my son being born and his ashes were interred on the day of the birth. My second baby my stepfather died three weeks before DD was born and the third my aunt died three weeks before the birth.

Another uncle died suddenly the day before my cousin’s youngest son was born and was in the mortuary at the hospital she gave birth at.

I was certainly aware of the saying “A birth and a death” and it was upsetting for me and my cousin.

Echobelly · 11/08/2025 22:11

Nope, never heard of that. No one died around the birth of any of my kids, neices or nephews,

SophiaSW1 · 11/08/2025 22:12

no

Momstermash94 · 11/08/2025 22:18

I found out I was pregnant a few weeks after my dad died, I had tried for a baby for quite a while and was experiencing infertility issues before it happened, but I don't believe its a one in out thing or that he had to die for my DC to be conceived. Although I do find some comfort in believing that my dad helped it happen for me wherever he is now.
